Good point, thank you! So it is likely he would need 12-13 this Basho and 10-11 next, which the way he's wrestling seems like a very possible outcome. PawnSums 59 Posted March 19, 2017 Well, it's the first basho I have actively watched with 4 yokozunae, (and admittedly the first I have actively watched all of whatsoever (yes, since Haru 2009.) ) and it's already interesting!

sekitori 492 Posted March 19, 2017 (edited) 21 hours ago, Fukurou said: None of which explains why they can't have medical personnel near the dohyo for this cultural activity in which participants routinely blow out knees, dislocate joints, become knocked unconscious, suffer facial fractures, and various other injuries. They don't have medical personnel near the dohyo because those who control sumo continue to live in the past. They believe that because they have never been available in the past, there is no reason to have them around now. The fact is that if a rikishi is seriously injured, untrained people who try to give them aid can actually make the injury worse. That would not happen if medically trained individuals were present. I guess they feel that the presence of medical personnel somehow lessens the integrity of an activity where the participants seem to be somewhat superhuman. Because of that reason, they assume that the immediate availability of medical aid is not needed. They couldn't be more wrong. If it makes them feel better, the presence of medical personnel close by should be completely inconspicuous. They can look like the average sumo fan and be called upon only when absolutely necessary. This makes a great deal of sense but because it goes against past tradition, it probably will never be implemented. d_golem 213 Posted March 19, 2017 Kise swatting Shohozan aside as if to say "How dare you whipper-snapper! Don't you know I'm a Yokozuna now, huh?!?", and then he did a Cantona... And btw, who's the boxer doing the commentary on the sideline?

Kise finishing Shohozan like that is the definition of a "bitch slap" ending. And the boxer was Hozumi Hasegawa, who was the concurrent world title holder of three weight classes until his retirement last December.
WAKATAKE 2,671 Posted March 19, 2017 The kotehineri used by Kise today was a career first for the yokozuna, who also becomes the 5th shin-yokozuna in the 15 day basho era (from 1949) to start his yokozuna career at 8-0. The previous four were Tamanoumi, Takanosato, Asahifuji and Hakuho. What puts Kise in a different category than the previous four however is that he is the first Unryu-style yokozuna to accomplish this. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1794786.html

I know they are not always very carfully taken, but Shunba is particularly strange/funny. When he entered he was 167 cm, a year later he was down to 163 cm, then at his highest he was 169, and then back down to 165 cm.

Dwale 419 Posted March 19, 2017 Shohozan had me nervous for a second there, he's been able to get results against bigger guys with the moro-zashi before. Kisenosato kept his cool, though, and at the end swatted him aside like he was nothing. That was cool, but not as cool as Chiyonokuni's "highlight reel" tottari, which was my favorite win of the day. Chiyoshoma in there using his head, woo! This guy has promise, I'm more and more certain of that with every basho. Ikioi put in a good effort, actually he did better than I was expecting. Rough basho for him. Another win for Takayasu's ozeki run. Ura v. Kotoyuki was entertaining. Part of Kotoyuki's problem is that he's so dang hasty. Take it down a notch, guy, you're beating yourself. All in all, a fun day of sumo. Kanpai.
