RabidJohn 1,644 Posted March 29, 2017 I wonder if something sequential has been lost in translation. "...and then compete" would actually make sense.

rhyen 1,801 Posted March 29, 2017 If it is non-surgical, he could be back in time for Natsu Basho. If it requires surgery..., he will probably still be back in time for Natsu Basho. Whether he competes during all 15 days during the basho will be another question.
Kuroyama 715 Posted March 29, 2017 6 hours ago, WAKATAKE said: Many rikishi will compete in the following basho after they get injured. If they don't, then they will lose rank. In Kise's case, he wouldn't lose rank, but a lot of people would be disappointed if they can't see him wrestle. And I'm sure he himself wants to wrestle too. I'm sure he does, and I'm sure he wants to try for that record. But I do hope he takes the long view and doesn't risk permanent injury.
Bumpkin 438 Posted March 29, 2017 Natsu Basho begins on the latest possible date: May 14th. Kisenosato and all others have 7 weeks (49 days) to rest.

WAKATAKE 2,624 Posted March 30, 2017 Takanohana Oyakata, who himself had a comeback yusho like Kisenosato, had this to say: "Though everybody thought it impossible, he brought about a great finish to the basho. I believe that God was watching over Kisenosato's sumo." http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1799737.html

lackmaker 428 Posted March 31, 2017 I thought the basho began on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Is that not always the case?

The rule of thumb I heard years ago was "the Sunday closest to the 10th of the month", or in other words between the 7th and the 13th (= the second Sunday except when it's the 7th). In practice there doesn't seem to be a clear choice between the 7th and the 14th. It probably depends on where the previous and next tournaments fall, possible holidays, and sometimes even completely different external reasons, e.g. I suspect Nagoya 2020 will actually start as early as the 5th, because starting on the 12th would make it run into Tokyo 2020 (scheduled to open on the 24th).

Now imagine the basho run parallel to the olympics and it will be held at the olympic centre, with a full house of international fans each day. Won't happen, but that would be damn cool. Benevolance 2,472 Posted March 31, 2017 I would love to see Ama face off against a boxer. I know there is probably little crossover between the sports, and yes, his harite has been shelved since he made yokozuna, but I've always thought he had the wickedest punch in sumo and he's so damnably fast for a 'heavy weight'. Katooshu 3,088 Posted March 31, 2017 (edited) I've always thought Osu would make a good boxer too. Fast with his hands and on his feet, and very rarely defeated in pure slapfests. I think that's why he's been able to make mincemeat of Yoshikaze... Lightweight Kyokudozan seemed to pack quite a lot of power in his shots, dropping Musashimaru to his knees (29:45 below) and KOing a much bigger rikishi whose name escapes me. Akinomaki 39,581 Posted April 1, 2017 (edited) The talk about Terunofuji's henka will go on for a while, but now into a different direction. The Japanese government wants to have the NSK verify talk about reports of racist jeering and hate speech in the media - "Go back to Mongolia!" and the like. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20170331/sum17033123170003-n1.html And Terunofuji is (jungyo) kyujo now for a reason: the knee got worse on day 12 and was really bad after the day 13 Kakuryu bout, he went to a hospital after day 14 morning keiko. His sumo didn't suddenly deteriorate with the henka, the henka came because he already was in bad shape. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/column/sumo/news/1800105.html Edited April 1, 2017 by Akinomaki
WAKATAKE 2,624 Posted April 1, 2017 Having lived in the Kansai area for six months now, I can tell you that people in Osaka and the surrounding areas people can be considered brash, rude, and very outspoken. Considering there was a henka-esque type result in a match that determined the last Osaka basho, I would not be surprised by that.

In the text of the article the quotes of the jeering were removed as well: after 観客は驚きで一瞬静まり、激しいヤジが飛び交った。 they had: 「モンゴルに帰れ!」「恥を知れ!」。 - also a "Shame on you!" The article next quoted Nishonoseki with "I can understand also the booing." - which implied that he shows understanding for the slur as well. The same "Go back to Mongolia!" was last year towards Hakuho after his henka against Harumafuji to win the Haru basho. He had apologized in tears at the yusho interview. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1623012.html http://www.itmedia.co.jp/business/articles/1703/31/news047.html Edited April 1, 2017 by Akinomaki

Benevolance 2,472 Posted April 1, 2017 With all due respect to Kyokutenho, this most recent finale was still 1000% more entertaining than the Kyokutenho versus Tochiozan playoff in 2012.

Hopefully he is not back to 8-7/MK next tournament. The case continues to be made for rest/surgery/recovery apparently... On a separate note, I'm happy to see Tochiozan nearing a return to the joi. I'm not ready to see him slip down the banzuke into obscurity yet due to age/injury. Some time ago I titled him "the best of the rest" after the Y/O.
