MumboJumbo 37 Posted January 18, 2017 Ichinojo has the record that he should have for the low rank that he is at. Good to see that he's healthier and fighting harder than last basho.
Rocks 1,810 Posted January 18, 2017 (edited) Great win by Hokutofuji. Chiyotairyu threw everything except the kitchen sink at him. Edited January 18, 2017 by Rocks
Rocks 1,810 Posted January 18, 2017 Come on Okinoumi. Even with 1 leg you should beat Kotoyuki.

He was staring MK straight in the face. If he had took a chance and lost to Giku it would have been a disaster.

He should have made that decision sooner; 5-5 is bad for a yokozuna but would have looked better and at least *even*. 5-6 is a disaster.

WAKATAKE 2,759 Posted January 18, 2017 I've been finding that the since last year the yusho races have stayed very interesting. Kise had that "yoyuu" type face when facing Endo, I think he was thinking he wasn't going to lose to him, but he was playing a pretty dangerous game there. Morty 1,518 Posted January 18, 2017 3 hours ago, Rocks said: Great win by Hokutofuji. Chiyotairyu threw everything except the kitchen sink at him. That was super frustrating to watch. Chiyotairyu has the talent to be a Joi mainstay and he insists on trying to win every bout the same way, by the pull down. Every one of those powerful shoves he gave Hokotofuji was just there to set up the pull down and Hokotofuji knew it, which is why he was able to maintain his balance and win. Chiyotairyu has so much power - if he would just follow a shove with another shove then another he would win a lot more. Instead he is just a one trick pony always looking for a pull down. Aaaarghh! So frustrating, he could do so much better!
Morty 1,518 Posted January 18, 2017 The "changing of the guard" also seems to have some previous Joi regulars in decline as well - both Tochiozan and Myogiryu look shadows of their former selves and both were talked about as possible Ozekis once.

Again, exactly what I thought watching the matches today. When I started watching, they were the names brought up as the clear ozeki candidates. Doesn't always work that way. YoungSumo 93 Posted January 18, 2017 Hokutofuji - Ichinojou will be a really interesting bout tomorrow. Kisenosato - Ikioi is also interesting, Ikioi could prove difficult here.
WAKATAKE 2,759 Posted January 18, 2017 And we definitely couldn't ask for a better basho musubino ichiban than the two nemeses.
Jakusotsu 6,383 Posted January 18, 2017 (edited) Quite hilarious to watch that Takekaze tried an ipponzeoi again today against Mitakeumi. http://youtu.be/x6Ns0625ysg?t=9m36s Edited January 18, 2017 by Jakusotsu Link added
Jyuunomori 238 Posted January 18, 2017 I need to get this off my chest. It will seem completely random but I have paid attention to his downfall and my heart bleeds looking at his record. How can someone who went 10-5 to be M2w. Then go into such a massive decline that it doesn't even seem real. When this rikihi first got a 2-13 Makekoshi and 4-11 Makekoshi I thought that he would bounce back because he clearly was better than that. Oh how has Sadanofuji fallen. I was certain he would make it to become Komusubi or Sekiwake in 2015 because of the improvement he showed back in 2014. But what the hell happened to him? He is dropping and dropping and will be Sandame soon. :( His record makes me freaking cringe everytime I look at it.

Dwale 419 Posted January 18, 2017 Oh, man, what a tense basho this is. Favorite win of the day was Gagamaru. It's moments like that I cheer for. My favorite match of the day was Mitakeumi v. Takekaze.

I think Hak will lose again and I don't expect Goeido to go very hard against Kise since he has his KK. I think Kise beats Ikioi easily along with whoever else they use to fill in. Probably Takekaze.
