Ok, that's 6 kinboshi now, making this basho #1-kinboshi-giveaway this decade. And there is still a chance to match Nagoya basho 2003 with 7 kinboshi.

I can't believe Kisenosato lost to Kotoshogiku. I can't believe a lot of things i've seen today or during this basho. Let's see what surprises wait for us tomorrow.

Haven't watched today's bouts yet and we're only 9 days in but really, has anyone remember a basho like this lately on top of the head? It's like anybody can lose to anyone at any given bout. Maybe everybody's feeling that it's time the top guys are finally there for the taking. Even a newcomer like me who started following sumo just under 2 years ago can feel the rumblings of change has finally arrived.

WTF is going on?

I thought that some of the past bashos last year were absolutely crazy, but what the hell is this? I think Kakuryuu is better go Kyujo whilst he still can, and Hakuho should get thinking about it before more misfortune befalls him.

What is next? Hakuho and Kisenosato fall off from the race and we will see triple playoff between Hokutofuji, Takanoiwa and Ichinojo.

Kotoyuuki's win today ended a 16 bout losing streak by Sadogatake sekitori.

Oh, so Hakuhou is not getting an easy zensho this time? The likes of which he can get anytime he pleases? Oh, I get it-he lost on purpose (twice..) because he was ordered by the racist, evil Kyokai to let Kisenosato get his yusho. Wow. He was supposed to come storming in, no? At this point I'd be happy just to see him get another yusho. Zensho days are over. He is looking shaky- has been for a while.

This is directed at Daishomaru: Was it really necessary to do a half-henka against Osu? All you have to do is avoid his kachiage and you will win. It is obvious that he is injured, again, so you don't have to do anything special to win....

I realize you are probably being a bit sarcastic but their is no such thing as an easy zensho. Every zensho has a bit of luck in it. You are not going to dominate all 15 days.

What a complete straw man. Nobody said Hakuho can zensho anytime he pleases. Some of us just happened to disagree with your declaration that he would never zensho EVER AGAIN, that's all.

Ok, that was nuts. Great day of sumo excepting the part where I was screaming, "What the **** are you doing?" at Kisenosato. 

Enjoyed Kaisei v. Chiyoshoma a lot, had a "Shadow of the Colossus" thing goin'.

Kotoyuki: Congratulations, you managed to get off a henka against the one person in makuuchi whose turn radius is even worse than yours. I think maybe Kotoyuki needs to start barking again. (I didn't realize Gagamaru's knee was troubling him. Hope he's not making it worse by fighting through it. T.T )

Takakeisho v. Chiyoootori was another entertaining match.

Ichinojo's been wrestling a little harder than usual past couple of days. Maybe something lit a fire under his butt? Whatever the case, I hope it's something he can sustain. 

Ishiura getting another win. Well, what can I say? I like have a fast little fellow to cheer, and it makes a nice contrast to all the power sumo. Not gonna be in makuuchi long if he can't figure a way to win, though.

Hokutofuji having a great tournament, looks poised for double-digit finish. 

Mitakeumi! Yeah, Tamawashi's not a pushover, but Mitakeumi is really hot right now. Go, go, go!

Terunofuji reeeeeaaally needed that win... ^.^;

Hakuho succumbs to another rush. He was repositioning so quickly that Takayasu had to sprint to keep up with him! But he did, and racked up a win for his efforts. Good job.

Going into day 9 it was really just a race between Kise and Hakuho but after they both lost today who knows what's going to happen. Lots of outstanding performances today.

To clarify this, there were six kinboshi in 2003 Nagoya - the famous Kyokushuzan-Asashoryu hansoku doesn't count as a kinboshi.

The last time there were seven kinboshi in a basho was 1998 Kyushu.

I thought the OBC might get a mention when Kise lost to the Geek - that much was predictable! Nah, it's just the gurner starting to choke as usual, but it's still his yusho if he really wants it, thanks to Takayasu's nodowa (that was the point Hak lost balance, I think).

More lovely agile moves from Chiyoshoma, and is Arawashi going to pull a KK after all?

I think we'll be mentioning Hokutofuji along with Shodai and Mitakeumi before long. It's not dissimilar to watching his boss back when I first saw sumo in the mid-eighties.

Just watches Day 9. Thank you Kintamayama! Can't believe Kisenosato. Everybody and their brother is beating Giku with a throw and he gets into a pushing battle with him.  Oh well, a 14-1 Yusho is as good as a Zensho.

Kise's not really a fan of throws though is he? He likes to beat everyone straight up, no nonsense, forward moving. He let Giku do his kind of sumo, and paid for it.
