He would be a natural successor to the kabu, although Shōhōzan's case tells us not to assume so much even about veteran sekitori.

He stopped fighting after a few seconds and favored his right shoulder in obvious pain. I seem to remember Tomozuna kabu being available already ... or he may be ready to compete tomorrow, what do I know. I was thinking exactly the same when watching his bout. Doesn't look like his leg injury is going to get significantly better, and he looked far too defensive / scared from the charge today, ending in further pain. I couldn't tell if it was thrusts to his face or shoulder that was hurting but I'm sure we will know this time tomorrow. Ishiura's the one I'm most worried about, I feel like he's still got a lot more to give in the dohyo but having to climb back up the ranks/ cope with a complex internal injury may discourage him. Seiyashi 4,109 Posted July 10, 2022 I wouldn't be too worried about Terunofuji - yet. It's not the first basho for which he's had a relatively cold start, and he was fighting back well against Abi until a sharp dodge coupled with a kotenage allowed Abi to seal the deal. He's looked worse in his losses to e.g. Daieishō or Tamawashi, both of which have just absolutely smoked him from the start of the bout. No real exciting sumo today, but interesting efforts in Terutsuyoshi - Chiyoshōma, and an excellent tactical debut by Ōshōma, who was absolutely determined not to let Hokuseihō play to his usual game. Still took ages to actually win the bout.
since_94 650 Posted July 10, 2022 IMO we saw 2 botched calls in makuuchi day 1: Kotoeko benefited from the first when torinaoshi was awarded against Chiyotairyu. Second benefited Mitakeumi through the absence of a torinaoshi call against Takanosho
Katooshu 3,485 Posted July 10, 2022 (edited) Excuse the sloppy screen snip, but Takanosho's heel looks out well before Mita touched down - there was a mark in the sand too. Edited July 10, 2022 by Katooshu

There was no doubt that Tobizaru's hand swiped Okinoumi's fallen sagari which was on the dohyo. Whether or not his fingertips actually came into contact with the surface of the ring, I suspect not. A monoii review may have been warranted, but the shinpan judges seemed confident Tobizaru only brushed the sagari. I can live with that decision.
Amamaniac 2,092 Posted July 10, 2022 For fans of ex-Ozeki Asanoyama, his return to action starts tomorrow (day 2). His bout is scheduled down in the Sandanme Division. Ranked Sd22w, he will face Sd22e Goshimaru, who joined sumo in November 2015 and has languished down in Sandanme. Should be an easy win for Asanoyama. Bakayokozuna 52 Posted July 10, 2022 Already multiple upsets in day 1... are we heading to another weird basho ? Rly bad start for Wakatakakage, this ozeki run was already a hard one, another slow start would kill it even with one of his stong finishes. Mandatory win today vs Tamawashi.I hope he gets it. One loss for terunofuji! An accident more than anything if you ask me but we will see. Day 2 starting soon !

Just to put things into context, there is a picture of Asashōryū looking a bit discomfited in a zabuton storm when he was in one of the masuseki during a basho. Asashōryū is scared of flying zabuton - let that sink in. Aye! Saw a few zabuton flying after that Abi win! Didn’t look like twofers though.

Jakusotsu 6,392 Posted July 11, 2022 Is it standard procedure that Yutakayama gets his water from Tsurugisho instead of Hidenoumi, because technically Daiamami "lost" the previous bout? First time I noticed this...
Adz_517 21 Posted July 11, 2022 (edited) I’ve decided to come out of lurking for years to enjoy this basho with you all. Team Ozeki is once again floundering. Takakeisho was lucky Horshoryu slipped as he was caught and heading out. Shodai doesn’t seem to have a clue how to sumo any more and Mitakeiumi seems to throw in the towel way before he needs too. Even prospective ozeki are suffering- Wakatakakage just bounced off Tamawashi’s chest in a hapless fashion and Daieishos slow start robs him of any chance of promotion this time. Oh and I really hated that Takarafuji/ Ichiyamamoto match. It seems very unjust one wrestler can win a bout by spending the entire thing running away, showing no aggression. Hankegami 598 Posted July 11, 2022 (edited) A-nd Day 2 is over! My impressions for the joy (the ones I could watch today): Ichinojo totally on fire. He ran over poor Daieisho and there are no signs he's going to stop. Tomorrow Hoshoryu vs. Ichinojo (6-4). The Nephew usually has the upper hand, but THIS Ichinojo could beg to differ. The Sekiwake are definitively the new Ozeki, in the sense they are giving the same Goeido impression. Daieisho was probably just unlucky against a roaring Ichinojo, but Wakatakakage was unwatchable. I had the impression he is suffering from all the pressure and hype, causing him to make foolish errors. Tomorrow Wakamotoharu vs. Daieisho (no precedents) and Wakatakakage vs. Ura (2-0-1). Once again, a match where Wakatakakage enters as the favorite, but Ura is... Ura (see today vs. Abi). Wakatakakage should better Wake-takakage up, or else. Speaking of the Ozeki, it's not that bad. Takakeisho mauled poor Hoshoryu much as expected and keeps the dreams of his supporters for a grand basho alive. Mitakeumi did better than prevented - remember his bad shoulder -, and for a second I thought he could push Kotonowaka out. No cigar, but I'm still confident he will get his KK somehow. And these are the Ozeki. Sandanme 101 Shodai, hilariously passed off as an Ozeki probably for some obscure PR strategy, keeps being pushed around the dohyo. Jokes aside, Shodai makes today's Wakatakakage watchable. I know he can STILL show up suddenly on day 8 and pull an 8-7 out of the blue, but there should be limits for creepy shows. The main point is that THIS Shodai is not even good for sekitori level. Were I in his shoes, I would call it a day and retire. And last, the Yokozuna. Terunofuji reassured his fans and won a lengthy match against an unyielding KIribayama. Both gave me a good impression. Being still Day 2, Terunofuji appears very capable to make a replica of Natsu basho. He has contenders, of course. Ichinojo could be interested to win a yusho for a change, and deny his friend his usual freebie for once. Kotonowaka has a lot of fans and everyone is yelling how good he is at having won against two Ozeki (Sd101 Shodai and injured Mitakeumi). Tomorrow Takakeisho vs. Kotonowaka (2-1). We will see how good he is. Other names popping up are of couse Kiribayama and Abi. We will see in due course. Edited July 11, 2022 by Hankegami
Akinomaki 41,815 Posted July 11, 2022 No y/o/s/k in the lead already on day 2 again. I had hoped Sanspo would resume to publish spectator numbers now that there is no limit anymore, but they mentioned the day 1 number only in the news about that, 6331, like other sources - other days will likely get no reports. The capacity is given as 7448, with 6331 (85%) they could have shown the man-in onrei banners, 80% full usually is enough for that. https://www.sanspo.com/article/20220711-4NOK27EMCBNNVC7Z7WPFX6CKAI/ https://www.jiji.com/jc/article?k=2022071000390&g=spo https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202207090001169.html
Leo C 52 Posted July 11, 2022 I always enjoy it when Teru faces Kiribayama or Hoshoryu. Like, even though there's no beating Teru on the belt because of how big and how good he is, that's their thing too so they go for it every time and it always makes for an exciting match, especially considering they're both up and comers as well. Today was another example. When one of those two beats Terunofuji in a belt battle some day it'll be great.

Bakayokozuna 52 Posted July 11, 2022 Crazy leaderboard already ! the guys at m1,m2,m3 are looking very good while sanyaku, or some of them, are not doing great. Both Sekiwake pretty much killed their small chances to get promoted right away and it took only two days. At least Daieisho can still put himself in good position to fight for promotion in september but Wakatakakage will have to grind again I agree with hankegami, i think Waka has issues with the expectations that came with his yusho back in march. Well the expectations and hype are about to cool down for a while i guess, maybe good news for him Looks like Shodai will need another crazy and unexpected week 2 like we saw in haru basho. More and more likely demotion time coming
