Kurowashi 40 Posted July 13, 2022 I hope Ichinojo is on fire and we‘ll get a exciting oldschool bout between him and Terunofuji, with a mizu iri :)

Eikokurai 3,419 Posted July 13, 2022 Kintamayama said the shimpan ruled that the hairpull didn’t affect the result, but that runs contrary to everything we’ve ever seen before. Hansoku are supposed to be called whatever the result. That’s usually what happens. If you pull someone’s hair, you’re disqualified for the act alone.

Is the difference where you grab on the arm? I think the difference is he didn´t throw him, but used the arm bar to force him down/out.

Can anyone verify how many mizuiri have been called between these two Mongolian Goliaths? But I totally agree that seeing one in the final bout of the day would be awesome! The folks at NHK news might not be thrilled. Edited July 13, 2022 by Amamaniac

It's hard to guess what the shimpan are thinking in the heat of the moment. The November 2021 day 8 bout between them ended with a hairpull discussion as well. Quite confusing. I believe the last one to take place in the musubi-no-ichiban was in 1980 Hatsu, between Kitanoumi and Wakanohana II. 3

Gurowake 3,727 Posted July 13, 2022 I remember making a comment after those two mizu-iri that I hoped their next meeting would end up with a draw, which hasn't been seen for 50 years but presumably will still get called if they spend enough time unable to complete the match. The only question is how much time would be "enough".

At the very least it'll be unprecedented, which always means fun while people try and figure out what to do.

The one good thing with it being the musubi-no-ichiban is that they know exactly how much time the matches after them will take. 7 years ago there would always be at least a few more to go. Benevolance 2,372 Posted July 13, 2022 Rather than watching Teru & Ichi stand unmoving at the center of the dohyo for 8 minutes, maybe they could set up, like, a 4 minute tea ceremony and then they settle the match with some jan-ken-pon.

I must admit to growing sympathy with that view. Getting out of kadoban is one thing, but if he's just going to wind back up there 1 basho later there's not much of a point in the whole charade, is there? I still hold out hope that he can turn it around. The talent is certainly there. Anyway, "the ball don't lie"—if he fights well enough to pick up 8+ wins (or 10+ in September), he stays Ozeki; if he doesn't, he doesn't. But I'll certainly continue rooting for "good Shodai" to show up each day.
Amamaniac 2,014 Posted July 13, 2022 At 4-0, I'd say Ryuden is well on his way to returning to the Top Division in September. The bigger question is: what is he going to do once he gets there? He reached Komusubi in one tournament (Nagoya 2019). Will he make it back and beyond? He seems to be a rank-and-file staple, and he's not getting any younger. Benevolance 2,372 Posted July 13, 2022 At a quick glance, Shodai's head to head against the sanyaku is about even for wins/losses. His sumo is lackluster, but he could be a lot worse. When Goeidou was doing kadoban whack-a-mole, he was doing it in a top division saturated with talent and his frequent flirtation with demotion was a side note. Shodai has the misfortune of performing sumo with relatively similar results whilst standing on a very empty stage. For myself, after a decade of watching some very dominant sumo, it's a bit hard to get used to watching ordinary results.

Yubinhaad 11,025 Posted July 13, 2022 If you like seeing Satonofuji in action you might not want a draw - the yumitori-shiki won't take place if the final bout is drawn.
Amamaniac 2,014 Posted July 13, 2022 Sorry, but I'm playing catch up today. The bout between Yutakayama and Tsurugisho was ruled a uwatedashinage (overhand pulling throw) win for the former. I've watched the replay numerous times (albeit Abema's single angle view), and I fail to see Yutakayama's hand getting any kind of grip on Tsurugisho's mawashi... Anyone care to defend the kimarite ruling? Please explain.
