Nagoya Yusho Predictions?

Recommended Posts

I really like to get you experts down in writing before the drums and hyoshigi start. Pick a jun-yusho, as well for maximum prognostication points.

I'll go first. I'm picking Wakatakakage. Hey, if Tokushoryu can do it from M-17, well, anything can clearly happen. The long shots obviously benefit from not being in the joi-jin but I still like the kid's sumo.

Jun-yusho - Takakeisho

Gambatte kudasai.

Yusho - Terunofuji

Jun-yusho - Takakeisho

Bonus predictions: Takayasu does well until day 11, Hakuho does well enough not to be forced to retire, Enho makekoshi in a big way, Ikioi retires

Yusho - Ichinojo

Jun-Yusho - Terunofuji

Just because I think the most frustrating person to break up Terunofuji's yusho run for him is Ichinojo, and the universe is a jester.

Yusho - Takakeisho

JY - Terunofuji

Because I'm a sucker for the harmony of a dual-promotion event.

Looks like another Terunofuji one... but he can't get away with 12-3 forever

Jun-yusho Takakeisho & some random Maegashira a la Kotoeko or Tsurugisho

Yusho: Hakuho just to suck all the lifeforce of everyone expecting a smooth transition to the next generation.
Jun yusho: Shodai and Terunofuji with 11 wins each. Total collapse of Takakeisho, another disappointing basho from Takayashu.

Yusho Takayasu

Jun-Yusho- Mitakeumi

I would LOVE this.

However: Yusho - Hakuho, Jun - Terunofuji. How boring of me.

Kotoeko on the yusho race on his likely joi debut? He'd sweep up all 3 prizes.

I didn't exactly swing for the fences or think outside the box. But...it is what it is this time.

The winner of the yusho will be a Mongolian, Japanese, Brazillian, Bulgarian, or Georgian man between the ages of 20 and 37.

Mitakeumi Yusho, Terunofuji JY; Hakuho wins 7 and goes kyujo, ruins Terunofuji tsuna discussion with his retirement discussion.

The rest?  What am I, clairvoyant?

I predict Hakuho will start off with a bang, winning each of his bouts, but will go kyujo at some point due to a flare-up of his knee coupled with other undetermined physical problems.  He will not get to fight Terunofuji or Takakeisho which will be a letdown.  I think Terunofuji will win the Yusho because he has developed incredible mental toughness due to the tremendous struggles he's been through.  He will only go kyujo if his knees collapse.  Otherwise, he will keep going and will not give in to the pain.  He will keep winning, but it will not be a zensho yusho, maybe 12-3 or even 13-2.  He will be our next Yokozuna and will be promoted after the Nagoya basho.  (Hopefully, 12-3 will be enough).  Takakeisho only seems to do well when he is injury-free or has minor injuries.  I don't think he is good at working through pain.  This makes it hard for me to predict how he will do.  However, since he's on a tsuna run, I hate to count him out.  I predict he will suffer some sort of minor injury, will keep going, but will falter partly due to his lack of improving his ability to grab his opponent's mawashi.  He can't get by on thrusts alone but his arms are so short that it's hard to have a viable Plan B.  His opponents will smarten up, quickly move laterally and go for his mawashi before his mighty thrusts can succeed.  Ultimately, Takakeisho will disappoint, ending with a 10-5, thus dashing his tsuna run for the time being.  But he will heal, train smarter and try again.  Takayasu looked amazing during the Natsu basho, much better than I expected.  Again he will do well but will lose a few bouts to lower-ranked rikishi and will not win the Yusho or Jun-Yusho.  Mitakeumi will be Mitakeumi.  Enough said.  Like Kaminariyuki, I am very impressed with Wakatakakage and he is my surprise  pick for Jun-Yusho.  He's a dark horse, but he's very quick, technically skilled, inventive and makes some of the old guard look pretty slowed down.  And he's improving, too!!  Okay, Terunofuji wins the Yusho, becomes our next Yokozuna and Wakatakakage is Jun-Yusho.

Yusho - Terunofuji

Jun-yusho - Hakuho

For a perfect changing of the guard.

Takaysu to fall short of ozeki repromotion.

Shodai to make-koshi
