What's with the extra shove that Hakuho gives Takekaze after he has obviously won today? Seemed a bit un-gentlemanly to me, almost like he was telling him to get back to his side of the Dohyo.

Maybe Hak feels he needs another censure from the Kyokai to light a fire under him and get him back to his winning ways...

I don't know why he does it, but he does, quite often. It's unbecoming of a yokozuna and the thing I probably least like about him.

I view it as the equivalent of a pat on the butt seen in other sports with a respectful meaning of "Well Done!".

Ostensibly it's to remind everybody that he's the still the Yokozuna but, like Terunofuji, it's more to remind himself lately. If Hakuho had fought that match that way against most of the sanyaku he'd of been toast.

Anyone else see that bloody nose Ikioi got from Kakuryu's head? It was pretty bad. I wonder if he broke his nose?

He does that alot. Has even been officially warned for it a couple of times too. Not a nice character-trait

The rank and file making up the bottom end of the joi are collectively 1-14 to date.  Lots of competition among the sanyaku and above!

I was predicting Harumafuji to be the first retiree among the current yokozuna, and he is not doing so well.

Is Terunofuji for real?  First time he has been 3-0 since July.  Bandages on his knees are notably absent.

Giku making a strong showing but has tough competition to get his 10 wins.

Some very exciting matches in day 3! Ikioi gave a spirited battle against Kakuryu. Takekaze looked like he nearly was going to pull off an upset over Hakuho.  Kise didn't look at his best, but got the job done. Takayashu vs Kotoshogiku was a highlight match for me. It looked like giku had him, but Takayashu looked very impressive, could he be entering his prime? Difficult defeat for giku, going to 3-0 would have been huge towards getting his 10 wins.

Terunofuji looked very formidable, no signs of injury slowing him down. Off to a good start to getting his 8.

Shodai and Mitakeumi continue to impress as well!

Harumafuji looked emotional after his loss. To those regular sumo fans (new fan here :)), are his injuries hampering him or does his overall form appear to be declining? Hoping he can rebound, though a well earned gold star for Sokokurai

Kotoshogiku  still is one legged and was not enough for a strong Takayasu.

He is definitely in decline. The wear and tear on his body from a long career  are really starting to limit his performance. Those huge supports he wears around each elbow are a clear indicator he is hampered there and he has perennial ankle injuries as well. At his peak he was the match of anyone so it is kind of sad to watch him coming to the end.

New to Sumo.  I was at day 11 in September 2016 and became a Sumo fan and also a Goeido fan as he went 15-0.  Since then following him is turning into a rollercoaster I thought he was unlucky on day 2 and out wrestled day 3.  Is there any information on whether he is still struggling from ankle injury which forced him out of last tournament?

Welcome - I'm also in WA (Perth). Basically, following Goeido is a rollercoaster - he is extremely talented but inconsistent. He does often carry injuries, but he is also one of the guys who let nerves get to them on occasion. But likely the ankle is still causing him issues here as well. They always underplay injuries and fight through them stoically. Half of the Rikishi will be wrestling this basho with an injury that is worse than would put you out of most sports

Does Ura confuse the announcers? It seems the one before him in the dohyo-iri was called with 2 heya, or was it a jump in the stream? NHK confusing Ishiura for Ura is not astonishing (I checked, it was "Yorikirimashita, Ura no kachi"), but the hall announcing gyoji?

Edit: he put Daishomaru into Ura's Kise-beya and immediately added Oitekaze-beya

Not even a tori-naoshi for the Dai-Yokozuna? Wow...

Replay looks that - at best - Ikioi's hand touched the sand at the same time as Hakuho's calf touched the sand/tawara.

I thought this could even be a sashi-chigae.

Ikioi's was decicive in his agression and only put his hand down after Hakuho's both legs had already been raised from the dohyo thanks to his pushing momentum. Hakuho was a dead body there and that is why Ikioi won. Shinitai victory.

Takayasu out of all people is the next Ozeki. Not Shodai, not Mitakeumi. He has looked really good lately.

Kotoshougiku shows fire and manhandles Kakuryuu, who has not looked good despite winning. He is not ready to call it quits yet. 2 out of 4 Yokozunae down. He might pull out the 10 wins.

Kisenosato is the only Yokozuna who looks like a Yokozuna this basho. 4-0 and is going for concecutive Yusho to shut up the skeptics about his promotion to Yokozuna.

will Harumafuji withdraw with his eye injury?

I hope he hasn't re-fractured the orbit of his eye. It looked pretty painful.

Wow, I have never seen Hak pushed back like that. He had nothing to stop Ikioi there. He has lost his power (well some of it, Ikioi is a big, strong guy)

Down in Sandanme, does anyone know what happened with Sd70w Kotoseigo? He lost his day 4 match vs Ryutsukasa, then withdrew as of day 5. Knee?

Big fan of Ikioi, and hate to disagree with Kintamayama, but at the very least this should have been a do over or a win for Hak. I was stunned when it wasn't an instant monoli. Yes, Ikioi was the aggressor but Hak's feet were still within the ring and Hak's ankle was touching the bale when Ikioi touched down.

They called "Dead body" - Hak was completely in the air in an unrecoverable position before Ikioi touched any body part down. I'm not so sure Hak didn't touch down first anyway.
