Goeido to Retire

Recommended Posts

I hope Goeido can secure a kabu and stay in sumo. I am glad that he has decided to retire as an Ozeki. He wasn't one of my favorites but I never wished any misfortune on him. He was a good Ozeki and used the current rules to his advantage. All Ozekis do the same thing for as long as they can. Happy retirement Goeido! Hopefully you will have a long career as an oyakata.

I always liked his movements. He looked cool. It's a shame his bouts ended by disappointment so often.

Another yotsu rikishi gone, it feels like only the oshi rikishi remain...

I have to share this entiment. Aki basho 2016 was the first event I watched fully, because after couple days I got hooked to see if this guy can really win them all... And have been hooked ever since. All the success to Goeido in his future plans. (Bow...)

I'm really gutted because we are booked for Osaka in March and Goeido is a hero to my young son. The first basho he watched was when Goeido Zensho'd.

It used to be that ozeki demotions were relatively rare, now it is quite rare for those ozeki who failed to make Yokozuna to end their careers as ozeki.  Technically Goeido has ended his career as ozeki, the last ones prior to him were Kaio, Tochiazuma and Musoyama - and further back would be Hokutenyu, Asashio and Wakashimazu.

The struggle for kabu is obviously an issue, Kirishima was the first one to really continue after demotion (in fairly recent time) because of that.

Swami

Granted, for some kabu might be an issue but other still continue as maegashira even if they have a kabu secured, whether for love of sumo or just to extend their earnings for a bit more. If I remember the kabu thread correctly, Kotoshogiku has had a kabu for a while yet he's still soldiering on. Wonder if Goeido's decision will make him think as well...

Watching the Osaka basho won't be quite the same without his raucous hometown support.

The news report translated by Kaninoyama says, "Intai will be formally determined once procedures, such as Toshiyori Eligibility, have been completed. " Maybe they are trying to find a kabu for him. He has not previously been reported as  owning a  kabu. But yes, as an ex-ozeki he can be Goeido Oyakata for three years.

A quick look at the kabu situation in Dewanoumi-ichimon leads to my personal assumption that he will serve as Goeido oyakata for a short while until two shares will become available in May 2021 (Dekiyama and Matsuchiyama). My bet is on Dekiyama, due to the historical connection between Dewanoumi-beya and Sakaigawa-beya.

He could buy Yamashina from the previous owner (retired ex-Onishiki), but that would mean trouble for his stablemate ex-Sadanofuji, who is currently using the kabu on loan. And making one of the loaners quit for the benefit of Goeido starting a loan himself simply appears odd to me.

I hope he can find a kabu in the 3-year period offered by the kyokai. He has been a very decent ozeki, and his zensho was an unexpected surprise

The bout I will remember from him is the okuritsuriotoshi loss he had to then-Ama. A must-see for all sumo fans that were not around in 2007 :

The newcomers might also enjoy this masterpiece from @Randomitsuki

There's been a lot of surprise yusho winners lately, but where does Goeido's win rank on the surprise zensho list? I certainly wasn't expecting it, but glad he snuck in the one.

Every zensho not by Hakuho is a surprise.

Hakuho was kyujo that tournament so not much of a surprise he didn’t win it. :)

Great thanks to Nantonoyama for these two wonderful clips. The first makes me recall just how much I miss Ama. (Yes, yes, and Hamarufuji too). Watching Ama climb first to ozeki, which I doubted he'd ever be able to do, then to yokozuna. (Which I almost didn't want him to do, because I was worried they'd force him to retire too early. Well, they did - but not for the reason I feared.)

And then that crazy laugh and those wonderful captions by Randomitsuki, making merry with Goeido's highly improbable zensho yusho (coming after two years as ozeki with just one prior double digit wins and four MKs). I'd rate Goeido's zensho yusho the third most unpredictable yusho I've seen in 15 years, following only Tokushoryu's and Kyokutenho's. It's super how Rando pokes fun at Goeido, SumoTalk, and sumo in general.

I really liked him when he was up and coming. I fear he put on too much weight over the years. Enjoy elderhood Goeido

The first time I saw Sumo was Day 12 September 2016 when I took a group of students as a part of a school trip from Australia.  The whole group became Goeido fans and I have been a massive fan of his ever since.  I also started me on my way to being a Sumo tragic.

Please excuse my ignorance but how does it work now? I am unsure when people talk of him buying or borrowing a Kabu???

Sad to see Goeido retire but doing so now shows me that he waned to leave on his own terms. Maybe he realised that his injuries over the years were going to place his long-term health at potential risk, maybe he feel out of love with the sport. Either way, reaching Ozeki is a huge achievement in and of itself, as is a zensho yusho, so he can be extremely proud of those achievements and be held in high esteem for them.

I am glad to hear that he has found a place in the sport outside of the dohyo, especially as so many rikishi struggle with post-retirement life.

I imagine for some of them it is that they just can't stand the thought of doing something else, and maybe fear of becoming an Oyakata and having to make that transition. Most of the ones that keep going have been doing it for 20 years by the time they drop from the Ozeki ranks - it must be hard to consider a sudden change to something else. Their identity is tied up in being a rikishi, and then they have to change that to being an oyakata, something entirely different. It never surprises me when they soldier on to the bitter end.

Absolutely. Rikishi won’t be much different to the rest of us. Change is hard, frightening even. I’m sure most of us on this forum have struggled to make a change at some point in our lives. I know I have. I worked 11 years in my last company, of which the last three were spent dragging my feet over looking for something else because that company was basically all I knew. Going from being a rikishi to anything else must be quite an adjustment. Even staying in sumo as an Oyakata will be a big transition as the job is so different.

It's official, and Goeido is now Takekuma-oyakata.

Wow, that comes as a surprise.

And once more, this name crosses ichimon lines (permanently?). From Isegahama over Tokitsukaze to Dewanoumi within 7 years ... nice.

Additionally, a permanent move would mean Dewanoumi are able to strengthen their political status by one more constant vote.
