dada78641 884 Posted January 18, 2018 I'm really sorry for Kisenosato. I've always liked his sumo, but he's just been devastated since his poorly treated injury. As I recall someone put his win rate from that moment on at around 50%, but it's probably even lower now. It just seems so wrong that this great rikishi's career looks like it's heading full speed towards an early and unceremonious exit. 5
Katooshu 3,483 Posted January 18, 2018 Tochinoshin can do very well with Hak, Harumafuji, and Kotoshogiku either not competing or significantly faded. Those are three guys he was pretty much locked into lossess against over the last few years.
jalil_the_swan 25 Posted January 18, 2018 With Harumafuji out for good, Hakuho kyujo and Kise not up to scratch, the ball is in Kakuryu's court. If he fails now, he better retire.

If he fights all 15 bouts and wins, say, 12, he'll be golden.
Morty 1,518 Posted January 18, 2018 I was really looking forward to seeing Tochinoshin vs. Hak and hoping the former would finally beat the latter based on current form... And my money is on Mitakaeumi for the yusho rather than Kak. This is the one where he goes to the next level.

I think he may have gotten a little gyoji gift yesterday against Takayasu, but it was hard to see for sure.

Dwale 419 Posted January 18, 2018 Props to Tochinoshin and Goeido for an excellent match. Great to see him doing so well. I'm very pleased with Mitakeumi as well.
Yatagarasu 352 Posted January 18, 2018 Goeido v Tochinoshin - WOW! So nice to see Tochinoshin healing well. Yoshikaze threw Kisenosato around like a rag doll; Kisenosato seems over the injury but just hasn't got his strength back. Mitakeumi was a joy to watch once again, making ever steady moves upwards. Takayasu is looking pretty solid too. I think we're getting a taste of what the post-Hakuho era will look like in the future. I know it's an early call, but my money is on Ishiura going back to juryo. Poor Aminishiki. Hope it's nothing serious. I have to say, the sportsmanship all round was pretty classy today in particular - there was more than one bout where rikishi either helped opponents back onto the dohyo or tried to stop them falling off.
YoungSumo 93 Posted January 18, 2018 If he goes on like this Tochinoshin is my pick to win the Yusho. He looks unstoppable and has already beaten Goeido and Takayasu.

Tochinoshin vs Mitakeumi vs Kakuryu.... I'm also hoping that Aminishiki's injury isn't going to make that his last bout, he didn't look in a good way :( Edited January 18, 2018 by Kawabata bad speeling

He faced immense mental pressure even before he was promoted to yokozuna, and even more pressure after he was promoted. Being the only Japan-born yokozuna in many years, the public expectation on him is extremely high, and that's why after last March he only sat out one basho but attended all the other 4 bashos until the current one, apparently without completely healed. The worst thing is that his injury in last March was poorly handled. When he refused to kyujo after the Day-13 injury but continued to win the yusho, it reminded me of Takanohana who did the same thing which costed him his rikishi career. Now the same tragedy is repeated in Kisenosato and even worse ...... Edited January 18, 2018 by Dapeng

Rocks 1,810 Posted January 18, 2018 At the point where I think Tochi's foot hit's dirt it's not really the top of Takayasu's toe touching down but the front IMO. The front of a toe is not considered the top. if it were these matches would be over at the start as the front of their toes can touch down as they get into position at the start. At the very least this warranted a monoli. In the end it probably won't matter much. I expect whoever wins this Yusho to have at least 2 losses and maybe 3. Takayasu is far from out of it yet. Today will be interesting as Tochi is facing Takakeisho who he has lost to twice but at a time his injury was effecting him much more I think. Tochi does have a problem with little guys sometimes. Tochi looked pretty worn out after 2 tough matches in a row against Takayasu and Goeido. Should be a good match to watch hopefully.
Katooshu 3,483 Posted January 18, 2018 (edited) Tochinoshin's heel isnt even out in that picture you give as evidence. Pretty weak case made for a 'robbery' and a 'gift'. Watching it several times on HD I feel pretty confident saying the top of the foot is the first thing to go down or out; some people seem to forget that the top of the foot still matters, and it goes down a lot more clearly than that picture shows. It wasnt just a toe... A monoii wouldve been nice but I think the gyoji made the correct call, as he has to go with one of them. Tochinoshin and Takayasu are both looking strong and are very much in the race. Edited January 18, 2018 by Katooshu
