Recommended Posts

3 wins already, and Mitakeumi just needs 13 more this tournament for a guaranteed ozeki promotion.

The Takakeisho v. Tamawashi bout was one of the notable highlights of day 3.  Tamawashi landed a harite slap early in the bout, but Takakeisho did not take it lying down.  Before the bout was over, he attempted two harite of his own (although they did not seem to hit the mark).  But he used it effectively to distract Tamawashi after their second separation in the middle of the ring, allowing him to execute a charge and push his opponent out of the ring.  He is definitely no joke.  As much as I dislike Takanohana Oyakata's politics, I have to admire his ability to spot talent and train solid sumo wrestlers.  Takagenji may well nyumaku before the end of 2018.  And Takanoiwa should make a come back (depending on how serious his injuries are).  Props all around.

Agreed.  Also, the tadpoles are getting bigger and stronger so his signature belly 'bumpety bumpety' thing just isn't as effective as it used to be.  Always sad to see an ozeki in decline, but he still has some fight left in him.

Course he hasn't had a chance to really bump the lower ranks just yet, he has had to face both Ozeki and a sekiwake in his first 3 matches.  Course still has the Yokozuna ahead, but I think he should be ok in matches against the likes of Yoshikaze, Shodai, Okinoumi etc assuming he faces some of those guys in later rounds.  Feels a lot like the tournament from tochinoshin back in September and Tochiozan in November.  They were M1 and M2 respectively and had to face all of the top guys the first week, can be very tough since you are really not favored in your first 5-6 matches and by most accounts "should" lose them to the higher ranked opponents.

Also on another note, have some really intriguing matchups coming up here on day 4.  Definitely looking forward to seeing Tochinoshin vs Takayasu, two guys who have looked strong so far so should be a great bout.  Also looking forward to seeing if Ichinojo can come out with the same fire against Kakuryu as he showed yesterday.  Goeido vs Hokutofuji should also be fun as well as Kisenosato vs Kotoshogiku (what a thing it would be if Kisenosato lost his 3 bout in 4 days).

Should be a great round

I think Kise takes this with ease, while he's not 100%, Giku is only a frame of his former self.

So is Kisenosato.

Nice day, i loved Ichi´s kimboshi. Kisenosato is lame, sure, but still...

I also loved Hak´s face outside the dohyo, was like "i will kill that f* kid"....

Kakuryu is hanging on; gambate yokozuna!

So sad for Terunofuji...Damn im starting to remember of Baruto...

Tama underestimade Taka. Maybe he is a dwarf but it is a naughty one dwarf.

Tochinoshin is looking powerfull. Unfortunally for him i just made this comment. I always jinx the guy...

Not really, he's still got it but is going through injury recover which makes him not 100%. Giku just lost the mojo, that's what it seems like.

I am really looking forward to the tadpoles (Mitakeumi, Onosho, Takakeisho) and Tamawashi going at each other in the next couple of days. Any predictions?

I am surprised that Onosho is still having trouble staying on his feet. You would have thought it would have been corrected by now after the last basho. Also Mitakeumi is looking really strong so far. Takakeisho vs. Tamawashi lived up to my expectations on day 3 as both he and Tamawashi practice a similar kind of sumo despite differences in body type. Mitakeumi and Onosho will have their hands full.

I might have to eat my words but my prediction is that Takakeisho  will win both his bouts; Tamawashi will lose to Mitakeumi but beat Onosho. Sorry Onosho.

I am so sick of pull downs. Meisei avoided the first attempt to pull him down and immediately fell for the next.

Back to the ordinary:

Toyonoshima (0-2, fusen loss today) will rest also for bout 3 and try to put it all on the remaining 4 bouts - to get kachi-koshi - NHK mentioned that the oyakata told so.

I hope he can do it without aggravating the injury.

Takayasu got robbed. Tochinoshin's heel was out. I can't believe there wasn't even a monoli for that.

Takayasu only got Tochinoshinned - the head shimpan sat just where he could see that the foot wasn't out.

That should have been a torinaoshi though - Takayasu was the attacker, Tochinoshin was practically out as Takayasu touched down

it was really obvious from the replays that the heel didn't touch the ground outside the tawara

I guess we'll have only one yokozuna in the 2nd week

I haven't followed recently, has there been talks or calls for Kisenosato to retire? His record is abysmal last few basho. No Kachi Koshi for 5 basho, it's a bit too much for a yokozuna.

Kisenosato should retire - his mental strength is not yokozuna-like.

Now Hakuho loses to an 0-3 Yoshikaze with the flu or something. Giving me another loss in Seki-quad. What a friggin night. This is like some bad comedy show or something.

I'll have to see them again. When they showed they replay during the live broadcast it sure looked like the back of his heel rolled over and touched.
