I just saw the Kotonowaka-Takakeisho bout on the stream and have to struggle hard to keep the old ST reflexes in check.

I suggest watching Shonannoumi-Nishikifuji closely. And I wouldn't be surprised if Endo and Tamawashi rehearsed that move. B-)

Wonder if we'll ever find out the reason behind Kirishima's poor performance. Covid?

I doubt they'd let him compete with that, and if it turns out to be true we'd have another scandal at hand.

Watching Kotonowaka v. Takakeisho, it's the first time I ever had a certain thought watching sumo. The same thought others are hinting at above. Going to pretend it didn't happen.

I'd already had that thought, strongly at that, after Takakeisho's back to back bouts with Nishikigi and Oho.

My immediate reaction to Kotonowaka-Takakeisho was "that was weird"

Takakeisho goes up against Makekoshi/Kadoban Kirishima tomorrow, so if a thing were to be done why not do it then?

Takerufuji will face Asanoyama & Onosato will face Abi. Hoshoryu will face Kotonowaka to end tomorrow's proceedings.

Perhaps that matchup wouldn't have happened if it still mattered?

I can't believe we're back with this nonsense. Nobody gives a freebie when he's still in contention. Even in the dark ages of the OBSC it never happened. No way. It was lousy sumo from Kotonowaka, and you're acting as if that can't ever happen.

Never thought I'd see a kakenage attempt from Takakeisho. It was just like watching jungyo or a charity tournament where everyone wins by yorikiri.

Not to mention the obvious fact that if a favour really were to be done for Takakeisho, you'd never let it get to the belt. You'd just let him shove you out quickly, because, that's what he does

What we should be talking about is how comparatively calm Takakeisho looked when it got to a yotsu battle. He's clearly been practicing his defence and it showed -- albeit Kotonowaka didn't show his best sumo.

Aonishiki's winning streak comes to an end at 20, at the hands of Nagamura. And that decided the Sandanme yusho since the lower-ranked contender, Higonomaru, was beaten by Ryuo who will fight Tochimaru in a kettei-sen for the Jonidan yusho on senshuraku.

If someone had suggested Takakeisho would get his KK out of kadoban with a yotsu win over Kotonowaka, I'd have politely pointed them towards the ridiculous predictions thread.
On seeing it actually happen, I didn't not immediately think OBSC or yaocho - and I still don't think that.

Takerufuji ain't no choker then. That was an emphatic win over a competent and in-form sekiwake. One more win from the last two days feels likely now.
If I wasn't such a godless infidel, I'd pray for his continuing health.

Kirishima is getting into Terunofuji silly bugger territory now. Something's wrong (maybe a back injury) and he can't get wins.
He should have gone kyujo when he went MK, and thereby maximised his recovery time. Kadoban is the same whether you go 7-8 or 3-12, so what's the point risking further damage?

If he goes kyujo, he cannot attend his shisho’s final senshuraku party before the heya formally closes.

Asanoyama could be a good opponent for Takerufuji tomorrow, he's aggressive and when he gets beaten it's often by a rikishi turning the tables at the edge - something Takerufuji hasn't had to do yet.

I think Koto was too eager to throw TKK at the edge he exposed his side too much for TKK to drive him out. Good work by Hamster standards, who seems to get more used to someone touching his belt now.

Corrected.

Takerufuji is a monster and this isn't even his final form. I hope he stays healthy. BUT the extra shove, long after Wakamotoharu was out, wasn't necessary. I hope this was just an incident. A rookie doesn't shove a Sekiwake in his debut basho, no matter how good he is.

I saw it a bit differently on the replay. Wakamotoharu was setting up for a throw at the edge, and Takerufuji wasn't falling for that two days in a row. Takerufuji pulled back from his opponent to deny the throw, and then had to resume his forward momentum which resulted in the final shove. Since Takerufuji waited and watched at the edge while Wakamotoharu wandered up the aisle, I took to be a good finishing instinct and not malice.

Not if they don't test ... no idea what the protocols are in Japan in general and in sumo in particular these days.

He's been doing that since jonokuchi.

Takerufuji is not a particularly compassionate, caring or cuddly individual. He just wants to kick ass.

Flash forward to May 2027 "YDC reprimands Takerufuji for inappropriate conduct".

Takerufuji’s tachiai is just something else. Hosh and Sato are left. Koto was playing with his food too much
