Basho Talk Hatsu 2018 (SPOILERS)

I was watching Jason's Day 6 videos, even though I saw the matches live I like to hear his take. While he was talking about Kisenosato, he said that he elected not to have surgery.

Jason may know quite a bit about sumo but I believe his statement was wrong. I doubt very much if Kisenosato elected not to have surgery. A rikishi can inform people how he feels, but I doubt if even a yokozuna can make decisions regarding whether to have or avoid surgery for an injury. I think the only person who can make such a decision is his oyakata. Even after receiving medical advice recommending surgery, if the oyakata determines that it should be avoided, his is the only decision that counts.

Wow. terrible tachi-ai from Mitoryu but he still won. Dude is strong.

Yes, Mitoryu can be rather clumsy and ugly to watch, but he has that 'I lift my arm just a bit, you go flying' strength, at least up to the level he's competed so far. He also became amateur yokozuna in 2015 with a kotenage that nearly put his opponent in tears.

I've seen him manhandle guys like Asanoyama in the amateurs just a couple years ago and I expect him to reach makuuchi fairly quickly.

And Im really pleased to see Kyokutaisei with a 6-2 at J1 (the loss to Azumaryu was very questionable). Looks like he could finally make makuuchi!

Unfortunetly going in the other direction  is Osunaarashi, who finds himself with a single win and losing to opponents he'd  once dominated. It's painful to watch. Yamaguchi looks like he may be sliding again too.

Yago continues to be dominant in makushita. Torakio and Shoji finding a bit of a wall in sandamne, and the new Mongolian recruit Yoshoyama already on the verge of an MK in jonokuchi, despite going 3-0 in mae zumo.

Mitakeumi will make yokozuna in 2019.

Kakuryū–Tochinoshin was a bit weird. It looked like Tochinoshin didn’t want to have a yotsu battle. I’m a bit sad the latest we can get Kakuryū–Mitakeumi is day 13 (right?). Takayasu and Gōeidō being ōzeki would get days 14 and 15 I think…

Yep. But I doubt either will be undefeated on Day 15 anyway.

Will be interesting to see the video of Sokokurai-Ishiura tomorrow.  Was Sokokurai's knee down first?

Does Takekaze retire this basho or fight in Juryo? I think he'll finish about 4-11 so he would be demoted to Juryo. A lot of guys fight on but others who weren't accustomed to fighting there (Dejima, Kyokutenho) retire when they're going to be demoted. I think he could make it back though.

Sokokurai-Ishiura looked like some alternative form of grappling from an obscure central-Asian country

Murata got Yorikiri'd by Enho in Makuhita. Enho is now 2-2.

What even is 70kg weight disadvantage and 11cm height difference?

Absolutely bonechilling command to a slow Tochiozan by Konosuke

What about Tochiozan irritates so many people before a bout starts?

Healthy Tochinoshin is just joy to behold. I dare say he is my favourite watch this basho along with Mitakeumi.

Speaking of Mitakeumi, he should have won that. I mean Ichinojo has been REALLY good this basho. But I wanted him to win.

So many people are 7-1.

Yep, I thought Mitakeumi looked pretty tired yesterday. I still picked him but it was iffy. Good win for Ichinojo and a very solid comeback win for Tochinoshin.

That was one weird match. Shodai won the start and was pushing Kakuryu well then splat.

Is Osunaarashi at 1-6 at J8 in danger of demotion to Makushita? How many more wins does he need to stave that off?  When he and Endo came up at the same time there was talk of them having a long and storied rivalry and both making Yokozuna, before injury and inappropriate medical treatment wrecked it for both of them. Very sad how injuries have made a couple of very promising rikishi end up with mediocre careers. I think Endo could still get there but Osunaarashi is just a shell of his former self. In an alternative universe both are currently injury free, both are now Ozekis and the big discussion in sumo is which one will make Yokozuna first...

He needs 5-10 to stay in.

Definitely was. A shame there was no Mono-ii.

Kagayaki has a belt game?!

Mitakeumi should’ve gone for a shitatehineri. But props to Ichinojō– I’m not sure if he’s over his injuries or what, but he’s certainly using his size well this basho unlike up to now.

Everyone trying to make it easy for Kakuryū. This might just be a boring yūshō… unless Kakuryū keeps the zenshō hopes up.

Tochinoshin looks like he’s feeling pain in his injured leg… I hope I’m imagining it.

I was expecting that kind of sumō the whole basho from Chiyotairyū but it never happened. Then comes Gōeidō… lol

Edit: I didn’t notice Sōkokurai’s knee touching down. Ishiura was already airborne though… maybe should’ve been a torinaoshi? Unless that stuff only matters when you’re out and Ishiura should’ve won…

Check the Ozumo Discussions section. He may have bigger things to worry about than demotion to makushita.

What's up with the hopefuls Takakeisho and Hokutofuji in this basho? Despite their victories over yokozunas, they are having a really bad tournament so far. Is it the nerves and pressure from being promoted and public expectations?  Well, no one here can really answer that definitively but thought I would pose the question since it's kind of bothering me to see them not live up to their expectations so far in this basho.

Cheers,

I woke up in the middle of the night, put the sumo on. There was kagayaki going right for the belt and wining with a throw. Wow. Mitakiumi got no second step against the young monster ichinojo. Kakaruu looks like he's cruising now.

Methinks Ishiura was robbed. I don't see any part of his body touching down before Sokokurai lands on his knee, Sokokurai's body wasn't flying, it had been Ishiura's attack all the way.
What is it that I missed? Or were the shimpan sleeping?

Too late now.
