Basho Talk - Aki 2017 (SPOILERS)

This is definitely Goeido's (8-1) basho to lose. Harumafuji (6-3) is two losses back. He needs to win out and hope Goeido losses at least once. They (should) meet in the last match on the last day. Hopefully the yusho will be on the line. Go Ama!

There was one a couple years or so back where the kid kept falling on his backside at tachiai and the gyoji kept having them line up and start over again and again. You had to give it to the kid for how he kept trying, but he was way outside his weight class (figuratively and literally)

Hattorizakura was terrified and wanted to lose on purpose. Watch the video @dada78641 linked. If Hattorizakura had known, what Kinjo did to Maeta a few months later, he probably wouldn't have shown up for the bout. Poor kid, but at least he's no quitter.

Well, I don't think Wakaichiro will win. From what I've seen he's not the best at dealing with rikishi far bigger than himself.

I wonder who Y1w Harumafuji (6-3) will meet on Day 11? By ranking, it would be M6e Ichinojo (5-4). By record, it would be M9e Takanoiwa (7-2). O1w Goeido (8-1) would probably have the same opponent on Day 12.

I think it's too early to call it anyone's basho just yet. None of the leaders have looked so solid that you wouldn't expect them to drop a win or two. That goes especially for Goeido.

That Hattorizakura match is not what I described but I suspect it's what I meant. Thanks to all for the links.  The Maeta match, and the similar one a couple days after made me angry. I hope the NSK has learned that it's ok to help the guy and not just sit there watching him bleed onto the dohyo.

If he wins this one, and continue to win the next one in Nov., will the NSK promote him to yokozuna? If so, there will be 5 yokozuna! How excellent!

He lost to Kotoshogiku, henkaed two days in a row against Yoshikaze and the very obviously injured Tochinoshin, got bulldozed to the dohyo edge by Chiyotairyuu and his win against Onosho wasn't that convincing either. Nope, not what I would call very strong.

If Goeido wins Aki, he will probably make-koshi in Kyushu and be kadoban in January.

What?  Are you saying that Daishomaru was favored in your mind because he had more wins for the current basho coming in?  That's really silly.  It would mean that Onosho did not upset Harumafuji this tournament, because Harumafuji had more losses at that point.  And I certainly can't see any other realistic metric for how you could say someone who hasn't been in the top half of the division was the favorite over a former sekiwake who's not that far removed from his peak.

I myself have reason to believe that with his inconsistency at the ozeki rank, plus having JUST been kadoban, the YSK will not consider him for promotion. And four yokozuna has to do with it too.

Enho after winning today has entered into a six way tie for 8th place on the consecutive wins from debut list at 19-0. He stands in the company of the following rikishi:

Konishiki
Daishoyama
Roho
Sakaizawa
Ishiura

Should he win his sixth match he will enter into a three tie for sixth place with Akiseyama and Tsurugisho.

Not many were paying attention, and neither was Harumafuji, but beating Shodai on day 9 marked his 707th makuuchi victory, moving him past Musashimaru solely into 6th place on the list. As of now he is 39 wins away from tying Taiho, who has 746.

Usually you don't see a lot of people coming back once they've started the basho kyujo, or go kyujo during the basho, but Aki alone we've seen two guys come back. In Aoiyama's case, he got yokozuna Harumafuji right off the bat. The last time someone went kyujo, decided to come back, and had to face a yokozuna in their first match back was Kitanonada in Nagoya 1961. Aoiyama's case was the 8th time that this has happened since the Showa era. Only once has someone beat a yokozuna on their first day back, which was komusubi Banshunada over Chiyonokuni in Aki 1951.

Endo put a lot of pressure on his left ankle today against Tokushoryu in hidariyotsu when Tokushoryu pivoted him and all the pressure was on the left ankle. He did solid Endo sumo and beat Tokushoryu 7th in a row so not especially tough opponent for him but still good proof that his ankle is getting quite good. Rusty he is and not in full physical strength but looks like a good decision to enter. His 4 losses haven't been bad either.

 

 

Hokutofuji has not looked like his usual self in last few days. Today reason came clear as he got wrist injury in about against Onosho. Somehow timid and not sharp at all. Yesterday had so bad bout against Tochiozan without any kind of sumo and today he had no real power against Tamawashi not having horse power as he usually has. Clearly favouring his wrist which is bad for both oshi and yotsu.

MItakeumi has shown genki sumo at times but today clumsy and slow reaction to Aoiyama's pull which was certain to come. Tachi-ai cautious and yet went for quite easy pull. Aoiyama is one of the best pullers out there though really having great timing and especially when he has his pushing attack good, he can pull very well and powerfully. Bad loss by Mitakeumi, good and surprisingly effortless win by Aoiyama getting his first win of the basho.

 

Yoshikaze showed many good sides in his bout against Shodai. Good tachi-ai, well performed arm positioning, good left hand straight insertion and techically superior and sharp attack. 6 wins in a row with some great fights like the one against Shohozan. Great stuff.

Asanoyama can do sumo. Chiyotairyu's yotsu bout against Tochinoshin was a sign of great self confidence and Tochinoshin's ailment. I have never seen this good Chiyotairyu as in this basho. If Ishiura can't beat Takarafuji from that position, he must go and gain some power in juryo. It has looked like makuuchi rikishi have learned to cope very well with Ishiura¨s style but to lose when getting behind Takarafuji was awkward.

Takakeisho's sumo was perfect against Harumafuji. Kept Harumafuji off the belt with solid blocks and then beautifully timed evasive action. He had no problems in the bout at all. Tachi-ai worked well, after that he had very good posture and balance throughout the bout not letting Harumafuji get close at all. Just simply awesome sumo. This was Takakeisho's best sumo of the basho. Well earned kinboshi.

If an ozeki (even Goeido) can win two consecutive yusho, they will promote him! I have no doubt on that.

But I rather doubt that if Goeido wins the very next two tournaments, that the remaining four yokozuna are still there in january. With Kakuryu and also Harumafuji are close to their intai (Kakuryu managed to participate for 15 days only in a single basho this year and achieved then just 10 wins), and even an intai of Kisenosato wouldn't really surprise me at all.

Chiyotairyu is winning this thing. He has one weapon, the tachiai, and he blew that today big time. And then he beat Tochinoshin in a belt battle. Piggies are currently crossing the sky

That bout is what I imagine drunken bar room brawls to look like, if they were decided by sumo rules.

Was I the only one who positively cringed at this?  When Ishiura was holding onto the back of Takurafuji's mawashi it reminded me of one of those Jason and the Argonauts type films with the tiny protagonist riding on the back of a giant flailing claymation cyclops.
