Reports are that indeed day 14 also was a sell-out – for the NSK.

7 days of full house (5 last year, but 8 in 2009 before the yaocho scandal), 4200 spectators more than last year, 86 500.

for years the Yomiuri reported 55,000 at every Giants game. Every game. People quoted the figure in the media and online without questioning it.

However, back in 2002 when some foreign writers noticed large areas with no fans - but the following day 55,000 in the papers - one writer contacted Bunkyo-ku fire safety officials who confirmed a capacity of 46,000 (seats). This slowly filtered down through mags, into the wider media, and now into the daily papers where correct figures are released. Even the affectionately nicknamed Gomiuri follows suit now.

Regarding sumo, as anyone who has ever been to the Kokugikan, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka basho knows, the 'full house banners' MUST come down on weekends or holidays regardless of the large areas of unsold seats/masu-seki.

No doubt the NSK 'want' to sell out but repeating their hopes and obvious porky pies without checking for yourself does not make it real. I have been in Nagoya for the last few days and on Day 14 asked the ticket office if it was a sell out. It was not. Many masu-seki remained in the late afternoon.

This was confirmed by photos of the many masu-seki unsold and unoccupied the whole day in both the east and west areas.

The world was once flat IIRC.

Day 15: same sell-out 7500 spectators as day 14 – no one will ever know how much are really in the hall on all the days.

All news now agree that Kise is back to square 1 again: riji-cho and chief judge both say that 11 wins (also as jun-yusho) is not enough: just an ozeki result.

i don't think anyone mentioned him this basho but let's all have a moment and think about the best Maegashira around. Of course i am talking about Yoshikaze that finished this basho with a lacklustre 7-8 but was never in real danger of being demoted in Juryo.

the guy flew through the bottom 5 divisions back in 2004-2006 and never looked back (well ... he did drop to the top spot of Juryo twice but that was back in 2007. Both times came right back with a 8-7)

this basho marked his 6th straight year as a Maegashira (he never was a sanyaku) with just 3 missed bouts in all. That's 36 bashos in a row ranked from M15 to M1.

not to mention that in the last 10 tournaments he is ranked between M10 and M6 .... that is a feat to accomplish.

so yeah .... if there is a title for the "Master of survival-ism in the depths of Makuuchi", then Yoshikaze should get it.

7 1/5 years since his initial promotion and just 2 bashos in Juryo 1e. (Showing respect...)

The YDC praised only Hakuho and seemed to confirm that Kisenosato has to start from the beginning again, but then Uchiyama hinted again that a 15-0 might get him the rope.

They didn't even issue the encouragement warning for Harumafuji as promised, just threatening with another encouragement warning for Aki if he doesn't finish with at least 12 wins.

NHK news show a different picture from the YDC about Harumafuji again than e. g Asahi with the above and chance for Kise or Sanspo etc. (Kyodo) with 12 wins for HF and back to square one for Kise.

Uchiyama: “For a yokozuna around 2 losses is the limit. This much kuroboshi (losses) is unacceptable. Both ankles being injured notwithstanding, if this situation continues there is the possibility that it affects the go on or go out for him. Next basho is crucial.”

Nearly the same words as last basho and no action.

I think it's because the notorious complainers from years past are all off the committee now, the current guys are either more measured or just indecisive.

I doubt he’s going to find juryo a soft landing. Upper juryo next basho is going to be a bloodbath, with tough up and comers like Osunraashi, Endo (most likely), Chiyootori and Kyokushu mixing It up with injury recovering Makuuchi veterans such as Baruto and Jokoryu. I doubt the older, slower, weaker Wakanosato will be able to get a kk, never mind even sniff another yusho. He'll last longer than Miyabiyama, but not that much.

As to the Yusho, it was more the fan in me speaking. But however unlikely, it is not at all impossible. All those strong contenders you have mentioned will soon find their place in makuuchi (Osunaarashi, Endo) go for good (Baruto?); or stay as regular Juryo dwellers. In any case, once in a while the level is such that the yusho might "fall into the lap" of a soon-to-retire veteran. Fomer Toki won it a few months shy of his retirement, in a basho that saw Baruto of all people sitting out before day 1.

Rare occurrence -all yusho from Jonokuchi up to Makuuchi were decided on day 13. First time since Natsu 1949 when the 15 day basho was invented.

Well .. this query prompted to make another one of my own and i found out that Kuniazuma (the Brazilian) is the rikishi with the most non-sekitori Yushos.

He has 5 and the only other active rikishi with 4 are Goeido, Tanzo and Tosayutaka (he has a chance next basho to tie Kuniazuma if he gets the Makushita Yusho).

Active with 3 yusho are: Aoiyama, Baruto, Ikeru, Shohozan, Jokoryu and Tokitenku .

Ikeru could realistically catch up with the brazilian on his way up the ranks.
