Odd or Interesting Sumo Names

Recommended Posts

What are some of the oddest or most interesting sumo names? I always thought Orora's name was a little odd.

I was also wondering if anyone knew any rikishi that had the same name twice. Basically like a "Wakawaka" or a "Kotokoto" or something of that nature.

In 2009 I posted a list of funny bout pairings that included links to the Sumo Reference. Here is an updated version (the old links do not work anymore).

Here are 17 bouts between rikishi that I would have loved to see if they had ever come to pass:

1) A really musical conflict between this guy and that guy

2) A bout for bird lovers between this guy and that guy.

3) A bout for those who speak English between this guy and that guy.

4) Another bout for English speakers between this guy and that guy.

5) And another bout for English speakers between this guy (he has a nice second name as well) and that guy.

6) Martial Arts at its best between this guy and that guy.

7) Boy meets girl (look for initial shikona)

8) It must have been a dirty bout between this guy and that guy.

9) A bout of rank-and-filers between this guy and that guy.

10) "Say hi!" vs. "Say ho!"

11) A really playful bout between this guy and that guy.

12) An African bout between this guy and that guy.

13) A bout of regions between this guy and that guy.

14) A bout of charisma between this guy and that guy.

15) A somewhat bizarre bout between this guy and that guy.

16) A bout that is only interesting on second sight between this guy and that acronym

17) And a bout with Forum implications between this nice person and that nice person (look at the second shikona in the shikona list).

18)And, of course there is the eternal struggle between Good and Evil.

When I first moved to Japan over 20 years ago and saw sumo on TV I was always imagining that some rikishi would come up with the name of "Hanamizu".

It's always good to see that there are other maniacs around.

(Seihi and Seiho made me laugh quite a bit.)

I posted it only recently elsewhere here, but this guy is my current favourite.

as a Polish speaker, I find the shikona Kozakura pretty funny as it literally means "goat hen".

If we're going there, Kise in Hebrew is chair. If his shikona was Kisenosaton, it would have been perfect, but it's good enough..

And Aruma in Hebrew is naked lady. Take it from there.

Aran still makes me laugh (and not just his sumo) considering his real name is Alan. I can imagine when he joined and Masuiyama called him Aran. It also makes me think of the 80s song from The Cars: "And I ran, I ran so far away..."

That wasn't from The Cars but - even more aptly - A Flock Of Seagulls.

What about Obamaumi? Notice when he debuted.

That's when I started calling Bushuyama "Barackoyama". Edited by Jakusotsu

Do Daishodai or Yamamotoyama qualify?

The latter now known as moto-Yamamotoyama, I assume.

The bill's in the mail.

I'm also partial to Wakanokawa.

Edit: Just remembered Yamanakayama, too.

Goshozakura is very funny if read in Bulgarian.
Gosho-za-kura. Gosho is a popular Bulgarian name and the whole thing basically means: "Gosho for the d**k"...
(Couldn't resist not posting it, sorry :) )

Yotsuguruma is a bit of an odd shikona. "Four wheels"? Anyone know the reason behind this?

(sorry, no sumodb link, as it seems to be down for me right now...)

My favorite is without a doubt Bungonishiki. Mugendai is another that has a funny ring to it.

Other tongue-twisters one would include Tsurushinobu and Takachihonomine.

Baraki sounds like a diminutive (or maybe just a "cute") word for "bar" in greek.

well ... most of the times we use "baraki" rather than "bar" when we are talking about going out for a drink. (Laughing...)

But that's so fitting! Baraki is a diminutive sumo wrestler. I've enjoyed following his progress to far. I hope that he continues to do well.

Baraki always reminds me of Ibaraki prefecture in Japan. Unfortunately he's not from there...

But his heya is there, Shikihide-beya in Ryugasaki.
