Katooshu 3,135 Posted July 18, 2023 Nishikigi wins again. Should be promoted to sanyaku and get a special prize, both for the first time. I'd say it's already a Cinderella story for him yusho or not.
Chartorenji 235 Posted July 18, 2023 That puts Wakamotoharu's chances in a bad spot. Still has to go through his Sekiwake rivals and the Ozeki, even with his state not up to usual par.

Yaochozuna 137 Posted July 18, 2023 I liked that friendly gesture between Kirishima and Ura at the end of their bout. Both seem to be decent guys. It reminded me of a friendly handpat Takayasu gave Mitakeumi after Mitakeumi beat him when Takayasu was ozeki (can't remember which basho it was).
dingo 1,160 Posted July 18, 2023 Pretty lame henka from Kinbouzan. That's all I've got to say about today.

Better than the one that Hokuoho tried , at least Kinbouzan was victorious. Edited July 18, 2023 by Fashiritētā
BuBa 72 Posted July 18, 2023 (edited) 21 hours ago, Akinomaki said: Roga initially was treated as Mongolian and there haven't been any news contradicting that his father is Mongolian, so one could call him Mongolian, if only he wouldn't hate to be called that - and Arashio/Sokokurai also is Mongolian from Inner Mongolia So which is it. Does he hate or doesn’t like to be called Mongolian. Hate is a strong word. I don’t buy that. His father is Mongolian, his name is Mongolian, he was recruited from Mongolia. The reason he is in sumo is because of Mongolian connection. Most mongols regard Tuvans as mongols for cultural and historic reasons, notwithstanding their Turkic language. So there. PS: I can’t find the interview, but I remember Roga telling in that interview how he is trying to learn Mongolian. Edited July 18, 2023 by BuBa

Midorifuji apparently had that deep grip on a loose mawashi and then was awarded one at a tight mawashi. Yes that is the assumption , no need to rehash the obvious. But did you actually see the loose mavashi? I for one would like to see the pics of Kirishimas back knot before the stoppage. If I remember correctly this same Inosuke let Tobizaru wrestle with complete undone knot and loose to the armpits mavashi. As far as grip goes, watch that bout again, Midorifuji’s hand was clearly on mavashi and not on top of the knot. Let alone around the mavashi knot. Neither, these are my words of exaggeration - something I usually do when I don't just give the contents of an article - and derived from the mood in the original article. He just insisted that he is Russian when he was still listed as Mongolian - after he changed the shusshin and officially became that, there was no mention any more that he doesn't like to be called a Mongolian. This time I added the extra exaggeration of hate, but not the emoji others usually use in such cases - I don't use them, I prefer to let others decide if they want to think it's irony or not. #1HENKAFAN 40 Posted July 18, 2023 I don't understand this argument about Roga being had. He used to be billed as Mongolian until he requested to be listed as Russian. If he was born and raised in Russian territory and sees himself as a Russian national then why wouldn't he be Russian? If anything I find it strange he wasn't listed as Russian by the kyokai in the first place.

Because he was listed as Mongolian also at high school in Japan and that because he had lived with his father in Mongolia when he came to Japan - and in Japan as a minor you get the shusshin of your parents. He became an adult for Haru 2019 and only then could request to have his shusshin changed. 2
Tigerboy1966 1,376 Posted July 18, 2023 By booking Kirishima vs Daieisho for tomorrow rather than it's natural Saturday slot the matchmakers have given themselves some wiggle room in case Hokutofuji keeps winning. You know, with all the focus on the ozeki race, I had almost forgotten that there was this "yusho" thing going on.
