Nagoya 2023 discussion (results)

It's frankly amazing how stable yet mobile Hakuōhō is. And I still can't stop gushing about his manners. If he keeps this up, hands down no one will have an issue with his hinkaku if he gets promoted to yokozuna.

Daieishō really needs to fix his overextension. He's thrown away so many key matches - including two back to back to Kiribayama - by getting sidestepped and thrust down while off balance.

I expected better from Kirishima-Wakamotoharu. Either Kirishima has massively upped his game or Wakamotoharu is cracking under the pressure.

Let's say Hoshoryu gets an 11-4Y in a play off... would that be enough?

Probably yes. But such scenario is not very likely.

The fate of the yusho is in maegashira hands now. If Nishikigi beats Hakuoho and Hokutofuji, he gets 12 wins. If Hokutofuji bets Endo and Nishikigi, he gets 12. Even Hakuoho can get to 12 by winning out. It would require a very specific combination of their bouts' results for everyone to end no higher than 11-4

Takayasu must be quite seriously injured if he resorts to feeble sumo like today. Wonder why he doesn't go kyujo already. Sad to see him like this.

Man, imagine if Hokuseiho had that trademark Mongolian killer instinct... he would be an unstoppable monster. He'll get better over time but aggression and drive are not things you can teach, you either have them or you don't.

That's what they used to say about Ichinojo...

I know, a win over Mitakeumi isn't something special nowadays, but it's still nice how Ura pulled that off.

I wonder if Hakuoho will show up tomorrow. The fall looked painful. He's KK, so why risk the career for one or two ranks further up? Oh, i forgot...sumo...

I wondered about that, too. The camera showed Miyagino Oyakata looking very concerned as he watched Hakuoho lying on the dohyo wincing in pain.  If I recall correctly, at one point, Hakuoho reached over and touched his taped shoulder before getting up.

At this rate, we might see a former yusho winner in Sandanme. How often did it happen before?

Only previous example was Terunofuji. There'd never even been a former yusho winner in makushita until him.

I forgot about his fall all the way to Jonidan.

Wakaikari moves up to sandanme to hand Haruyama his first loss. The son of former Oikari is quite impressive and definitely one to watch - one of these smaller rikishi with strength beyond their size.

DB has Waikari's name as Seigo, but Wikipedia has his name as Chugo. I'm wondering which one is correct

While Tochiseiryu adds to his 'impressive' record of reaching 6-0 without ever going 7-0; now the 6th time :-(

Was thinking about this earlier day, and after watching several other vids with him in them, it's nearly impossible not to root for him, just a lot of respect for the sport it seems

At first Ura-Tobizaru looked so pedestrian, then yank, counteryank, and collapse looked like something right out of shōkkiri.

Troubling to see Hokuseihō not giving as much difficulty to his opponents as he should be.

I can see why Hakuhō was deadset on giving Hakuōhō his shikona. Frankly? It wouldn't have been wasted.

Hakuōhō yūshō, anyone?

That's a real possibility, at this point. However, he remains a dark horse for a number of reasons. Corporate Yokozuna or not, he's 19 years old and does not have as much experience as most Makuuchi rikishi do have. I mean that he can be susceptible to fall prey of the wisdom of some Grand Old Man. Tomorrow's bout vs. Hokutofuji will be a grand test for him to this extent. And he will certainly have yet another uneasy opponent on senshuraku.

Reiwa Monster aside, I am smelling a 12-3Y at this point. Nishikigi is 4-5 against Ryuden and he's in top form, so I can see him going 11-3 tomorrow, alongside the winner of Hakuoho vs. Hokutofuji. If the latter emerges victorious, we will possibly have a deciding Nishikigi vs. Hokutofuji on senshuraku (we could get that anyway, with Hakuoho visiting perhaps Hoshoryu especially if he ends winning his Day 14 bout).  Hoshoryu, of course, is condemned to win out both for his Ozeki bid and the yusho.

Last line, Kotonowaka is 9-4 with today and facing Ura tomorrow. As a Komusubi he has already faced all the top guns, and with 4 losses he's not a front-runner for the yusho (unlikely to get troublesome Hokutofuji or Hakuoho on senshuraku, that is). He can really end up with a 11-4, which means that he could force a Sekiwake slot for himself. Are we on the path of having no Ozeki promotions but a Sekiwake promotion this basho?

Hakuoho can potentially take the yusho in his 4th ozumo tournament... crazy

Crazy indeed. So far, the only rikishi winning the yusho three basho after being in Makushita was Terunofuji on his way up again.

We can have a real anticlimax though if Hokutofuji and Wakamotoharu win tomorrow. No ozeki promotion and the yusho decided on day 14.
