It certainly isn't a lock for Takayasu yet, mostly because he is Takayasu,  but I think only the worst choke ever or a major injury soon keeps it from him.  He only has 2 sanyaku left but one is Shodai who he hasn't beat in 2 years. Even with that  I don't see any of the chasers getting 12 wins. Barring a major choke and losing a playoff at 11-4 I think Takayasu has his first yusho.

I think the worst choke in recent memory is still the aforementioned Goeido losing his 3 win lead in spectacular fashion. That was an unbelievable train wreck that happened in extra slow motion.

He reminds me of someone who used to stare at me from the mirror. The best intentions, the not-so-spectacular results. His decision to refrain from something he knows would be past his abilities is disheartening, yet also the only logical solution.

I love him.

I enjoyed day 10 matches. Shimanoumi's shocking win against Terunofuji was a reason I keep watching sumo.

It is finally Takayasu's turn at the yusho.   All  I can say is "it's about time!"   Perhaps, this will propel him to get his Ozeki rank back.

Hoshoryu may never be as good as his uncle but considering the current competition, he may not need to be.  If he continues to improve, who knows how far he will go.

His uncle, ironically, burst into the higher ranks during a time of change - his tsuna basho coinciding with the very final days of the "TakaWaka vs Hawaiians" generation. So the "current competition" point also applied to an extent...

EDIT

On second thought, that makes me realise that all the hatsu yusho happening these days are due to the fact that we're missing someone like Asashoryu: someone head and shoulders above the competition, rising up and preying on the weary, old yokozuna / not-quite-there ozeki.

He's been in the sumo world for 21 years so he's doing something right. He won sansho and kinboshi as a rikishi and has done his best to keep the heya going in tragic circumstances and through an extremely difficult period of time. Not everyone is cut out for such a role, and him recognising that is hardly deserving of mockery.

Not mocking him.  He had many years as a mainstay in the makuuchi, and he is to be commended for that.  His lifestyle and organizational abilities have long been considered to be on the bizarre side.  He recognizes that, and he is well aware that he is not cut out to be one of the kyokai's shining lights.

Video footage of said balagan here. Bonus footage of a very blatant dame-oshi by Shishi immediately afterwards:

That was not a blatant dame-oshi in Makushita, even if it was called that with a deep British accent.. That was a strong push- out in the flow. I suggest watching more Makushita and it will quickly become apparent that it's no biggie. Makushita is a very "active" division.

Yeah, I agree. Young guys are taught to go as hard as possible. Learning to turn that off just outside the bales is something that comes with experience. It isn't easy.

I like Takayasu's chances, mostly because he seems to have had a fire lit under him this basho. I recall a couple of us mentioned how strong he was looking last week when it was a seven-way tie for the lead. It ain't over yet, by a long shot, though. In addition to Shodai, who has beaten him the last three times they faced one another, amazingly, Oknoumi is also a recent nemesis. Even though Okinoumi is 3-7 at the moment, he was MK in the last two basho but still beat Takayasu in each. And, as Terunofuji saw today, one can't let up. No megashira can be disregarded. As someone mentioned above, it's one of the things that keeps it fun to watch.

We're getting soft, that's all. You youngsters will never know what it was like back then.

Listen, when I think of people arguing over "whose foot was out" on those grainy kinescopes, and having to mimeograph the Sumo games pairings, then posting on those cranky IBM Selectrics, I have nothing but mad props for you guys!(Heart...)

I love him.

I dare say that the ozumo world Japanese culture world needs more people like him. There's way too many incompetent people who earned their position on something other than merit / merit from another occupation with a very different set of skills, who are unwilling to loosen their grip.

So now the big question is, does it save Hakuho from the YDC?

I think I said this another another post, but I do hope this allows for a 'one last chance' for Hakuho. That being the next tournament he enters must be:

  • July at the latest
  • Competed in each day
  • 10+

That 10+ feels generous, but still.

Somehow I have a sneaking feeling that, if bad news about the Olympics comes out, we'll also have seen the last of Hakuho this basho.

Yeah there would be no surprises there.

That said, this would be a very sad outcome. I've no doubt Hakuho would have gone out on top if not for the Olympic dream.

The fairytale is of course he comes back for one more zensho and retires in style, like Kitanoumi wanted to if not for being asked to carry on till the Kokugikan was completed.

I know there's not a lot of love for Hakuho in some circles, but I would 100% be behind this.

Don't know the answer, but my initial thought was that this puts pressure on Hakuho to follow suit.

I made a similar comment on another thread.   Hak can't be too far behind unless he can reverse the time.
