Artistic Gymnastics Cup is on NHK G. No Juryo sumo today and Makuuchi already started. Still broadcasting gymnastics. (:

I guess you've got it worse then.

Tochiozan has quietly put together a five-bout winning streak.

QQ kicked in just in time to see Tochinoshin stay perfect. Nicely done. Probably his easiest win so far.

It will be interesting to see how Takakeisho will fare in the remaining 8 days after re-entering. It seems as if he's going to attempt to secure a KK, despite the injury.

He starts with Aoiyama tomorrow and he's been dreadful so far. It will be interesting to see who is in better shape.

I had praised Takakeisho for having the good sense to heal up rather than aggravate his injury like these guys usually do. But, here we go again...

I did enjoy the shimpan looking like he wanted a handful of Chiyotairyu's gigantic butt like...I don't know if he was trying to hold it away by using The Force or if he was thinking, "Back it up right here, big guy" but it was amusing either way. Kakuryu looked really strong in that bout.

You can actually watch it dawn on Kotoshogiku's face that there's no way he's going to win the match.

Happy to see Mitakeumi doing well at the difficult rank of komusubi. Of course it might be a different story if the sanyaku were at full strength, but even so, I still have high hopes for him.

Last but not least, sympathy pains for Enho. He's gonna be feeling that impact for a hot minute.

I have been wondering why it has all those square marks on it and it is so beat up. Anyone got any ideas - some form of cupping or something else?

Anyone who's spent enough time at a bodybuilding gym knows what they are. Those marks are scar tissue from injecting (slang "pinning") PEDs. The glutes and inner thigh are popular sites for this. I presume those square plasters are covering some of the fresher ones.

There is a very good photo of a former Mr Olympia about to go on stage with a backside that looks identical to Tochinoshin's, but it's eluding me at the moment...

(For the record I have no problem with an informed consenting adult using PEDs, and I am not attacking Tochinoshin. There are many PEDs that do not require pinning, too.)

I wondered about that...

That's possible, but it was reported last basho that he had suffered a torn thigh muscle, so there could be some non-PDE therapy going on (he was using cryo treatments last year, IIRC).  His wife's a doctor, so wouldn't she be a good source of non-quack advice?(Thinkingindepth...)

Kak is looking quite imposing this basho. One of his more power-based showings so far...a few people mentioned that they thought he'd added some weight?

Could be right and I don't doubt he might use those to heal but I always thought they were protecting the zits on his ass from breaking and getting full of sand which might lead to infection.

He just can't stay away, eh?

Mitakeumi has not been consistent within the same basho since his yusho basho.  He has been streaky.   Hope he keeps his win streak going and restart his Ozeki run.   He should get at least a double digit win to get the run started.

Enho seems to do better against lumbering giants than feisty little guys.   He goes against another lumbering rikishi today.

The yusho taker has come down to Kak, and Tochinoshin.   It may be decided way before the 15th day.

Great call by Konosuke on the Ryuden vs Kaisei match.

Shin is on a mission, but could make history as the first ozeki returnee to grab the yusho at the time.

Kak fulfilling his duties as long as he remains healthy. If things go well for him I think he might outlast the GOAT.

At first I thought this was a joke about Kakuryu busting a move on the tawara.

That's one of those predictions that I, for one, can't tell if you are being facetious or not.  Makes me want to check if there ever was a shinnyumaku wrestler who won a championship in his debut tournament.  Somehow, I doubt it – although Ichinojo did come close.  An Enho yusho would blow the sumo world up!  So let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Speaking of Ichinojo, he looks terrible compared to that debut tournament, and not just from a win-loss perspective. Watch his match with Hakuho from his debut tournament and see how after Hakuho throws him he rolls along and gets to his feet like a spring, and compare that to how he moves now.

Its frustrated me for a long time that Ichinojo is 1. Too heavy 2. Doesn't even fight in a way that makes use of his weight.

He gets pushed around by guys 200 lbs lighter than him on a regular basis, so drop the bloody weight and wrestle like a Mongolian!

He showed what he is capable of in the last basho with the same weight he has now.  I think his issue is either his back (oft injured), or in between his ears.  Perhaps, a gentle giant who has no business making a living on combative sport?

Well we will have to see how he does the next basho since he's not going to finish this one.

He’s a makuuchi staple and a fairly frequent visitor to sanyaku, so I think he’s doing just fine making a living from sumo!

Aminishiki. That man never quits.

I somehow wouldn't be surprised if he's still active this time next year, at the rate he's going.

Ichinojo is probably a yokozuna material if he has half of Shohozan's mean streak.

Sure, but I tend to think being a Yokozuna is above merely “making a living”. ;)
