Komatasukui? That’s not all that rare. Harumafuji won with it at least once last year.

I was pottering around the kitchen without my glasses on when that bout played and for a split second my pre-coffee brain mistook Arawashi for Harumafuji.

That Abi bout was interesting when you slow it down. At first I thought it was a henka but not at all. He is using his reach advantage effectively and thought quickly on his feet to finish the job.

I wonder how the fusenpai will impact Tochinoshin’s ozeki run - will they require 12 of him now? As in still wanting 11 actual wins plus the fusenpai...?

Edit: forgot to mention Chiyonokuni in dispatches. He held on to the end and it paid off. Really great bout from him yet again.

Abi’s movement was more inashi than henka I think. Just good evasive maneuvering. He didn’t avoid the tachiai, only kept Goeido at arms length and pushed back off him.

Technically speaking, it's a fusensho from his point of view.

Anyway, I still think 11 is the number.

If I remember his interview afterward correctly, he said something to the effect that he had a feeling right at tachi-ai that Goeido would come charging hard so in his mind his plan was to evade but in fact he ended up pulling down and it worked out.

You are of course right - morning brain yet to engage.

It’s not like Goeido to do that. ;)

Abi is having a good debut in the joi. 3-4 after a week in the sanyaku meat grinder is nothing to sniff at at all and tomorrow he gets to start working toward his KK against the hiramaku around and below him. We’ll see how he does though. It might actually be harder as I think he might face guys more familiar with his style. That said, even if he doesn’t KK, his first week performance should prevent a slip too far down the banzuke next time.

Why odd?
It was impressive!
I like this Abi much more than the other "3-letter-shikona-rikishi" (Ura) as he fights attractive and clean (unlike Ura, who is a Clown and can't fight proper)

Odd in the sense that Hakuho seemed to be without strategy and was quite lackluster with the tachi-ai.

Shohozan would use moro-zashi against Terunofuji, too, back when that was happening. He's a brawler, but he does employ strategy. Sometimes they even work.

Actually it's a fusensho for Tochinoshin, and a fusenpai for Endo.
Edit: Oh! Senkoho already pointed it out. Anyway, I am thrilled at him being on top and curious how he'll fare against his Sanyaku betters in the days to come.

Abi is using his long arms to good effect. He has an odd physique, in that his rump doesn't seem to be in proportion with his long arms and legs.

Sad about Endo -- but wise to step out if he would only aggravate his problem by staying in the competition.

Ichinojō is absolutely desperate to grab the belt. Terrible. Why isn’t he being patient? Props to Shōhōzan for winning that though.

Don’t like Hakuhō’s tachiai. Chiyotairyū even had both arms in for a moment. He should go back to slapping…

After beating Hakuhou yesterday, Abi phoned his mother. She started to cry, which made him cry. "I told her I will call her later since we weren't able to have a real conversation.." he said. He called her a few hours later and she was still crying.. Today during the interview after he beat Goueidou he was asked if he was going to call her again today. "I'll call my father.." he answered. "But what about your mother?" asked the tactful interviewer. "She'll be right there with him, I guess.." he answered.

Regarding Kotoshogiku's so-called resurgence, look at his schedule this basho so far.  By falling to the bottom of the joi, he hasn't faced anyone in the sanyaku yet.  Shodai is in a similar situation.

It has nothing to do with his opponents. He had been struggling against almost everyone lately but this basho the content is way better- maybe his physical condition is somewhat better. We'll see how he does against the top guys, when and if he faces them at M5.

He has not yet regained his go low/drive upward tachiai that made his bumpety-bump so effective.

But has learned to fall back on something else once it fails.

Roger that. Not long ago he looked he was about ready to get dragged behind the shed. At least he's doing something now.

Now I imagine that his father is crying too.

Next time he wins over someone big. I see him answering:

''I won't be calling my parents.''

Hakuho’s day 7 win over Chiyotairyu was classic sumo form and really a beautiful thing to watch. Check the overhead view on the replay as this really shows it. Hard to imagine anyone beating him when his technique and power are on the money like that

It seems Ichinojo decided to fold after incurring his 1st loss of the basho.   Since then, he looked like he wants to sit out the rest of the basho.   He was looking like an Ozeki contender for the last two basho or so.

Looks like we will have a new Ozeki after this basho and it is not Mitakeumi.

I was struck by that overhead view, too.  Hakuho grabbed the mawashi with his left hand and with his right pushed on Chiyotairu's chest, rotating him just enough so Chio was sideways to him, then rode him out.

Maybe I'm naive but I think his back is acting up again. I don't believe anyone can go from totally dominant to kitten in 24 hours without a physical reason. It's happened before. He will suddenly become awesome again, you'll see.

I have no doubt he has hurt it again. The way he walked back to his place after losing was exactly how someone with a bad back walks. I have two herniated discs and I walk exactly like that with that arch when I aggravate mine.

Tochinoshin vs Ichinojo is greatest bout we've seen this basho.

TRUE. POWER. SUMO.

Tochinoshin is beast and now sports 8-0 KK. Undefeated ever since his loss to Kakuryuu.

Tochinoshin...just wow. I hope he didn't injure himself - that required gargantuan effort.  He tied his mawashi wisely as well.  Ichinojo's lift seem, well, kind of a waste of energy.  He didn't use it all, whether to throw or to move forward.  I agree with others here that he seems to have back trouble again.

I really don't know where to start with Goeidou.  I'd wager that he will MK this basho.

Good sumo from the Geek.  He is clearly intent on sticking around.

Hakuhou once again has a wobble.  I really thought Yutakayama had him.  Some here have mentioned Hakuhou disrespecting his opponents the last few days by underestimating them.  I'm not persuaded there was disrespect today, but he clearly underestimated Yutakayama's strength and fighting spirit.  Hakuhou almost looks like he's in another place mentally or has a flu or something.  Is he well?  There's something off about him this basho.  It's weird.  I can't help feeling he perhaps came back to work too soon after his father's funeral.

In the realms of jonidan, Hoshoryu got his KK today with 4 consecutive wins, as did Naya.  Hoshoryu's last couple of outings brought to mind the words 'hot knife' and 'butter'.  But of course we'll see how he gets on as he moves up the field.  Tomorrow Naya (Jonidan 11) will step up to face Hidano (Sandanme 99), both of whom are 4-0.  I'd be interested to see how he gets on.
