Basho Talk Natsu 2018 (SPOILERS)

That Hakuho/Abi bout was odd.

it was odd, mostly because Hakuho totally disrespected Abi and paid for it. Not everybody is like a Kasei who shuts down when facing THE YOKOZUNA. Some people when they are nervous, like a Yoshikaze, just plow ahead and let their muscles take over. If it works, fine. If not who cares? Nobody expected him to win anyway. Hakuho has no experience with Abi. Hakuho is too experienced to not know you don't disrespect the unknown counting on your reputation alone to get you through. Hakuho did nothing at the tachai like he had all day or something then realized too late Abi is a kid who has more energy then a bunny. He deserved to lose that and Abi did exactly what he was supposed to do and was rewarded. Good all around as far as I'm concerned.

And Monty is right,  Ichinojo was all belt after losing to Endo with a failed throw.  Tamawashi gave him no shot at his mawashi and drove him out. Again, well deserved.

The rapid change of form of wrestlers is still one thing that surprises me about Sumo. Earlier this year Takakeisho looked like the next big thing, beating yokozunas and looking real good, and now he seems headed more toward juryo than sanyako. And he doesn't seem to be injured or anything, at least that I know of, just plain bad form.

Terutsuyoshi vs Takanoiwa

IMO Takanoiwa was robbed. To me Terutsuyoshi 's heel is down first. At worst it's a redo.

Is Ishiura a forum's member? Seems like the litle man  readed this topic...

Wow...i dont wanna be in Chiyotaryu's skin tomorrow. The Hak will print a tegata in his cheek!

What a Shame...Tochi is being brilliant This basho but that hand...

As has already been pointed out, they are only bolted down in the Kyūshū basho.

Yes, I read that. My comment was aimed at highlighting the difference in crowd response to the kinboshi upsets by Shohozan and Abi on consecutive days

Haha. That came to my mind too. He’s clearly been told I was criticizing his one-dimensionality. Mind you, he still did a HNH or attempted a henka that was just a bit too slow. :)

It also makes a difference that it was the last match. When Kakuryu lost in the 2nd-to-last match some people may have been reluctant to get rid of their cushion.

I was going to say after day 5 that Endo was the irresistible force to Ichinojo as the immovable object, but after day 6, I think Ichi's back trouble must have returned, as he can't seem to move himself.

Regarding Kotoshogiku's so-called resurgence, look at his schedule this basho so far.  By falling to the bottom of the joi, he hasn't faced anyone in the sanyaku yet.  Shodai is in a similar situation.

I'm glad Aminishiki can take a fall. Seems like he's been thrown around like a rag doll this basho.

That’s a good point. Could one ever expect any kind of rebuke from an usher for throwing ones cushion if a magaeshira beats a Yokozuna, do you think?

They may have wanted to save their cushions for what would have been a more impressive kinboshi had Kaisei beaten Hakuho. Kakuryu often gives them up.

I think it is all the injuries due to bouts & practices.

That and the initial unfamiliarity with a new rikishi wears off. Takakeisho was an unknown quantity a year ago but everyone has had a chance to study him now.

The first day of this basho was meh, but thankfully it's been picking up from there. Hakuho just had no answer for Abi, and to see this bright young kid beaming just put a smile on my face. Tochinoshin with the free win over Endo moves ever closer to ozeki promotion, we'll have to see how he goes from there.

I think Hak took a day off.   Abi went at him without any respect and got Hak before he could take Abi seriously.   Abi vs Hak the second round will be different.  Hak will be ready and blow him off the mat.

The bigger question is, can Hak or Kak tame Ozekibound Tochinoshin?

Kotoshogiku has been mixing up his tactics in this basho instead of just going bumpity bumpity.   That to me is a sign of hope that he may extend his sumo career for a few more years at the top division.    Shodai looks to be a bit more determined & stronger in this basho.   Will see how they do the rest of the basho.

BTW, I no longer see Shodai as a future Ozeki.   His head high tachihai won't get him there.

Suddenly, with Takanohana and Furiwake (ex-Takamisakari) and 6 others joining the judging department, the shinpan (Men in Black) are becoming sexy. Suddenly, when the shinpan are announced laconically as they have been for many years, the audience cheers. Something that has never happened before. "We have some very popular ex-rikishi on the roster, and the crowd seems to be pleased, showing their feelings by clapping and oooing...." said Hakkaku Oyakata, who seems to be quite pleased himself. The judging roster now includes yusho winners like Takanohana, Tamanoi(ex-Tochiazuma), Nishikigi (ex-Mitoizumi), Tomozuna (ex-Kyokutenhou), ex-KaioU, ex- Chiyotaikai, ex-Dejima, among others.and other popular guys like ex-Musouyama, ex-Miyabiyama and ex-Wakanosato.

To be precise, it is Takanohana the audience is cheering for, loudly, along with any association to him.

Suddenly, Takanoiwa is also a massive crowd favorite, as well as Takakeisho (far more than I can ever recall them being previously), along with their stablemates, all of who now receive rousing ovations any time "Takanohana-beya" is announced in the arena.

It goes beyond the ovations. When Takanohana takes his spot for shinpan duties, cameras flash throughout the venue as the audience goes into a frenzy to get a photo of the embattled oyakata.

Yago seems determined to win the Juryo Yusho.

Completely different attitude than on the last basho.

Agreed.  I had found him overhyped in his first few basho at juryo level, but he's found his mojo this time around and it really going for it.

Arawashi wins against our grandpa Aminishiki via Komatasukui.

I don't believe I've seen that performed in Makuuchi while I've been watching (since 2001). Maybe my memory is bad.

Well...everything was bad then...video quality...

Edit: Yes, memory was bad. I can vaguely remember Harumafuji using it at least once.

Komatasukui? That’s not all that rare. Harumafuji won with it at least once last year.

Sorry, I replied before I got as far as your edit. Not unlike me to be hasty! (Yeah, right)
