Philioyamfugi 378 Posted May 17, 2018 Really the best sumo so far. . So many great matches. Endou was cliniclal staying in ichinojo's chest then slipping in the front grip. Ikioi, Kotoshugiku was chest to chest...both matches and others move forward or lose sumo. Race heating up.

His hand just slides over Tamawashi's head pushing his hair in the process. Very good match between Endo-Ichinojo but lack of patience cost him again.
Morty 1,495 Posted May 17, 2018 There was an old lady in the crowd during the Endo-Ichinojo match who was just going mental and she really lost it when Endo won. The crowd was really into it today. And that match is a good illustration of what I said about Endo having great balance. Most others go over from that attempted throw by Ichinojo

I didn't see any "grabbing" of Tamawashi's hair, although Mitakeumi's hand did push down on the top of Tamawashi's head. That helped throw Tamawashi off balance and out of the ring. The kimarite was hikiotoshi. What are the grounds for calling it hatakikomi?

Clearly they were there primarily to see Endo fight. And yes, you are absolutely right about Endo's balance.
Dwale 419 Posted May 17, 2018 Woooow. There is nothing I can say that would do justice to our more exciting matches today, so I'll just let it suffice to say we had some epic bouts. Can't wait to rewatch!

Most others go over from that attempted throw by Ichinojo I'd say the match the day before against Abi would say different. Someone with great balance isn't getting pushed out with 1 arm by Abi. As for this match Endo showed tremendous strength resisting the push down. Great balance isn't required when the guy is trying to push you down through his own belly. Bad technique by Ichinojo IMO . A lack of patience made him try something he wasn't in position to accomplish. What he tried is something like Hakuho does easily but Hakuho moves away at the same time as pushing to give the guy room to go down. Ichinojo moved into Endo making it much easier for him to stay up. I'm not sure Ichinojo will ever be a good thrower but he has been mixing it in more as of late. It costs him as much as it helps in my opinion. But it's good not to be too predictable I guess. I think Endo's strength shocked Ichinojo a bit when Endo got him so quickly to the edge to start. Once back in the middle Ichinojo should have settled down and wore Endo out. Instead he went for the quick win.

Now that I see your photos, I will admit that you have the correct ID. On Day 5, those "fans" were wearing identical pink tops with the letter "P" on them, just as in the photo. One was wearing a pink hat, and the other not, just as in the photo. Furthermore, they were clapping fervorously during Endo's bout. dingo 1,263 Posted May 17, 2018 Ikioi's leg seems to be utterly useless - he can barely walk. Yet somehow he pulls off sumo like today. That's seriously impressive.
d_golem 213 Posted May 18, 2018 (edited) What's more impressive than Endo's balance is his sheer strength of his left hand grip on Ichinojo's mawashi during the attempted push/throw down. That steadfast grip enabled him to use it as a pivot to resist Ichinojo. Imagine a 200+ kg guy trying to topple you down by gripping your belt from behind while simultaneously pushing your head down with his other hand, and all you have is your left hand holding onto the lower half of his slippery silk belt. Gripping stuff! Edited May 18, 2018 by d_golem

I used to quite like him, but recently he’s been two one-dimensional for my tastes. I don’t apologize for that. I was thinking more about some of more extreme comments I've seen on-stream about him, and had actually been searching my head for a way to express what I had in mind better than I did. No, I did not mean to imply that you hated him, and I apologize for coming across that way.
robnplunder 975 Posted May 18, 2018 It seems Kotoshogiku is trying other ways to win rather than the chest bumps forward. I like it. I think he will pick up a few more wins by varying his method. There have been other great matches in addition to Endo and Ichinojo. Shodai had a few spirited wins. So did Mitakeumi. After the last basho, this one is turning out to be an exciting one, at least for me.

Kintamayama 45,109 Posted May 18, 2018 The YDC were there in full force yesterday. So what does Hakuhou do? Yes, he goes for the slap and grab. "I guess his power has declined. He doesn't have the composure to do Yokozuna-like 'receiving' sumo. That is the truth.." said chairman Kitamura. 1
yutarotanaka 104 Posted May 18, 2018 (edited) Is the slap and grab/forearm blast at the tachi-ai considered a cheap move unworthy or beneath the rank of Yokozuna like henkas? Edited May 18, 2018 by yutarotanaka
Kintamayama 45,109 Posted May 18, 2018 (edited) Suddenly, with Takanohana and Furiwake (ex-Takamisakari) and 6 others joining the judging department, the shinpan (Men in Black) are becoming sexy. Suddenly, when the shinpan are announced laconically as they have been for many years, the audience cheers. Something that has never happened before. "We have some very popular ex-rikishi on the roster, and the crowd seems to be pleased, showing their feelings by clapping and oooing...." said Hakkaku Oyakata, who seems to be quite pleased himself. The judging roster now includes yusho winners like Takanohana, Tamanoi(ex-Tochiazuma), Nishikigi (ex-Mitoizumi), Tomozuna (ex-Kyokutenhou), ex-KaioU, ex- Chiyotaikai, ex-Dejima, among others.and other popular guys like ex-Musouyama, ex-Miyabiyama and ex-Wakanosato. The "slap and grab" and the "forearm in your face" are not considered the same. The slap has been given the green light a few days ago by Ounomatsu chief judge, who specifically warned against the use of the fore-arm/elbow. YDC chairman Col. Sanders, OTOH, does not think the slap and grab is befitting of a Yokozuna.

d_golem 213 Posted May 18, 2018 Watching day 6's opening Makuuchi bout made me quite sad... I remember when I started watching ozumo about two years ago both combatants were sanyaku mainstays and were at the peak of their powers. Such a rough sport...
