Basho Talk - Haru Basho 2016 +++ Spoiler Alert! +++

Recommended Posts

Alright, guys, if you watch the slow-mo replay of Kisenosato vs. Kotoshogiku, that's not really a henka he does there. Watch it again, they do collide.

Yeah, it's more of a "Harumafuji special", I thought it was quite obvious from the start so I don't know where the henka talk comes from.

Mhm. Feels like we need a word for that...

Koto beat himself. He would have fallen if Kisenosato would have stupidly sat there. Kisenosato would have been the only thing holding him up.

I vote for "hanka", from han=half. Half a henka.

And I know Tochiozan got an elbow in the face, but he couldn't get out of there fast enough. Hak is in a very, very bad mood. It will be interesting to see how he goes tomorrow against someone who can match him physically in Teronofuji. I know he is injured but I can't see him putting up with getting slapped around like that.

New theory: Hak's treatment of the meat-grinder fodder this week has had nothing to do with them, and everything to do with sending a message to the Ozeki and Yoks that he isn't done yet, and when they face him they better be ready. Especially Kise.

He wants to let everyone know that he is the BOSS......

Kisenosato wasn't looking for full contact. Call it whatever ya want...

Goeido, man...he's got it in him to get crushing victories like that, but other times he gets blown out of the ring like he was made of tissue paper. That said, he's looking sharp this time around. Dare I let myself believe he's turned the corner? Just going to have to wait and see.

As for Osunaarashi, heh. That was basically the sumo equivalent of someone with a spider in their shirt running around like, "Get it off me, get it off me!" I never like to see my guy lose, but at least that one was amusing.

Dang, that was a good opportunity for Osu to open up a two win lead but Chiyoshoma came out strong. Osu has been giving up space to create his own offensive opportunities but even at this level still has to be wary of not moving back too much.

It was sadly the old Kotoshogiku at exactly the wrong time. As mentioned, he has improved on his blind rushes but just lost his form against Kisenosato. It's not over for him yet, but he needs some luck to get there now.

Will it again get to the point where the crux match is Hakuho vs Kisenosato?

He's been summoned before. And methinks he'll be summoned and spoken to over this.

He won't! Hakuho certainly doesn't look to be in the best of moods but that push on Yoshikaze was just part of the fight. Of course we can see easily on replays and gifs and the like that Hakuho is a monster because Yoshikaze's foot was out, but the man himself was just making an instinctive and split-second move to finish a bout against a very slippery customer.

Please I like Hakuhō (or maybe liked) and theres no way to excuse what he did to Yoshikaze. Even today, Im not sure if Tochiōzan lost because of the kachiage or because he was afraid hed be killed if he didnt walk out on his own.

Kisenosato henka!!! Damn, he really wants the yūshō!!

That match should happen the day after tomorrow (Day 11)

Hakuho was called today to the shimpan department to get cautioned by department top Isegahama for the extra shove that caused the left femoral neck fracture of head shimpan Izutsu (3 months for recovery). http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1619906.html
And for all the other extra shoves as well. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1619936.html

Hakkaku had declared yesterday that he doesn't think it was an extra shove and confirmed that today.

I am happy they actually rebuke him, I thought they were going to let it slide.

Yeah bull, he knows what he is doing. He's been exceptionally rough all tournament. If he truly didn't know what he was doing, he would have been continuously doing these things for years and he wasn't.

Sometimes it's also been called a non-henka, so there you have it...

About Hakuho's recent tantrums:

Let's not forget that he has behind him 3 million Mongolians at the most.

And they encourage showing of strength and feirceness on the clay. To display dominance in anyway.Asashoryu was their ideal rhikishi. Most would probably not even second thought Hakuho's actions. And Hakuho knows that. It isn't as if Hakuho constantly feels pressure from the public to behave.

He has started doing it more often in recent years, although not to the extent of this basho. But he's always the one doing it; I can't recall anyone else as having made a clear late-hit, while I have the recollection of plenty from Hakuho.

Sato looked very confident in beating Ura, even taking time to wipe his own nose during the match.

Great stuff. I'll be very surprised if either of the two fails to be a Makuuchi mainstay.

this is the same kotoshogiku. he's always been bull rushing in, it's just that his opponents are taking him head on.

If anyone would pull a henka, kotoshogiku would end up in the 3rd row of the audience from how much he's charging forward.

Funny scene in the audience, just seconds after Ura hit the clay.

Watch the guy holding the white Ura 宇良 banner (top left behind the gyoji) from 1:52 min :-)

Kisenosato vs. Goeido, as the 5th and 6th sanyaku, are presumably meeting on Day 15 in the first soroibumi bout. I originally thought it might be Kisenosato giving Goeido another makekoshi on senshuraku. Instead, it might be the Yusho-deciding match. Go Go Go GOeido!
