That's ... quite a system.

Sadly, it's probably just the logical extension of how it has always worked. I've read stories before of oyakata being 'pursuaded' monetarily to retire a bit early (i.e. before 65 then). The interesting part here is indeed that the 5 extra years appear to be treated as a full-on entitlement now.

Ex-Shōtenrō has switched from the Kitajin kabu owned by Endō to the Nishikijima kabu left vacant by ex-Asashio after the Asanoyama scandal. Unless Endō is more seriously injured than we know, I doubt it's a omen of Endō's imminent retirement, and more Shōtenrō securing his long-term future with the NSK.

After Shōhōzan's retirement, the next kabu crunch is likely going to be in Ōshima-beya, with Kaisei and Kyokutaisei. Based on his lack of form and age, Takarafuji may also be nearing the end of the line. The chances are probably quite high we will see Kitajin as a loaner again for a while rather than Endō taking it up immediately.

The other hot seat which just had the temperature turned up a few degrees would presumably be that of ex-Kotoyuki, who is now the only loanee borrowing from an active rikishi. I know the retired/deceased loans have expiration dates on them, but ex-Kotoyuki has a myoseki belonging to someone turning 37 in a few weeks. I wonder whether he's actually the next borrower of Kitajin.

I know we've often talked of Nishikijima in connection with ex-Toyonoshima (who obviously has his own complicated issues in trying to secure a long term stock), but it appears this switch in concert with the sanyo-for-all policy and the upcoming Isegahama ichimon logjam has really tightened things up.

Technically so is Chiyootori, but we still don't know who is the ultimate owner of Sanoyama.

Daishomaru's seven-year sekitori stint has just come to an end, I wonder if he's going to give it one go at getting his salary back or retire if it isn't happening. As a stablemate of the owner, he would likely have first refusal of Kitajin.

Since it hasn't been mentioned, Shotenro's assumption of Nishikijima is still temporary (i.e, he's not the owner) according to the placements on the Kyokai lists.

Even with Shotenro still a borrower, it honestly wouldn't surprise me to see the Dewanoumi group gobble up the Nishikijima share eventually.

At this point just organize everything under Dewanoumi ichimon then divide the kabu up among various new nimons

At this rate sanyaku is going to be mandatory to get the kabu, and like with Shohozan's case it's not even guaranteed

Here we go!

In other Miyagino-related news (on that link on previous tweet), is this means they’re recruiting a Ms15TD rikishi?

Yes, that was the second item on that link.  Probably, most likely he's staying especially given what we know of sanyo nowadays.

Hmm? All we can know from that statement is that he's not retiring from the Kyokai today, which is entirely unsurprising since his 65th birthday isn't for another month.

Fair, I read too much into it, although all things considered it's exceedingly likely. He'd said something to that effect last basho on broadcast, sanyo seems to be pretty much automatic for non-controversial oyakata nowadays (not that it should be), and the powers that be are probably happy to have someone to keep Hakuhō in check.

To be clear, my issue wasn't with reading between the lines, but rather with the "[sanyo] was the second item" start to your response, since that's literally not true. A heya succession announcement 10 years ago would have looked exactly the same.

Yeah, I did notice much later that sanyō wasn't actually written anywhere in the thing once I'd finished translating it. Ah well, bit lazy to edit it now, might as well leave my sloppiness up for posterity with a strikethrough :-P

Some Kyokai site observations, only the first one is relevant to this thread but anyway:

Takashima-oyakata (former Sekiwake Koboyama) has moved from Miyagino-beya to Isenoumi-beya. He turns 65 in a few days, will he stay on as sanyo or is Nishikigi now in the frame to acquire his myoseki?

Makuuchi gyoji Shikimori Kandayu has moved from Miyagino-beya to Asahiyama-beya. He and Asahiyama-oyakata (former Sekiwake Kotonishiki) are the same age and joined ozumo one basho apart, so they've come through the ranks together, so to speak.

Neither man originated with Miyagino-beya; Takashima was there for six years, Kandayu for five. If memory serves, both can now claim a 7th heya affiliation.

Elsewhere:

Hakkaku-beya's Jonokuchi yobidashi Yuma has quit after two-and-a-half years in the job, and Futagoyama-beya's 5th-class tokoyama Tokomiyabi has quit after just over a year.

Lastly, the Kyokai has started adding photos to the profile pages of lower division rikishi, for example here is Tenichi. Still plenty more to come, they seem to be doing it one heya at a time.

Takashima does indeed stay on as sanyo.

Is it just me or is this extremely odd? Not that there haven't been a number of odd movements of various kabu across traditional ichimon lines in recent years, but with Kagamiyama reaching mandatory retirement age in 6 months, and the heya not really having anyone beyond Nishikigi waiting to assume a name, it's hard to understand the point of this.

I know that Takashima is not a Miyagino lifer and was attached to a pair of heya which found their way into the Tokitsukaze ecosystem, but there doesn't appear to be any connection between him and Isenoumi-beya. It also doesn't appear that he's from the same part of the country as any of the other oyakata there. Additionally, Isenoumi-oyakata has to be one of the most well-supported shisho in the game in terms of the volume of support staff that he has (with only Tatekawa even being eligible to branch out, which seems unlikely).

It does beg the question why, if he wasn't going to stay with Hakuho, Takashima didn't transfer to one of the stables in the ichimon that might have benefitted from another coach, or even Oitekaze beya which has no supporting coaches (although since he only spent 2 months with Oitekaze-oyakata before his move to Miyagino, maybe that's just not a match).

Given the recent speculation in another thread on here about what it might take Hakuho (or Terunofuji) to re-establish the Isegahama ichimon as a more political force, and also the much discussed crunch of presumably needed names, moving Takashima into a heya where there doesn't - from an external perspective - appear to be a logical need seems really very bizarre, especially now that he has extended his employment. I wonder if the heya is just closer to his house, or if the kyokai just goofed and reported it as Isenoumi when they meant Isegahama (similar characters)?

Quick question, did Kyokushuho said anything about his plans after he retired? He is retired for months and didn't announce a plan to buy a kabu, but today on a Asakayama instagram post he was sitting alongside the oyakata instructing rikishi.

No way to get a kabu after retirement - if he has none at that point, he has to leave the NSK for good. Some ex-rikishi get the chance to be employed by a heya as manager or trainer, maybe Asakayama-beya was in need for one.

Edit: except for y/o, who can stay without one for a while

Maybe Oshima oyakata employed him and sent him to the degeiko in his stead.
