Kotoshogiku does already own a kabu. It's being borrowed by ex-Hidenoyama.

How does that work? When Kotoshogiku retires and decides he wants it, does Tenkaiho lose his position?

You're missing several who are on the edge of eligibility by sekitori basho (which I think is 25; if it's 30, you're only missing 2) ...

I haven't been watching nearly as long as you have so I figured I would miss a few. I was looking for an thread discussing rikishi who used to be in makuuchi but dropped down the banzuke, but I can't find it anymore! Also, I think somewhere in this thread, it says the cut-off is 28 basho.

There are also a few other rikishi (Daieisho, Chiyonokuni, maybe a few more?) who are in the top division (or have been there recently) that will probably meet eligibility requirements pretty soon.

The database ("Sumo Reference" link on the forum's main page) has a list of kabu listing current occupants and owners.

I found that after looking through this thread, it's really interesting and useful!

Yes he would lose his position, so it's up to Tenkaiho to find another kabu to borrow or preferably to own when that time comes.

FYI, Kyokutenho, born NYAMJAV Tsevegnyam in Nalaikh suburb of Ulaanbaator, changed his name to Ota Masaru in 2005 (now head of Tomozuna Beya).

Way off topic, but I can't pass any opportunity for some lengthy Google Maps scrolling around session.

So one question for those who know their way around Mongolian affairs arose:

Why the hell are so many roofs of buildings in Mongolia blue?! (particularly obvious in Ulan-bator)

Former Maegashira Shotenro has switched from the Kasugayama myoseki (owned by Ikioi) to the Kitajin myoseki (owned by Endo), it was announced earlier.

Is that a hint about Ikioi's near future, or is there some other reason for switching?

That pretty much looks like intai is approaching fast for Ikioi

AFAIK, Ikioi is safe to remain in juryo on the banzuke next honbasho. But, there may be a lingering injury or issue that has him concerned that he may not be able to keep from dropping to makushita for Kyushu.

My thoughts exactly.

Ikioi is bound to be either J13 or J14, if I'm not mistaken? There isn't much leeway for him.

Former Maegashira Sadanofuji has switched from the Nakamura myoseki (owned by Yoshikaze) and is now borrowing the Yamashina myoseki, ostensibly still owned by ex-Onishiki since his mandatory retirement a year ago.

And again, we might have the painting on the wall...

Arguably a big upgrade, at least assuming the share isn't already spoken for some other Dewanoumi-ichimon rikishi on a (future) permanent basis. Akiseyama, Fujiazuma, Sagatsukasa and Toyohibiki would be the nominal candidates for that, but all of them are old enough and have been struggling enough that you'd think they would be taking the share for themselves right here and now if they were the new owner, not loan it out.

The lowest-ranked eligible rikishi from the Dewanoumi group who are actually still sekitori at the moment are Hidenoumi and Tokushoryu, also not really guys who strike me as major candidates for future kabu ownership, whether Yamashina or another.

(Off the wall guess for who might end up being Yamashina eventually: ex-Bushuyama, currently still Kiyomigata on loan from also rapidly deteriorating Tochiozan. No reliable basis for that guess though outside of his heya boss Fujishima/ex-Musoyama's budding power position within the group.)

Speaking of shares held by retired oyakata:

Only one scheduled oyakata retirement this year, via ex-Tamanofuji becoming the first to reach the extended age 70 limit.

A bit earlier in fact - the Kyokai announced that he retired on April 25th, some seven months ahead of reaching that extended retirement age.

Maybe he reached an early deal with someone for his Tateyama myoseki, which is now vacant.

This looks more and more puzzling the closer we get to ex-Tamanofuji's originally expected retirement date with nobody actually taking over the kabu.

I wonder if it was just health-related or for other personal reasons.

And one late reply/casual speculation while I'm at it:

On 09/07/2019 at 21:18, mt fuji said:

Is it assumed that most elders stick around until they're forced to retire at 70 (or pass away earlier, I guess)? Which means the only open kabu for 2019 is Tateyama, and there won't be any more available until the four in 2021 (two on the same day!)?

I wouldn't be surprised if Arashio/ex-Oyutaka goes at age 65 next year. He won't be able to continue running the stable and I'm not aware that he ever had a meaningful position in Kyokai management or within his ichimon's power structure, so I'm not sure what kind of consultancy role he could fill in useful fashion for five years.

And for all that's just and right I really hope they don't give the extension to Takasago either, but him being an ex-ozeki and ex-director I suppose the likelihood of that happening is low, even if he seems an even more likely case of somebody who'd end up collecting five years worth of paychecks for doing little to nothing.

Takekuma Oyakata has retired from his second tier membership at the age of 67. I hope he is well.

For the record, Yoshikaze is now Nakamura Oyakata. I wonder if he or Takekaze are in line to take over Oguruma as he only has three years until retirement.

In the Oyakata Gallery page, it's stated that you either need to be Y/O, have 25 basho in san'yaku or 60 in makuuchi to become a shisho. Is that true, and if so, how did people like Miyagino and Ootake come to be shisho?

Those rules only apply to branching out and opening a new heya, not taking over an existing one. They introduced it after ex-Hamanishima left Mihogaseki beya  to establish Onoe and took several high ranking rikishi such as Baruto with him, against Mihogaseki’s wishes.

Seems like Homarefuji (10 makuuchi + 28juryo basho) will be Tateyama now

Hmm... He's now been moved up ahead of the borrowers, as we saw previously with Asasekiryu/Nishikijima.

Interesting. Helps to be in a stable run by one of the Kyokai's few remaining yokozuna, perhaps. Good for him if he's getting in for the long haul. :-)

(But I'm curious if anyone would have had him in their top 10 for likely future owners of the Tateyama share half a year ago...)

Another kabu moving across ichimon lines? It is interesting the politics involved in getting one. I'm somewhat surprised that Goeido hasn't got a kabu yet.

Yamashina (ex-Onishiki) would seem an obvious in-ichimon one to pick up. He would have a three year grace period to find one anyway as an ozeki.
