Kishinoyama 625 Posted October 1 I guess Shimanoumi just missed out as well and will be at Ms1w with that 2-5 record.

yohcun 408 Posted October 1 Is it just my lame pronunciation skills, or is "Fujiryouga" especially tough to say? Fujirou-... F-Fujiryou... ga... Goshima.

Akiseyama might still be searching for a job outside of Sumo (or a different kabu, who knows). Endo's demotion and ongoing injury problems surely don't make things easier, since his share is out on loan, too.

I find I'm fine with 'kyo' and 'ryu', but my 'ryo' always wants to sound like a place in Brazil, so I cheat. Juryo is jur-yo and this new sekitori is Fujir-yoga. .

rokudenashi 343 Posted October 1 A cursory glance through the DB suggests using the ancient ひむか reading for 日向 might be a first, as there are plenty of shikona with Hyūga, Hiuga and Hinata in them, but no Himuka. Nor are there any with the alternative spelling 譬武伽, for completeness’ sake.

Certainly at any lower rank 4-3 is good enough to move up 3 spots on the banzuke. Rankings at the top of Ms are a weird transition area between the rest of Ms and Juryo. We've been operating under a hypothesis proposed by Asashosakari that in recent years, they simply make the promotion zone computed movement the difference between W and L, just as in Juryo. So 4-3 at Ms2e computes to Ms1e, as does 7-8 at J14e. It looked like the tie might go to the promotion candidate, but that was based on just one example IIRC, but after Natsu they kept Miyanokaze (6-9 at J13e) over promoting Kyokukaiyu (5-2 at Ms5e), who both computed to Ms2e. Yubinhaad 11,968 Posted October 1 FWIW the first two kanji of Himukamaru are taken from Hyuga Province (日向国), the old name for what is now Miyazaki prefecture. Where the reading comes from, I have no idea.

Akinomaki 41,815 Posted October 2 (edited) Fujiryoga has to live up to his new shikona now, Fujishima's superior one to others. With the hope to have him get even a bit higher, Fujishima had thought of this shikona for him, since Goshima entered: "No tactics, going through with head-on fights, that's the rikishi I want to raise him into." The -ryoga 凌駕 part is made of old characters, 凌 shinogu is survive and surpass, appearing in the Nara period poetry collection Manyoshu, the ga can also be shinogu and appears in the Sankaiki 山槐記 diary of Nakayama Tadachika from the Heian period, a taste of ancient times. Fujiryoga wants to become a rikishi with stirring oshi-zumo, who gives vigour to those around him and watch. "Don't take the mawashi, not getting the mawashi taken, that's the sumo I want to take on." "To tell my desire, I want to rise to makuuchi, when I gradually climb up the banzuke." o http://www.sanspo.com/article/20251001-U3BQIY5CWZL25LTVI6SYJSHVUE/ Edited October 2 by Akinomaki 1
