Ura saved his best for day 15. (Applauding...) I hope this is indicative of what is to come now.

I didn't believe he could still pull that move off.  That was very fun.

Terunofuji, even injured, exudes an aura few have had. Omedeto champ.

He was kyujo, so he returned to start the promotion process - NHK reported he was already back for torikumi making in the last week

Kotonowaka couldn't hide his disappointment in his Sansho interview. Said he still lacks sufficient strength to win, and will get back at it from tomorrow for next basho.

I like Shishi, but with how awful his technique is it's quite the feat for him to being doing as well in juryo as he has. So so so raw.

Reminds you of a sandstorm?

Congratulations to Kotonowaka for the promotion. I didn't even consider him to be "the next", but now here he is and we have to deal with him.

Same, I will miss him. One of my favourite rikishi of the last ten years.

I felt a pang of pain after Takarafuji's loss today. The way he fell and how he took a moment to stand up, felt like a farewell to Makuuchi to me. I will miss him.

His sumo isn't flashy, true, but at some point longevity compels respect. Something of the "James Bond meets Q in Skyfall" vibe about it.

Isegahama seems to be able to produce waves of sekitori,

1st wave: Asofuji, Aminishiki (mainstay), Harumafuji (peak)

2nd wave: Takarafuji (mainstay), Terunofuji (peak, import), Homarefuji, Terutsuyoshi

3rd wave: Midorifuji, Nishikifuji, Atamifuji, Takerufuji,

will be interesting to see how the 3rd wave develops

Wouldn't have expected this sentiment about Kotonowaka from you. All he's done since he's arrived on the scene is perform while improving steadily, with only an early knee injury slowing him down.

As for Atamifuji, I don't think anyone's expecting him to be the next dominant Japanese rikishi right away, if at all (that's what Onosato is here for), but at least in Japan, he's popular here for his boyish disposition (he's still only 21), and he's achieving exceptional results despite the fact that, according to his shisho, "the kid still doesn't even know how to do sumo yet."

If you showed me Mitakeumi's bouts without me knowing anything about his history, my first thought would be "he's one of those guys with chronic back pain that comes and goes making every day an A/B lottery".

That was me exactly, as well.

This makes me wonder what Isegahama would say about Hokuseiho if he were his shisho.

It is a long term vision/development plan?

he may want Atamifuji to develop into a Terunofuji/Kisenosato-style solid rikishi given his body, height and weight. Yet, Atamifuji starts peddling backwards, tawara dancing when plan A fails.

Congratulations to Terunofuji on yusho no. 9 and another year of sick leave. He's earned it...

Bigger congratulations to former sekiwake Kotonowaka/new ozeki Kotozakura.
He dispelled any doubts I had about him. Definitely not a choker, and no shame in a play-off loss to Kaiju.

Strikes me that these 3 ozeki are going to make it very hard for each other to take the next step.

No commiserations for Kirishima - he needs to keep his week 1s clean to give himself a chance.

Ura saved his best for senshuraku, didn't he? I just wish he hadn't mentally talked himself out of a KK before the basho even began.
I honestly believe he's got the chops to KK at komusubi if he can get his head in the right place.

Well-rounded is Hakuōhō; those two struck me as chaotic. Ōhō still has no clear game plan, but I'll accept Kotonowaka is getting there.

Well-rounded Is Takakeisho, just as wide as he is tall

Damn, that was a great senshuraku of a great basho. Very exciting. Takanosho hanging on one toe -- wtf is that, tsutaezori!! -- kiss the dohyo, Monkey -- potato-sack dumping of a yokozuna hopeful -- and all bow before Kaiju.

Wow.

Tremendous last day, as good as day 14. Terunofuji was imperious, twice.

I'm also not too concerned about Teru's loss. Losing to joi/lower sanyaku early on is very much in line with past performances where he's gone on to double digit/jun-yusho/yusho.

Wakamotoharu is coming off a multi-basho sanyaku run where he had a shot at ozeki. It's not as though he's losing to a slouch/also-ran

Lots of days left.

Hats off to Terunofuji, he showed everyone that there are levels to this and that he's still a step above everyone else. Only one more to go to become a Dai-Yokozuna.

Overall, a very exciting, competitive tournament with great storylines. I hope it sets the tone for a great 2024.

Congratulations Terunofuji on yusho number nine! You are one of my favorite rikishi and I have been following you since you were Wakamisho but please retire. You have nothing left to prove and your knees and back need some rest. Your diabetes should also be easier to control. Their is now going to be a fourth ozeki so let them battle it out with some other newcomers to see who will be the next Yokozuna. I say this knowing that you won’t retire. But it would be nice to see you go out on top instead of being a part time Yokozuna.

Edit: Of course I forgot that his goal is 10 yusho.  Retirement for now is out of the question….
