Hatsu 2024 discussion (results)

Recommended Posts

Looks like a sure sell-out later this month: the weekends already sold-out and all other days with only few tickets left https://sumo.pia.jp/vacant/va01.jsp

Tickets can be bought on the net at sumo.pia and also standard pia, or directly at 7/11 stores, the main place to get your ticket regardless how you bought it. Order by phone is possible, but likely there still will be no sale at the kokugikan ticket booth https://sumo.pia.jp/sumo01.jsp - and no tickets for the day: they are D seats now

New were tickets with Asahi beer attached, 1 each at a four person masu seat - sold out https://www.sumo.or.jp/Admission/ticket/Jan/deals/621/#beer

The special masu B for 2 persons are not on sale any more, the masu C for 2 in the last row still were. Quite new were senior/child combined 5 and 6 person masu at reduced prices: a child or a person at least 60 years old in the group gave a reduction of 4000/4500 Yen per person for a B masu seat box, 4500 Yen on weekends. A similar reduction for the upper floor seats now: groups of 4 with a child or senior pay 14 000 Yen for their B seats instead of 20/22 000Yen for 4 individual tickets. https://sumo.pia.jp/seat01.jsp

The chaya have tickets on sale on the net as well https://www.kokugikan-s.jp/SHOP/120325/list.html - with a few top class seats already sold out at the main sites: tickets like these count as sold for the NSK, same for all other ticket sale agencies etc. who ordered a bunch of tickets.

The poster has the focus on the 2 new top ranks in their profession and a reminder that there still is a yokozuna on the banzuke

Last year's poster was much more interesting! Does anyone know a website where previous tournament posters can be viewed?

Also, does anyone know the best place to buy sumo tickets from re-sellers? Looking for a ticket for the last day of the tournament and missed the official sale. Japanese ebay perhaps?

I hope so!

That's very sweet, but without quotes, the poster shows Terunofuji's back.

English, eh?

I like the poster, it's pretty cool to put some focus on the other sumo professions besides rikishi as well. They get most of the spotlight anyway.

That is a nice thought.  OTOH, the cynics (not me!(Sigh...)) might say the story is not "see the pre-intai Yokozuna perform (maybe)" or "please don't notice our only Japanese Y/O is the Erratic Hamster", but "come for the Sumo -- stay for the Edo-period fashion."

The Hatsu basho poster is available for print at 7/11 convenience stores https://www.sej.co.jp/products/bromide/subromide2111.html

A3 size at the store's multi-copy machine for 200 yen - item SUMOH043 - the other 42 of the last 2 years are also still available, posters from Aki 2021 on in several varieties and a few other items. The Hatsu basho has only one poster variety.

Wow, would love to get one. Too bad the nearest Japanese 7/11 is thousands of km away...

They seem to have past basho posters available, so let's hope the sale of posters sticks around till we can get there. I would love to get some of the older black ones.

Advance notice: I'll be kyūjō this basho and won't be able to do up the PDY thread as usual. My deepest apologies to my few fans and I promise to gambarise(TM) properly so as not to disappoint them next basho.

This time the basho starts at the latest possible date, the 14th, the earliest possible would be the 8th (always the 2nd Sunday of the month) - these 6 days mean a great difference in preparation for those barely recovered: it will likely enable Hakuoho to enter

Tickets are sold out - there is still hope at the official resale (nothing there ATM) and the chaya still have tickets, the list is down to 38 now - from top chair seats to 6 person masu boxes http://www.kokugikan-s.jp/SHOP/120325/list.html?_ga=2.112799236.1625360555.1703371385-861767733.1702633907

Kitanofuji is again not on the NHK schedule for the basho - kyujo or rather intai now. At least he still is active elsewhere:

Atamifuji also got the Chuspo Best newcomer of the year award

selection committee members: from the NSK the top shimpan Sadogatake, Fujishima, Kumegawa and Asakayama, Shibatayama, YDC top Yamauchi, Kitanofuji (! - good sign), journalists from Hochi, Sponichi, Daily sports, Sanspo, Nikkan sports, Kyodo, Jiji and 2 from the 2 Chuspo papers. o

Day 1 has Shibatayama with Mainoumi this time o

Terunofuji will be at the basho, Isegahama declared it today: "He says he's in good shape." http://www.47news.jp/news/10376773.html

Hakuoho really waits (has to wait) till the last moment, decision tomorrow before the torikumi making starts http://www.sanspo.com/article/20240111-GKFFIE4TVRM2NLHT3G57TDB4BE/

Same for Enho https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2024/01/11/kiji/20240111s00005000298000c.html

Nice, we are gonna start the year with a proper basho -- yokozuna, strong ozeki and sekiwake as well as young promising makuuchi gunning for their places. I'm getting hyped!

Hakuouhou is back and will face Yago on day 1. "I'm in. I am sure i will cope and I hope my decision will prove itself. I hated the demotion more than I hated the surgery.." he said.

Excited to see him again but I really hope this doesn't backfire

Enho's not on the Day 1/2 schedule as far as I can see on the Fanclub schedule preview.

Edit: Freshly demoted ex-juryo Takakento seems to be out at Ms3e.

The decision for Enho was made after keiko today, as announced, in consultation with the shisho he opted for kyujo and the drop to jonidan. "There's still danger for the neck, because his sumo-sense is still zero." o

But for Hakuoho the decision to enter was already made yesterday evening o, without watching today's keiko, as Hakuho had declared
