I know I should be more concerned about his knee, but why does Kinbozan's forehead look like he warms up in the shitakubeya by nutting the teppo pole?

Kirishima's win today looked more like Mongolian wrestling than sumo, IMO. Nothing at all wrong with that, but I can imagine the stick Hoshoryu's gonna get from his uncle.
Anyway, it's a huge obstacle overcome for the tsuna-tori ozeki. Two more to go...

Very nice of Terunofuji to level the field today. The H2H said it was going to be so, but this Kotonowaka has certainly stepped up his game, so I wasn't sure until it happened.
No shame in finding a yokozuna unbeatable, even for an ozeki hopeful. Recall Tochinoshin's and Kotoshogiku's abyssmal records against Hakuho, and they still made the grade.

My silly brain somehow likes to translate nimaigeri as two sheets of diarrhea (nimai geri). But that was a nice move, and I saw that little smirk.

Those two are going to have a fire rivalry up there for some time, which is great.

Looks like Shiek Yerbouti was in the east side tamari today, or was that a yak that's found a new disguise to get in to the kokugikan....

Already the return has paid off for Asanoyama, if he gets rid of the other contestants, even sanyaku is in reach

I think that they paired him up against Atamifuji tomorrow in part for this reason. He has a chance to give a MK to Atomic, put him out of contention of san'yaku, and put himself up to 9 wins with a chance to hit 10 in one sweep. Opposite test for Atamifuji. He already failed to beat Asanoyama on Day 15 in Aki, but if he manages to turn tables and go 7-7 he will likely have a relative softball for a KK on Day 15 since he already fought everyone in the joy.

The Endo v. Ryuden fight seemed like an old-timers match at the end of a holiday picnic. Kinda sad.

I don't know If 10 or 11 wins from M17 can at all be considered a quiet basho, but Shimazuumi seems intent on helping me find out.

Looking forward to Terunofuji v. Kirishima on Sunday! You bring the marbles, I'll bring the popcorn.

I have to ask, down in Makushita, am I the only one that was a  disappointed with Wakatakakage's win? I'd call it an inashi rather than a henka, but still, I'd hoped to see him move forward there.

I think he's still nursing the knee, and good for him, no need to overexert and aggravate it.

Carrots:

Kotonowaka - Ozeki

Kirishima - Yokozuna

Terunofuji - Another Cup

Kirishima's taking this.

I'm watching juryo now, and good grief.

Our traditional culprit sent Shiden three rows into the crowd a good two seconds after the bout had ended. It's getting worse.

A glimpse of WTK's first stint in Makushita.

Congratulations to Soga who secured his first ever kachi-koshi with a win over veteran Itakozakura today! He's shown some good sumo this basho, a definite improvement.

Now, I would never want him to lose, but he's been given an eighth bout on Day 14 - a loss would leave him with a rare 4-4 result which was last seen in Kyushu 2010.

Will be keeping my fingers crossed for a continuing return to form as he's elevated to the paid ranks.

With the loss today Takarafuji is in real peril of dropping to Juryo. Last time he was there more than 11 years ago. If he drops, he might try to get a quick repromotion. Otherwise I wonder if he bothers to stick it out on juryo. The curtain is starting to fall...

Onosato's first major wall will probably come when he reaches the joi. Before that he can blast everyone out easily, whereas in the joi he actually has to fight against stronger opposition who can withstand his power better and are technical enough to outskill him at the current level. Looking forward to see how he adapts.

One of the best examples how Oho has advanced was today's bout against Hiradoumi. The old Oho would've lost as soon as he was pushed to the edge of the tawara for the first time. The new Oho actually recovered, moved well laterally and kept Hiradoumi in front of him and pushed him out. It took Oho a while but looks like he has taken the next step.

Shonannoumi with two straight wins! Who would've guessed that after 10 straight losses. He'll be happy to see this basho end as soon as possible.

Shodai was robbed in bright daylight with this weird torinaoshi decision. No way that was a redo. A second bizarre decision was added later when Ura was given the win even though that bout would've been a much better candidate for a rematch. Weird to see the judges go yup, Ura was definitely in control of his body when Tobizaru's toe touched the clay outside the ring. And to add to the bizzareness, Ura's finger seemed to swipe the dohyo first.

Asanoyama was quite convincing in his return. Time will tell whether continuing was a smart decision. He might reap the short term benefit of a higher rank next basho, but I hope his ankle won't be further damaged.

I think the implosion of the universe was cleverly prevented by a small Japanese man wearing an Ichiyamamoto suit on the dohyo while the real Ichiyamamoto was tied up in the shitakubeya. Quick thinking by the Kyokai, but they need a longer term solution.

Midorifuji is a sumo wonder. I can only hope he remains healthy and entertains us for many basho to come. Today's makiotoshi was beautiful.

The slip that Daieisho narrowly avoided yesterday caught up with him today and Nishikigi got pretty much a free win. Good old second week Daishoho still has to worry about his kachikoshi for at least one more day.

Seemed more like Hoshoryuu accidentally caught his foot behind Kirishima's leg rather than Kirishima really executing a technique. A win is a win though, and Kirishima will gladly take it.

Kotonowaka too hesitant at the tachiai whereas Terunofuji meant business. A three way tie leaves the last few days full of excitement. Are we gonna get a new ozeki? A new yokozuna? Or is Terunofuji gonna get his swansong yusho?

I think Tobizaru was robbed. Pause @Kintamayama's video at 10:54. The quality of the video is bad, but i'm 100% positive i can see a tiny amount of sand/dust flying up. I hope we get a view with better quality. Until then i'll consider this a robbery.

Actually Wakatakakage was quite the offender in doing what I call the Hakuba-maneuver (I also call it the henka-uwate) all the way up and even as a sekiwake. That's why I was quite iffy on him. I understand that he's a yotsu guy relying more on speed and technique than brute force but if my memory serves me well, he was doing this crap every other day. Quite a contrast with his brother Wakamotoharu, mind you.

I have the feeling that Kotonowaka might fall short this basho on his ozeki run and he'd better not run into some injury trouble next basho or the chance might go past him with the Onosatos and Hakuohos of the world coming right up. Still, the guy is doing ozeki sumo (well, this term should have other meaning really, but I'll keep it) and has improved a lot from his early ultra-passive stance.

Also, rooting for Kitaharima tomorrow. Hopefully Akua can try a kakenage yet again.

To me the most awe-inspiring feat is Ura, horizontal and hand going down, fighting every instinct to pull his hand back up.  That was uncanny.

Interesting! Certainly not my recollection of Wakatakakage's Makuuchi stint, but clearly I need to go back and rewatch some basho!

Why?!

Because it's his turn for meeting Juryo visitors, and there's enough precedence.

Well Wakamotoharu is the size of Kirishima and Hoshoryu while WTK is closer to Ura and Tobizaru than he is to WMH. I'll cut him some slack.

As for Onosato and Hakuoho, let's see them fight at least one basho in the joi before we start getting ahead of ourselves.
