Let's get the Kotonowaka and Asanoyama hype going too - everyone's on an ozeki run!

One-armed Asanoyama is still a force, apparently. Kirishima is kadoban, he wasted his comeback.

Don't forget Hokutofuji. He is in 11-3 group too.

I edited him in for a minute because I overlooked that he already met Hoshoryu, but he should be paired with Daieisho instead of Hoshoryu to have a proper opponent for the sekiwake

A third sekiwake spot for Kotonowaka no? Sucks for Nishikigi unless they give him one too (aka GTB gonna be hilarious lmao)

The kensho packs are too big for Kirishima now, they give his opponent double strength

Nishikigi is not about to complete an Ozeki run, so, I think he ends up taking Abi's Komusubi place. As for Kotonowaka, he probably needs 11 wins to force an extra Sekiwake spot.

Hakuoho Hoshoryu it is, Daieisho gets Takanosho instead

I am not a torikumi maker, but Hokutofuji gets Nishikigi? Since the yusho line is going to be 12-3 Nishikigi is now out of the running and he is on a losing streak. Surely Kotonowaka would have been a much worthier opponent for Hokutofuji.

Actually, young Ichinojo took Makuuchi by storm. 13-2 JY and a Sekiwake promotion - Hokuseiho can only dream of such success.

Well, Hakuōho is certainly not dreaming of that success. He is having a similarly storming basho as Ichinojō, except he is doing it one basho less and one year younger, and it's not his fault there are no ōzeki or yokozuna worthy enough to greet him. And if he does grab the yūshō it'll be something Ichinojō never achieved at this stage.

Kanto-sho of course for Hakuoho, maybe more if he wins tomorrow - but they tend to avoid the complex conditions again lately, like "if he also wins the yusho".

Gonoyama and Shonannoumi also can reach the 10 wins - all 3 new makuuchi getting the newcomer sansho would likely be a first - maybe instead of the first ever triple ozeki promotion we get at least this. But Hokutofuij also should get a kanto-sho and Nishikigi if he wins - I doubt they'll hand out 5 of them.

Gino-sho only for Hoshoryu and maybe the shukun-sho scrapped to limit the sansho.

Hoshoryu vs Hakuoho is going to be nuclear. Sturm und Drang.

I hope that Nishikigi gets the shukun-sho.

He deserves it, Tobizaru as well though, he actually beat both ozeki and yokozuna, so he has more shukun points - Nishikigi only has a fusensho ginboshi - too many sansho candidates this time

Beating a yokozuna with only one win on day 1 and only 3 bouts this basho means reduced points, as does a win against only a makekoshi ozeki, so I expect the shukun-sho to be scrapped

Puzzling henka by Wakamotoharu. Even if he wins with it, it does nothing positive for his Ozeki promotion chances.

On the other hand, if Hoshoryu wins tomorrow it will be difficult to deny him his well-deserved promotion.

If looks could maim Wakamotoharu would have left in the giant wheelchair.

I'm glad the henka attempt didn't come off. I think there will be other chances at Ozeki for Hoshoryu even if he doesn't win tomorrow, but if not then that bout would have stayed with him forever.

Giving up on Aoiyama was a bit premature again - still enough spirit left in the 2nd oldest sekitori

Kimura Yodo also needed the help of a yobidashi to retie the mawashi of Chiyoshoma - I guess that will become the norm now to save time

In a way that reminds me of Terunofuji vs kadoban Kotoshogiku in the last bout...

On another note, Asanoyama is still a force to be reckoned with. He's still very strong in classic yotsu/yori sumo and matches up well with other yotsu sumo rikishi. That was on display today, Kirishima didn't even get so much as a look at a winning position.

Seemed very odd that such an important match as Hokutofuji vs Hakuoho was so early in the torukumi. This rookie looks anything but green, which is such a contrast with Hokuseiho.

Kinbozan wins by shitatenage. Evidently it wasn't my imagination.

Glad to see the assistance of a yobidashi arriving much more promptly for today's mawashi matta.

Wtf was that henka from Wakamotoharu? For the 1st time ever I was glad he lost...
Go, Hoshoryu!

Asanoyama totally dominated Kirishima. 0-1-14 is no more kadoban than 7-8, but it would have given him 2 months extra recuperation.
I don't know whether it was his decision to return or pressure from above, but someone was a damned fool.

I just watched the replays.

After Wakamotoharu, I was thinking... 'Geeez, this is the most deflated crowd I've ever seen in ozumo...'

Little did I know...

Flashes of the old Tobizaru; he throws Chiyoshoma into the crowd and still ends up farther off the dohyo.

Gino-sho for Hoshoryu without a doubt, unconditional
Kanto-sho for Hokutofuji unconditional
Kanto-sho for Hakuoho unconditional
Shukun-sho for Hakuoho conditional
Kanto-sho for winner of Kotonowaka vs Ryuden (because of Daddy Sadogatake)

Very badly off topic, but is Hokutofuji the first sekitori in a while to have a hairline that's receding that badly?

It's a joy to see how Hakuoho takes his time to recieve his kensho money, especially the deep bow. Hardly anyone does it properly.

I don't pay enough attention to juryo, but Aminishiki is the last one I recall.
I wonder if Hokutofuji will also miraculously recover his hair when he retires...

Just because he is new.

You can see this behaviour always in newer rikishis. With time they ALL become more convenient...
