Tochiazuma might be the record holder, if you disregard that his first jonokuchi bout was actually on day 8 (he won out and ended at 4-0-3).

Tobizaru had 11 as well.

I make it 10 for Tobizaru (plus one for mae-zumo), so one less than Tomokaze.

Yes, I make it 12 for Tochiazuma (with no mention of mae-zumo) - so Tomokaze can tie this ?record? next basho.

Many thanks for doing the research!

Although we don't have those maezumo records available, based on his first ranking position it's fairly safe to say that Tochiazuma went 3-0 there.

Mitoryu !

Twelve consecutive bashos with a KK/MK alternance in the 6-9 to 9-6 range.

And last 4 in a row with perfect 9-6/6-9/9-6/6-9. I predict a 9-6 for this Haru.

Finishing it off by losing to Kagayaki and Shohozan on consecutive days is quite a feat in itself.

Chris the conspiracy theorist will be watching Shimanoumi for tell-tale signs -- a new wristwatch, buying the guys dinner, etc.

All of Asanoyama's losses since his return have been on Day 11.  He was scheduled and did win that day in the first match of his return.

And it was on Day 11 that the news of his scandal come out. Although he still had his bout on that day and won before pulling out the next day.

As it is often said rikishi are very superstitious, here’s a good reason to be one.

Did Haru basho just not happen or something?

The original post on January 18 was true at the time, but it hasn't happened since (days 4 and 12 in March, day 8 so far in May).

This thread has not been used for awhile but I noticed a pattern while looking at the just released banzuke. In Jonidan, Asakawasumi has had an interesting start to his career.

Maybe a 5-2 this time to keep the pattern going?

Unfortunately, I think I jinxed the poor kid. He hit a gigantic wall after his first kachi-koshi. The pattern was already broken by day 5 of the tournament. :-(

Just part of a larger pattern, his next few basho will be 1-2-3-4-5...
