Terunofuji situation - Kyushu 2023

Recommended Posts

Injured Yokozuna Terunofuji has not decided if he will be entering Kyushu yet. Today at the jungyo, he did some butsugari with Meisei. "I haven't really done any sumo lately so I'm not sure of my condition. I feel I'm not ready to train with others yet but I have been moving my body and am doing everything I can at this juncture " he said. He has  fractured a part of his hip bone as well.

I think he will be out for the third straight basho.

Is this now confirmed, or is it the same "fractured vertebrae / vertebral plate" discussion from earlier? Confusion seems to be stemming from Japanese "koshi" = hip/lower torso in general

Nothing is confirmed, but the later articles all use koshibone=hipbone and not just koshi no hone=bone of the hip, which makes it more likely that it's actually the hipbone. And since they report "also a hipbone fracture", it indicates that it's something additional: fractured vertebrae is more or less part of the previous problem and would usually be called differently.

This isn't necessarily a translation problem when those sources are (apparently) keeping it vague on purpose. I imagine that there's Japanese people speculating about this, as well.

腰骨の一部 -like I said, part of the hip bone. Whatever the hell that means.

I'm not so sure about that, since google image search of koshibone and koshinohone return basically the exact same pictures of the hip+lower back area.

Same word. The "no" equals the difference between hone and bone,  just like Takasago no heya, is equal to Takasago-beya.

Terunofuji arrived in Kyushu and started training, facing heyamate Takarafuji for 11 bouts, won them all, 10 by yorikiri. "I think I'm gradually getting better. I will see how i'm doing and decide if I'm entering Kyushu," he said. "I know that my body is not the kind that heals quickly so I need double the time to get ready," he added. "He is training and is here with the intention of entering Kyushu," said Isegahama Oyakata.

Is your translation still "no way he enters"?

Totally. You disagree?

No, I totally defer to you on interpreting these statements, was just curious if the latest statements had done anything to change your view.

Even us hicks know that if he said, "I'm not feeling strong; I'll probably not enter the tournament", the YDC etc. would tut-tut up a storm.

However, if he says, "I'm listening to my body and gambarizing® so I can start the basho", then at the last possible minute the Oyakata can tell them he sternly overrode the Yokozuna and wouldn't let him compete.

Just once, could they come up with something interesting like "he found a rat in the chanko nabe"?

Not surprising in the least. Will Hatsu 2024 be the big man’s last hurrah? The final curtain call?

He has damaged his body enough already. It's painful just reading about his injuries. It's not just a knee, but all over his body.

It seems he still has some competitive drive left, but I hope he retires, makes room for Ochil, and begins a long and successful oyakata career.

Is it possible he's doing what Hakuho did? Wait until there's another one with the rope before calling it?

At this rate that might take years.

No, Hakuho wanted to stay as a Yokozuna until the Tokyo Olympics. The delay just extended his presence.

if they cancelled the olympics outright, instead of postponement, he might have retired immediately.

Or it might be after this tournament.

Terunofuji was interviewed the other day by a Sunday morning show on NTV, on air yesterday - the video was gone by today, I haven't found a proper summary, this is the only useful one http://www.moezine.com/1051471/

He properly explained the injury: the broken/crushed bone at the hip was a vertebra and what was squashed was an intervertebral disc

And very interesting: he presented Takerufuji as makuuchi next basho, not published yet - he himself had scouted him at Tottori Johoku high
