If I remember correctly, the last double ozeki promotion was Takanonami and Musashimaru. Correct. The last three double Ozeki promotions involved rikishi from Futagoyama-beya. Wakanohana I himself, then in Hanakago-beya, became Ozeki after a double promotion. The second and third to last double promotions were Futagoyama/Hanakago combinations. The double promotion before those was a Kasugano-beya pair. So not much variety in terms of stables when it comes to the last handful double promotions... Hoshoryu vs Tobizaru - Hoshoryu should have no issue out-maneuvering the little guy. Kirishima vs Nishikigi - Nishikigi finished the last basho with 8 straight wins. If he still has the same form, he will give Kirishima all he can handle. I see this match as a potential upset win fro Nishikigi. I mean Tobizaru beat Hosh last basho, so I'm not sure it's that much of a breeze match-up for the latter...
RabidJohn 1,663 Posted July 7, 2023 The joi looks pretty dangerous for any sanyaku with an eye on 11+ wins this time, and Hakuoho looks to me like he could pull 'an Ichinojo' on his first makuuchi outing.

That was an alien in his body trying to experience Sumo on his trip to Earth. When he left (beamed up to his spaceship), Ichi had nothing left and was forced to go intai.
Koorifuu 886 Posted July 9, 2023 Very dodgy sumo, raised eyebrows and one defiant ex-ozeki, but day one's an early success.
robnplunder 974 Posted July 9, 2023 No surprises as all Ozeki hopefuls (Diaieisho, Hoshoryu, and Wakamotoharu) won their 1st match. Things are even looking better with two current Ozeki going kyujo. Maybe, there is room for two or more new Ozeki in the next basho? Day 2: Daiesio vs Mitakeumi - I am giving the edge to Mr. D. Mitakeumi's Ichinojo imitation to continue. Wakamotorharu vs Tobizaru - Am expecting an entertaining win for Wakamotoharu after what I've seen from Tobi on day one. Hoshoryu vs Shodai - Hoshoryu all the way.

Seiyashi 4,071 Posted July 9, 2023 Maybe the generic basho thread for now. Doubt the rest of the sekitori really make much of a difference to the ōzeki at this time.

robnplunder 974 Posted July 11, 2023 (edited) Shodai looked like his old Ozeki self in beating Wakamotoharu who goes 2-1. Nishikigi upset Hoshryu who also goes 2-1. Daieisho had an easy time with undersized Midorifuji who is clearly out of his league in going against top rankers. The good news for the 2-1 Ozeki hopefuls is that Terunofuji looked terrible in the last two matches. If it didn't happen already, I see a kyujo coming. Either way, this is good news for all three Ozeki candidates. OTOH, Takayasu looks to be strong enough to throw a wrench in their way. Day 4: Hoshoryu to get his 3rd win against Mitakeumi who looks to be clueless in getting a win. Daieiso & Nishikigi match is a tossup in my opinion. I give the edge to Mr. D just b/c he is my personal favorite. Wakamotoharu will get an easy win against Midorifuji. robnplunder 974 Posted July 12, 2023 NIshikigi didn't have to show much to beat Daieisho who gets his 1st loss. Ugh! Everyone is benefitting from Mitakeumi's decline. It was an easy win for Hoshoryu who rebounded from the loss on Day 3. Easy win for Wakamotoharu against Midorifuji. Day 5: Daieisho meets Mesisei who has a very poor record against the former. Mr. D should pick up his 4th win. Wakamotoharu goes agasint an undefeated Nishikigi. Despite his 4 straight wins, I couldn't see how good his current form is (a fusen win, and a short match on day 4). He needs to bring his best to beat Mr. W whom I think will prevail. Hoshoryu matches up well against Abi who settled down at his current rank after his Yusho. Mr. H should get his 4th win. All the hopeful's chance at the promotion looks good so far, especially with Teruno & Takakeisho out. Only Takayasu and each other seem to be standing in their quest. Gonoyama, if he keeps on winning, may play a spoiler down the stretch. It's wait and see on Kirishima who had a nice win on his re-entry into the basho. If he stays healthy, he may also be a spoiler. dingo 1,159 Posted July 12, 2023 (edited) Given that all ozeki candidates are 3-1, they have to go at least 50-50 against each other in order to be able to afford another loss against any other rikishi, for example Kirishima and maintain the possibility for a triple promotion. If one of the three loses both bouts against the other candidates, they'll have to win against all other rikishi. Daieisho is in a better position cause he can afford an extra loss. Still, pretty thin margins for all of them. Edited July 12, 2023 by dingo

Sumo_da 34 Posted July 12, 2023 Gonoyama is by far my favourite this tournament. He just seems like a great package: good strength, technique and movement. He doesn't "look" like a champion but he has that fire many other youngsters lack. It's also great to see one of Goeido's disciples do so well.
