Nagoya Ozeki Promotion Tracking (Daiesho, Hosoryu, Wakmotoharu)

Recommended Posts

Things are going according to the plans as all 3 won their matches.  Daieisho got a fusen win, and Hoshoryu beat Ura easily.  Wakamotoharu almost lost before pushing out his opponent.

With Asanoyama out, too, the obstacles the three are facing are getting less.   Could it be possible that we may have 2 or even 3 Ozeki promotions after the basho?

 Day 9:

Daieisho vs Abi - Daieisho should win his 7th.  Despite their close head-to-head record, Daieisho has better current form and has more recent wins against Abi.

Hoshoryu vs Hiradoumi - An easy match for Hoshoryu who will go 8-1.  Yusho or Jun-Yusho is a real possibility which will make it easier to be promoted even with 32 wins.

Wakamotoharu vs Ura - As much as I like Ura, I can't see him beating Wakamotoharu.

Kirishima lost and is certain to go kadoban.  He should go kyujo again if not done already.

They themselves are the most formidable obstacles. 2 seems more likely than 3,  especially as Wakamotoharu can only afford one more loss. If he loses to either Hoshoryu or Daieisho then he has to win every other bout. And if he beats them both then he puts them in the same position.

It is going to happen; we may see 2 or 3 new Ozeki in the next basho.

Hoshoryu had a scare. No surprise in the other two matches.

Day 10:

Hoshoryu will beat Kotonowaka as he has done in their last 10 matches.   That's domination!

Daieisho goes against Hiradoumi who looked strong against Hoshoryu.  They match up against each other well.  I wouldn't be surprised if Daieisho gets another loss here.

Wakamotoharu faces inconsistent Onosho and should be able to dodge him with ease.

At this point, Hoshoryu is looking like a yusho winner, jun-yusho at the least.   50-50 for Daieisho.   I don't see it for Wakamotoharu.

Google Bard seems to assume that Hoshoryu's promotion is a done deal.

....I wonder if some of those tools have scraped sumo Reddit or even this forum.

I wouldn't be surprised. Any human could see Mitakeumi is a spent force (and he's got three yusho, not one), but the rest is actually pretty decent.

Wakamotoharu's chance at the promotion is almost gone with the loss to Onosho.  I can't see him going 5-0 the rest of the way.

What!!!!!  Kotonowaka beats Hoshoryu for the 1st time in the last 10 matches between the two.  He faces Tamawashi tomorrow, a must-win for the younger Mongolian.

Daieisho is looking better and better for the promotion.  He should be able to beat Kirishima on day 11.

Like I predicted, we will be seeing only one promotion to Ozeki, Daieisho.
Hoshoryu and Wakamotorharu don't have what it takes just yet, they should still carry their Ozeki run into Aki.

A tiny bit premature, don't you think?

Interesting stage of the play. If one would consider the 33 as set in stone, the three candidates would need a collective 12-3 from their last five bouts. As they will most likely all meet each other, they are already guaranteed a 3-3, so they all would have to win out in every other bout.

But who cares about the 33...

[Disclaimer: For Graph layout reasons, I would truly hate if all of them made it.]

A 32 with a jun-yusho just may work for one of them.  Daieisho yusho, Hoshoryu jun-yusho can net two Ozeki promotions.  :-)

Presuming none of their intra-sekiwake bouts is cut due to any extreme torikumi oddity, there's only one way for all three of them to get to 33.

- They all win every single bout against non-sekiwake opposition.
- Wakamotoharu beats both Daieisho and Hoshoryu.
- Hoshoryu beats Daieisho.

Wouldn't it be the other way around to promote two Ozeki - Hoshoryu yushos and Daieisho jun-yushos?

That'd work, too. As long as they have 32 total wins, either "yusho" will help get them promoted.

Just thought I'd add to the discussion that Daiesho already has a jun-yusho in his ozeki run from Haru basho.

Hoshoryu beats Tamawashi for his 9th win and faces Hokutofuji on day 12.  That is going to be a tough match given Hokutofuji's current form.  He almost beat Wakamotoharu today.

Wakamotoharu stayed alive with a tough win.  He faces Kirishima on day 12 and should get another win against Kirishima who may not be at 100% physically.

Daieisho looked lackluster in his loss against Kirishima.  That was a shocker!   But he faces Tamawashi on day 12 and should be able to notch another win despite having a career loss record against the latter.  He was 4-1 against their last 5 matches.

30 wins for Hoshoryu & Daieisho - they need to go 3-1 the rest of the way for a sure promotion.  2-2 & a jun-yusho for a likely promotion.

Wakamotoharu must run the table.

Daieisho is now back against the wall as he loses to Tamawashi.   He falls out of the Yusho race, too.   Tomorrow, he faces Wakamotoharu.

Hoshoryu falls against Hokutofuji for the first time in 5 head-to-head matches.  Like Daieisho, no Yusho for him.  He faces Kirishima tomorrow.  I believe Hoshoryu will beat him though and stay in the race.

Wakamotoharu is done, done, done.  One down, two still alive.

Well... We might get 0 promotions after all.

That is a very strong possibility now.

If they don't make it with Terunofuji, Takakeissho out, and Kirishima returning from a kyujo stint, they are not ready to be an Ozeki yet.

Waka is out, but he can spoil the party for Daieisho tomorrow. Hoshoryu has to beat the supposedly injured Kirishima, who is looking more and more invincible every day.

The dream might be over tomorrow.

Well, at least they should still be able to hit double digits and do an Asanoyama after a couple more basho, maybe. Doesn't change the fact that Terunofuji and Takakeishō are increasingly unreliable, medically speaking, and there's still going to be pressure for new ōzeki.

And honestly? Sumo wise, they're ticking most of the right boxes at the moment.

Those in a playoff at 11-4 would likely be promoted. That can't happen for all 3 any-more with one down tomorrow, but Waka can still make it this way.
