Tigerboy1966 1,539 Posted March 15, 2023 (edited) I am loving Daieisho's sumo even more than usual this time. So often we see oshi- wrestlers start looking for a pull when their inital charge stalls but this lad just ignites the second stage rocket and keeps on coming. If he sees off Shodai tomorrow I think he will be just about favourite to win this one. Edited March 15, 2023 by Tigerboy1966 ce

I wonder if we will see a record breaking number of repeat yūshō winners in the top division at some point in the near future. The current Miyagino beya is located at the old Azumazeki premises. The resemblance is uncanny on many levels. Similar build. Skin tone. Facial features. Identical height. His way of moving reminds me of Akebono, too, but I’m now seeing the Hakuho influence in his movements, as mentioned by another poster. I think we’re witnessing the start of something big. since_94 650 Posted March 15, 2023 Day four was a little bland, IMHO. The most humdrum so far. Not much replay value, Asanoyama’s loss and Abi’s dispatching of the Ozeki and would-be heir apparent notwithstanding.

Nice little technical gesture that reminded me of his mentor.

Octofuji 387 Posted March 15, 2023 Having to fight Asanoyama then Hokuseiho on consecutive days is a pretty tough juryo schedule for Ichinojo! One of the most interesting things about this basho is wondering how good these guys coming up, or back up (Asanoyama, Kinbozan, Hokuseiho) really are...

I definitely agree with that angle. Speaking of Hokuseiho, he is doing well but I'm not quite convinced his style will be effective against top makuuchi. He seems too passive. But perhaps that will change. Kinbozan seems strong but a fairly regular oshi rikishi and we already have plenty of those with Takakeisho being the only one who has managed to make it to ozeki.
Benevolance 2,519 Posted March 15, 2023 Hokuseiho is simply modeling his entire sumo style off of Shodai's tachi ai.
Tigerboy1966 1,539 Posted March 15, 2023 So we have had 7 different winners in the last 7 basho, and I think the record for a run of this type is 8, from November 1990 up to January 1992. It looks very likely that the record will be equaled. The last seven winners have been Mitakeumi (now 1-3), Wakatakakage (0-4), Terunofuji (kyujo), Ichinojo (juryo), Tamawashi (1-3), Abi (3-1) and Takakeisho (2-2 and obviously hurt). Abi and Takakeisho are the only two of these who look remotely like yusho contenders to me.

No one has won Makuuchi after starting worse than that (it's been done from 1-3 a couple of times in Juryo).
