Looks like our Yokozuna hopeful's hopes have been dashed only 4 days in.

I am loving Daieisho's sumo even more than usual this time. So often we see oshi- wrestlers start looking for a pull when their inital charge stalls but this lad just ignites the second stage rocket and keeps on coming. If he sees off Shodai tomorrow I think he will be just about favourite to win this one.

I wonder if we will see a record breaking number of repeat yūshō winners in the top division at some point in the near future.

Are we now calling Ichinojo the next ozeki?

That's reserved for Abi for quite a while now

Nope, it's still Shodai.

Fun fact- Hokuseihou is currently living in the single room that Akebono (same height- 2.04 meters) lived in back then. The current Miyagino beya is located at the old Azumazeki premises.

The resemblance is uncanny on many levels. Similar build. Skin tone. Facial features. Identical height. His way of moving reminds me of Akebono, too, but I’m now seeing the Hakuho influence in his movements, as mentioned by another poster. I think we’re witnessing the start of something big.

Day four was a little bland, IMHO. The most humdrum so far. Not much replay value, Asanoyama’s loss and Abi’s dispatching of the Ozeki and would-be heir apparent notwithstanding.

His use of his hips really stood out to me today, dipping a little to gain leverage and drive with power. Nice little technical gesture that reminded me of his mentor.

In this interview he told that he trains Hakuho's migi yottsu grip - that improved his sumo

he wants to give the oyakata a makuuchi-debut kanto-sho for 10 wins as a present

No, it's Shoudai. Always was, always is, and always will be.

Two ex-makuuchi meeting in sandanme has got to be a first, surely.

Aoiyama's foot didn't look out to me. It reminded me of Asanoyama v Tochinoshin in 2019.

The next ozeki Shodai comment you made in the video the other day was part of the reason for my comment today. The other reason being Ichinojo winning against Asanoyama today.

Having to fight Asanoyama then Hokuseiho on consecutive days is a pretty tough juryo schedule for Ichinojo!

One of the most interesting things about this basho is wondering how good these guys coming up, or back up (Asanoyama, Kinbozan, Hokuseiho) really are...

I definitely agree with that angle. Speaking of Hokuseiho, he is doing well but I'm not quite convinced his style will be effective against top makuuchi. He seems too passive. But perhaps that will change. Kinbozan seems strong but a fairly regular oshi rikishi and we already have plenty of those with Takakeisho being the only one who has managed to make it to ozeki.

Hokuseiho is simply modeling his entire sumo style off of Shodai's tachi ai.

So we have had 7 different winners in the last 7 basho, and I think the record for a run of this type is 8, from November 1990 up to January 1992.

It looks very likely that the record will be equaled. The last seven winners have been Mitakeumi (now 1-3), Wakatakakage (0-4), Terunofuji (kyujo), Ichinojo (juryo), Tamawashi (1-3), Abi (3-1) and Takakeisho (2-2 and obviously hurt). Abi and Takakeisho are the only two of these who look remotely like yusho contenders to me.

It's very rare for someone to start 2-2 and win the yusho; the last time was Harumafuji's 11-4 swan song. No one has won Makuuchi after starting worse than that (it's been done from 1-3 a couple of times in Juryo).

You say you don't want to jinx him, and then you go and jinx him. RIP Takayasu's chances.

WTK's yūshō came from a 0-3 into 1-3 start.

Are you perhaps thinking of this (one of a very few JY from 0-3)?
