Haru 2023 discussion (results)

To hark back to a conversation from earlier this basho, I got a good looks at Ajigawa Oyakata's (ex-Aminishiki) bonce while he was on shimpan duty today. He's still got a bald spot at the back which argues against a syrup or a weave. Instead it looks like a comb-over (his) left to right.

Would expect a very experienced rikishi as Takayasu to keep his foot up until the other guy loses. Silly loss. On his way to another playoff defeat.

Arguably, the one thing Takayasu is completely new to is keeping his head in a yūshō race.

Very enjoyable day of sumo today with empressive wins of Hokuseiho and Kinbouzan.

I am wondering. If you had to choose one to make it to Yokozuna. Who would you choose? You can make a case for both of them. Hokuseiho is probably the strongest of the two but Kinbouzan looks way more allround. I tend to go for Kinbouzan.

In any case I think they will both have a very hard time dealing with Houshoryu in the near future. Because of their big posture they'll be on the receiving end of a lot of his uwatenages.

I thought Hiradoumi had lost but the toes-turned-over rule was called differently yet again.

Yes, I've got the replay frozen on the part where Hiradoumi's foot has completely turned over, sliding along the surface, and Takayasu's foot is still about an inch-and-a-half above on the bails. I know they can't reverse the call at this point. But do they review this stuff later and atleast publicly acknowledge these kind of errors?

Rewatching the bout, it seemed to me that Takayasu lost balance at that point, him being kind of top heavy. So I guess keeping the foot up would've been quite difficult...

They are super inconsistent with how they call the top of the foot, you never know what they'll do. But in general, the shimping has been very lacklustre this basho, some inexcusable decisions and lack of initiative.

I might be wrong but I’m guessing that it’s been quite a while since a musubi no ichiban featured an S2e as the highest rank - tomorrow it’s Kiribayama vs Ryūden

Whats up with Ryuden this basho anyway? He's falling face first onto the clay so often he's going to have to change his name to Aoiyama.

And why not trade out Nishikigi for Midorifuji for joi scheduling?

They're going to need 9 maegashira (only Tobizaru fought Takakeisho among the sanyaku, and he can't face Daieisho).  Kotoshoho will likely be not used by the time they get to need one that's the 9th down, so it would be Midorifuji anyway.

That time for WTK is day 10, so we'll see if they use Kotoshoho or swap in Midorifuji when the torikumi comes out (we've been debating this over in the GKA topic).

Ryuden gets to try to avoid make-koshi on the musubi no ichiban.  So there's that.(Clappingwildly...)

Onosho appears to be out. Not listed on the day 10 schedule. Juryo Guy (TM) returns!

Edit: Oh, there's a thread on rikishi status. I will leave my shame here for all to see.

"Quite a while" is quite an understatement. (Laughing...)

It also seems they are quite quick today in reaching the final bouts, they have to give the sekiwake the shikiri time usually meant for yokozuna

It feels like Hoshoryu is going to sneak up from behind and steal this basho.

Let me put it this way: the only person above him on the banzuke whom Midorifuji has never won against is Tamawashi, and that's only because they never met before.

Oh, and he's 6-1 against Hoshoryu.

Well after tomorrow he's got all the in form sanyaku lined up so it won't be easy.

Back to the sports psychologist for Kotoshoho, I guess...

Midorifuji 9-0! He's proven himself capable of beating anybody, so a yusho is a distinct possibility IMO.
I can't see him getting a zensho, but 12-3 has been a winning score fairly often recently, and that's certainly within his reach.

Brilliant comeback from Kotonowaka against in-form Shodai today.

Kiribayama looks like he belongs as the highest ranking rikishi in the musubi no ichiban. That was a great show to finish the day's sumo.
I don't really care that it was against the out-of-form Ryuden; he also put on a great show.
