Seems to me that Shodai is not wasting any time getting a new Ozeki run going ;-)

And if he succeeds, he'll waste no time getting back to Maegashira or lower Sanyaku, so he can get the run after that going, too.

I'm not so much worried about the new talent and a fading Terunofuji, as the cumulative effect Takakeisho's regular injuries are having on his potential. He's already not anymore the rikishi he was 2 years ago, but at some point his body will give out entirely. In that sense I'm also worried that he will not have many chances left.

Even without the injuries, Takakeisho has already peaked two years ago, perhaps even three. To me his recent results are more reflective of the current competition.

My money´s down this was his last chance at making it to Yokozuna. Asanoyama will be back in Makuuchi in the next tourney, also Teru at perhaps 80 %, and Hoshoryu won´t regress. Tkakeisho´s window of opportunity is closed, hopefully he remains a good ozeki for a few more years.

Sure, some people make it to ozeki twice in a career, but has anyone ever done it three times? If anyone could, Shodai is the guy!

Has Midorifuji got tungsten leg bones or something?

You probably mean titanium.  Tungsten (wire) is very brittle (that's why incandescent light bulbs mysteriously blow out sometimes).

Signed, Professor ACKSHULLY.  (Detective...)

Chiyonofuji maybe?

You'd certainly have to go back to young Chiyonofuji to find a lighter yusho winner, should Midori somehow pull this off.

I know exactly what I meant: tungsten, for its great density.
Because Midorifuji fights like he weighs a lot more than he ackshully does.

Titanium, while being a go-to metal for IRL implants, is a very lightweight metal, so then the joke don't work, see? :-P

OK, have it your way, but when he breaks his leg, don't come poor-mouthing to me.:-D

Absolutely. He'll be the ultimate elevator rikishi.

Is Ochiai's elbow okay? Because it looked like it was hyperextended.

He said it's OK when he talked to the media afterwards o - but we'll see if it really is

True. It's a shame, really...

Well the consensus, both on this forum and in the sumo world in general, is that a purely oshi wrestler could never become a Yokozuna. Takakeisho set out to prove the naysayers wrong, and it appears he'll ultimately fall short of his quest.

Now might he have reached Yokozuna had he not suffered his various injuries? In the current climate with a dearth of talent at the top? Quite possibly. When there was stiffer competition from the likes of Hakuho, Kakuryu, and fellow Ozeki with more staying power than Shodai and Mitakeumi? It didn't appear likely.

So it's hard to say that he has fallen short of his potential. If anything, he has more than fulfilled it, whatever happens going forward.

Love that he’s fighting like his old form, but please, anything but that! He’s not cut out to handle the pressure of Ozeki rank. He’s almost said as much, if I’m not mistaken.

On another note, Tochinoshin not going to win any points with that forearm smash against Enho. Perfectly legal, and brutally effective. Wonder what Miyagino-San had to say to his protégé about it afterwards

Miyagino-San probably said something along the lines of, "you need to watch out for the forearm smash. Some guys have a history of using that at the tachi-ai". (Beingninja...)

Ochiai was demoted to tsukebito of Hokuseiho by Miyagino because he lost to Tamashoho, who is still tsukebito of Tamawashi: "He needs that tsukebito (humble servant) experience", since then he kept winning o

 - but he injured his elbow

He covered well for that by technique today, after Enho and Kawazoe the 3rd Miyagino katasukashi this basho http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query_bout.aspx?show_form=0&year=2023.03&kimarite=15&heya1=51

If you're talking three separate runs then no-one has done it in the modern era. But Tochiazuma did get promoted to ōzeki three times, it's just the last two were by getting the ten wins or more from sekiwake immediately after demotion.
