I am the Yokozuna 186 Posted March 17, 2023 Apparently, noone has ever succeeded at Sekiwake or above to kachikoshi from a 0-5 start. Wish Wakatakakage some luck to achieve that.

Akinomaki 39,764 Posted March 17, 2023 The last ozeki on the way to kadoban and the yokozuna on his last legs - looks like we'll get at last a real change of the guards
Akinomaki 39,764 Posted March 17, 2023 3-3 now for juryo vs. makuuchi, this basho the better rikishi are (forced to be) in juryo - as usual Asanoyama's bouts are the most popular on NHK, and not a makuuchi bout - and this basho we seem to have an all time low in interest in what's going on

Koorifuu 886 Posted March 17, 2023 (edited) Late(ish) bloomer alert on Nishinoryu. Joined aged 18, took him three years to establish himself in makushita, where he's been a journeyman yoyo for ten basho. Now aged 22, he's defeated genuinely tough opposition* to get to 3-0 from ms15. * Daiseiryu, former juryo + makushita yusho six months ago Kanzaki, sandanme tsukedashi, 31-14 career record Hitoshi, 42-10-21 career record. Akinomaki 39,764 Posted March 17, 2023 (edited) Rare event on day 5: Tsushimanada had the kachinanori and winning technique announced and then a mono-ii with a reversal of decision, his toe was out before and Churanoumi got the win o Ikazuchi was extra slow in remembering that he saw the foot out Edited March 17, 2023 by Akinomaki
RabidJohn 1,663 Posted March 17, 2023 If Hokuseiho is the future of sumo, things are going to get tedious. His tachi-ai makes Shodai's look good, and he's as dynamic as a brick wall. Anyone heard anything about Kiribayama's injury? I can only admire his will to win, but I hope he doesn't come to rue the decision to keep going while Nishikigi was trying to break his elbow. Seregost 130 Posted March 17, 2023 (edited) It looks like Tamasoho won't follow his senpai Tamawashi in his injury-free career :S. Hope he's okay, he was fighting with great spirit these days. Funny to see Midorifuji stacking those wins in that part of the banzuke; the little guy never stops surprising me, even slowing down his katasukashi rate. The last time Daieisho went 6-0, he made Yusho. I am hoping he repeats that. He is currently the best rikishi who will not make the Ozeki rank, a regular Sanyuku but not good enough to sustain an Ozeki run. He is now my favorite rikishi ... and Midorifuji. dingo 1,159 Posted March 17, 2023 Is Takarafuji heading for intai? Would he be willing to continue in Juryo? Although with his current level who knows how long he would last there as well...

He didn’t do himself any favors resisting the inevitable on day 6. Unlike Hokuseiho, who appeared to just give up. Maybe he was gassed…

Henkas and slap downs don’t exactly fire most of us up. Interesting to note crowd reactions to Mitakeumi defeating Takakeisho; looks like a lot of Japanese at ringside were visibly happy to see the Ozeki lose. Leading one to posit that even if he were to be promoted, he might not be a popular Yokozuna, but that’s a moot point anyway.

Sanspo reports an injured left arm for him o, for Tamashoho an injured left foot o - but no details, Kiribayama didn't stop on the way out to give an interview, as is requested by the NSK 1

Midorifuji not only leads the current sekitori with 14 wins by this technique, it also makes up 26% of his wins (a historical first). There is also a caveat, the technique was never employed at the Nagoya honbasho. There is also a good chance that he might leave with the all-time record Edited March 17, 2023 by rhyen

Suwihuto 125 Posted March 17, 2023 I've not watched for long enough to remember, but are there phases of a lot of henkas before they go out of fashion again for a while? Maybe these soft tachiais might be explained by that too - everyone's expecting a henka, so nobody moves forward any more.
