Yamanashi 3,911 Posted September 8, 2020 Do you mean Samurai Gourmet? I rewatch that every month or so. It's written by the author of the Kodoku no Gurume TV series. And it stars Naoto Takenaka, one of the best comic actors of all time. Of course, I've gone through all versions of Shinya Shokudo. I've stopped trying to watch new US TV shows for about 5 years now; eventually they just seem too ... puerile?

I know what you mean. I don't watch much TV content from here except for Bob's Burgers and a couple of shows that are explicitly dumb fun. Cannonball and the Masked Singer, currently. Other than that, it's mostly older or foreign shows on streaming services or Youtube content.

The sad thing is that so many of those shows would never get off the ground today due to political correctness. Swami
Oshirokita 192 Posted September 11, 2020 (edited) My all-time favourite TV series are: The Sandbaggers (brilliant British spy drama) Forever Knight (filmed in Canada, vampire cop series, some people hated the finale but I loved it) Orphan Black (giddily entertaining) EDIT: The Americans (how could I forget that one, just amazing!) For current shows: The Umbrella Academy (Netflix) Edited September 11, 2020 by Oshirokita
orandashoho 720 Posted September 11, 2020 Political correctness is the death of subtle, intelligent comedy. When the masses start censoring the Idiot's Lantern, outrageous voices are silenced. In that increasingly toned down dumbed down environment, programs like My Music already disappeared together with the brilliance of Frank Muir and Dennis Norden. All gone now and hardly anyone remembers them now... oh well, I am just an old biddy that grew up with the Goon Show and Mornington Crescent. Auntie is doing her level best to cater for the YouTube generation. Has anyone here ever seen 'Fo a Fe'? That was a brilliant Welsh sitcom based on the differences between the North and the South.

I loved Muir and Norden; we got audio of "My Word" on the NPR station back in the day. Frank Muir wrote a book on social history that collected all the negative reviews/opinions about food, art, etc. I steal from that book all the time for lectures and speeches!

Yamanashi 3,911 Posted September 12, 2020 Re: Frank Muir He was responsible for the British TV shows "Till Death Do Us Part" and "Steptoe and Son", copied in the US as "All In the Family" and "Sanford and Son". He also hired two young comedy writers from Cambridge, Graham Chapman and John Cleese, and gave Terry Gilliam his first job in British TV.

I must say, watching old episodes of "Blackadder" after seeing "House" was quite a shock!

I was sad to hear that she died on Thursday.

Athenayama 1,081 Posted October 2, 2020 Oh, I also forgot to mention one very good mini-series (7 episodes) named "John Adams". Very instructive for non Americans who are not so familiar with American history. Maybe also instructive for some Americans who don't know all the details? I highly recommend it to all. Ok, if you only like "Fast and furious" style you can skip that ....
Katsunorifuji 65 Posted October 3, 2020 My favorite tv show in recent times has been Smallville. The later seasons weren’t the greatest but all in all the series did a great job of showing the life of Clark Kent from high school to becoming Superman. All time favorite honors would go to one of the Star Trek franchises. TNG and DS9 in particular I still enjoy watching from time to time. Other honorable mentions go to Stargate SG1, Highlander, and Shark Tank. Lately I’ve been watching NCIS LA and NO but we’ll see in a few years if they join my list of favorite shows or if they fade away.

Churaumi 745 Posted October 9, 2020 We've been catching up on Murder, She Wrote at the Churaumi household. I was a little too young in the '80s to appreciate it, even though my mom watched it every Sunday.
Yamanashi 3,911 Posted October 9, 2020 Don't know if I mentioned this, but starting in March I binge-watched various documentaries online ( I found I couldn't grade tests and reports in pdf format for very long w/o wanting to jump out a window). Time Team was a revelation! My wife trained as an archaeologist, and I'm a big history buff, so these were great. I must have watched 110 of them. (They did start to suck in the last couple of seasons). Lately, I've been watching Rick Beato's videos ("What makes this song so great", etc.) and a video series on languages and linguistics (NativLang). All of it free, free, free, and not a single snarky teen or moronic social commentary. My wife is smitten with Mudlarking videos.
