I guess Kagamio's only still around because degeiko is still off the table, and Ryusei needs someone to slam into?

Slight change on Kitanowaka: he didn't go to college, and instead turned pro after becoming high school yokozuna

I noticed that Shonanzakura has been promoted to Jk 9e from Jk 24e after his usual 0-7 last Basho. In fact he has been promoted after every Basho since July 2020. 0-7 or 0-8 in each of them. Anybody have any ideas why?

They need room at the bottom for maezumo grads, those who do one match a basho to avoid banzuke-gai and any other Jk guy who goes 0-7.

(Censored...)  To use an old Navy expression, some things in life are "lower than whale shit".  (Censored...)

And as they did not have any mae-zumo matches in March, none of the new lads had a chance to earn a higher spot, so they have to fill up the bottom ranks.

I just hope the new highest rank doesn't go to Shonanzakura's head. It would be a shame if it spoiled him.

Ikioi - kyujo at Makushita 41E

...which means he's likely to be down at around sandanme 20 in July. It doesn't look promising, does it?

I'd say that the most promising bit for Ikioi's short-term future is that ex-Bushuyama finally secured a myoseki of his own.

Of the LDCs still in contention, their Monday matches are:

ABI vs Terasawa (the stolen mawashi rabbit bones guy)

DEWANORYU vs Tochikodai (steadily progressing 22 year old from Kasugano beya)

I've already predicted ABI vs DEWANORYU in a 6-0 title decider so they will probably both lose tomorrow.

KANNO vs Oba (21 year old pusher-shover from Otake beya)

ISHIZAKI vs Sakurafuji (great shikona, otherwise unremarkable sandanme regular)

MURAYAMA vs ARAUMA (funny-looking little fellow vs hefty Mongolian: winner will be favourite for yusho)

I think the next LDC will be YOSHINO, who has been cleaning up in the basement.

Congratulations to Senho winning his first championship. Let's hear what noodle boy has to say (via Nikkan Sports, btw):

Hakuho's scout Senho wins his first Jonidan yusho, says he wishes "to be a rikishi like the Yokozuna"

Senho (18, Miyagino) who was ranked Jd35w, was scouted by Yokozuna Hakuho. He has won his first tournament in the first two divisions by defeated Jd84e Kotomaeda. He said, "At first, I thought I'd try to come forward with the migi-yotsu (right hand), but I couldn't because of the flow events. So I pushed forward and then took his mawashi."

He is the son of a Japanese father and a Mongolian mother. He was born in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, but because of his mother's work, had been living back and forth between Japan and Mongolia. He has been a fan of Hakuho since he was a child. "I used to cry when the yokozuna lost." he says.

He was introduced to Miyagino-beya by Akikei Nagai, an acquaintance of Hakuho and a member of the Kashiwa City Sumo Federation. "The Yokozuna usually says I'm still on the thin side so he tells me to put on weight."

His highest rank is Jd3w, and he has not been able to improve his ranking as much as he would have liked, but his victory in the first two divisions seems to be an opportunity for him. "I want to continue to practice properly and do my best because there are higher ranks. I want to become a rikishi like yokozuna." he said, expressing his enthusiasm for the future.

Shikoroyama pretty happy right now with Abi. Hopefully Abi keeps it up and doesn't muck about more.

We are not impressed. For him to make the list, well, let's first see how he does in Sandanme (after going as high as Jonidan 3 till now), where he will land next basho and will be eaten up. I see a 2-5 at best, unless he has undergone some miraculous metamorphosis. He needs to add weight quickly, or else he will be living in Jonidan his whole career. He's been around for a year and a half and has been going nowhere. We shall see.
