Beaten again by Atamifuji. Arauma lost to him in maezumo, beat him on day 1 in January, then lost to him in the play-off. It isn't exactly Goeido vs Tochiozan, but it's a start.

You hear a lot of "X has made sekitori and I want to catch him etcetc", but to my knowledge there are very few recent cases where both rikishi have an active rivalry and progress up the ranks at the same rate so they wind up fighting each other a lot pre-sekitori. Asanoyama and Yutakayama were rivals in university, came up together, and broke into makuuchi in the same basho. I keep rooting for Yutakayama to pull up his socks and get to the joi and stay there, so the two can resume their rivalry.

More typical may be the "I beat Hakuho" Hall of Fame, consisting of (by my count) 27 rikishi who: 1) defeated Hakuho in their only bout, and 2) never made it to the paid ranks. Members include our old friend Orora; and Hamamoto, who beat Hakuho in May 2001 and quit the next basho at a career high ranking of Jd115.

Ridley Scott made a film called The Duellists on this topic, featuring Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine. OK they were officers in the Napoleonic army rather than sumo wrestlers but it's the same principle.

Ichimawashi 573 Posted March 16, 2021 (edited) There was a story in one of the weird news sites on my tab list saying that a 68-year old South Korean woman, aiming to obtain a driver's license, has advanced past the first hurdle and will soon take the road test having finally passed the written exam, after 950 attempts. Shonanzakura's record crumbles by comparison. Edited March 16, 2021 by Ichimawashi

mt fuji 976 Posted March 19, 2021 There was a strange bout in Jonidan I caught today. Tsukubayama and Wakaseido faced off and touched down outside the ring around the same time. There was a mono-ii and the shimpan decided there should be a torinaoshi - I feel like they don't call a lot of torinaoshi in Jonidan? Anyways, the rikishi didn't really seem like they knew what to do, and when the two wrestlers decided to start the match, the gyoji and the attendant weren't ready for it. And it all ended with a sotogake! Just thought I'd share one bout that caught my attention. (starts around 1:55) 1
