Katooshu 3,179 Posted November 20, 2021 (edited) He is, a surprisingly good start in makushita for someone who 3-4'd in low sandamne despite a recent collegiate sumo background. Just a few months ago another sandamne MK and then a 1-3 start in the following basho at Sd40, looking every bit as poor as he was in college and as reported in training, but now wins in 12 of his last 14 and showing some power in lower-mid Ms - it's quite a turnaround. Let's see if he can keep this upward trajectory going and surpass youngest brother next basho. Edited November 20, 2021 by Katooshu

I am the Yokozuna 188 Posted November 24, 2021 I believe Jokuryu is 3-3 I do not know how many more chances Roga would waste to get himself promoted to Juryo. Would he ever make it there?

Katooshu 3,179 Posted November 25, 2021 (edited) Roga's progress has drastically slowed since reaching the Ms10 range and he's clearly lost his hot prospect status. But on the bright side he's still only 22 years old/3 year into ozumo and I think should get to juryo within the next year or 2. He mostly has the right tools, but to get past the highest makushita ranks needs to add physical strength and stop being so passive while looking for a grip; it makes it too easy for the hard chargers to push him around. When he loses, it's almost always someone outmanning rather than outmaneuvering him. Some decent collegiate rikishi recently joined Futagoyama (for his 3 years in the heya, low makushita Maikeru has mostly been the next best guy) and hopefully he can benefit from their presence. I have wondered if his training was lacking over the past few years given the heya's composition; he would've had tougher training partners at his high school. Now, someone I'm having more doubts about is Oshoryu. Two years on from his 24-0 run he's 25, MK'ing in mid makushita, and still hasn't had a winning record above the Ms14 rank he reached in his starting run. Oshoma and Oshomi have both overtaken Oshoryu in Naruto and I think carry more promise. Edited November 25, 2021 by Katooshu

I am the Yokozuna 188 Posted November 25, 2021 What is in for Jokoryu and Chiyootori to keep fighting? Both have more than 30 tournaments as sekitori, so presumably they should qualify for toshiyori status. Searching for a vacant kabu within the ichimon or just hoping for one last hurrah? I started a thread in Featured Rikishi asking that very question about Jokoryu. I haven't heard much about either of these guys, while others in similar position over the last few years were getting speculation about their post-intai futures.
