Eikokurai 3,437 Posted January 14, 2019 Tochinoshin ... he’s my outside pick for a surprise intai in the next year if he keeps struggling through tournaments. Nishikigi is looking strong these days though. I *knew* there was a reason to start watching him when he was a low maegashira.
robnplunder 978 Posted January 14, 2019 Ozekis are combined 1-5 so far, and that "1" was a very questionable win at that. I don't remember such poor start by the Ozekis to start a basho.

kuroimori 1,634 Posted January 14, 2019 Meanwhile, Hakuho shows some unbelievable Houdini-tawara stuff against Tochiozan. Wow!
Jabbamaru 169 Posted January 14, 2019 what? not even a monoi? thats a joke on Myogiryu. Tochi will drop soon at this pace. Yay Misspigi! Ozeki hunter. Mita and Sato are for real; wanpaku boys. Im not say another word about the dead man walking just hope this bout against Ichi was his last. wow...how Tochiozan manages to lost that fight? nhk dont showed the replay so i still dont get it...Nice day of ozumo! Understandably, Tochiozan looked very disappointed and Hak's wry smile said it all about what Hak thought about the bout. Ozekis are combined 1-5, and Yokos are just 3-3. Easily, it could have been 0-6 and 2-4. Some earth shaking going on.

Morty 1,517 Posted January 14, 2019 Hak just loves messing with Tochiozan. I vote that was deliberate. When he finally retires Hak should get a gig on Strictly Come Ballroom - he would walk it in with those twinkle toed moves. Two headbutts settle bouts today - Kagayaki nuts Sadanoumi as good as any I have seen late on a Friday night in Glasgow, and Yoshikaze knocks himself out a bit nutting Okinoumi in the chest. Mitakeumi on this basho, and Nishikigi looks the goods. 1
Akōgyokuseki 229 Posted January 14, 2019 Very pleased Mita looks as if his energy levels have picked right up! Hope he makes it back to sekiwake. Hokutofuji is also looking good, win or lose, the lad puts everything into it! Just hope he learns to pace himself, he often runs out of stamina by week 2. My Juryo bout of the day goes to Takekaze v Tobizaru...spirited effort by Tobi. He gets literally, pummeled..but bides his time to grab his first win. Well done lad! See it if you have the chance. Philioyamfugi 378 Posted January 14, 2019 Takakeishou looks right where he left off last time. With the big guys struggling, he might get the 11 wins and quality ones at that.
Andonishiki 171 Posted January 14, 2019 so here's my updated prediction for this basho after 2 days.... for the Top Ten Hakuho.... not 100% fit, but still better than most others... experience, ring sense, skill -> at least 12 wins, yusho contender Kakuryu... ok-ish shape - should stop pulling/going backwards... 9-10 wins Kise.... it's all over...zero wins, intai within this week Yasu...3-4 wins at best, kyujo after a few consecutive losses, kadoban Goeido...in 'normal' shape. will get 8 wins, most of them gifted Shin... injured, max 2 wins, kyujo in week one Mitakeumi... regained strength, 11 wins, restart Ozeki-run, Jun-yusho possible Takakeisho... best momentum at the moment, expecting a 7-0 and a 10-2, yusho contender, Ozeki in Nagoya or Aki ?! Ichinojo... solid sumo, got smarter. 9 wins, aiming for Sekiwake Onosho... going for the best of Maegashira performance, expecting 11-4-> M1 or K in Osaka Aminishiki, Takekaze to accompany (=escort ?) Kise on the path to Danpatsushiki..... tomorrow (day 3) might be the very last chance to see all three fighting in the ring crystal ball closed for today :)

Takakaze of even a year ago would have ended that match easily. He has looked very tired and going through the motions the last few basho. I really think his intai may come after this one.
ryafuji 824 Posted January 14, 2019 Myogiryu looked like a textbook shini-tai to me. That Hakuho bout was hilarious - reminded me of his escape against Takarafuji.

It’s early days, but the two sekiwake have both begun well so there might not be any room for Mita to move up, unless of course Takakeisho gets enough wins for an Ozeki promotion that vacates one slot.
