My biggest question at this point is: Will the Emperor make one last appearance at the Hatsubasho before he retires, or has the 2018 string of scandals made that impossible?

He'll be there. The question is what will Kisenosato's record be when he does and how that effects the news.

Any idea what day of the tournament  the Emperor is most likely to attend? It would be cool to catch a glimpse of him

Here’s some info from Wikipedia:

The Emperor of Japan is the head of the Imperial Family and the head of state of Japan. Under the 1947 constitution, he is defined as "the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people." Historically, he was also the highest authority of the Shinto religion. In Japanese, the Emperor is called Tennō (天皇), literally "heavenly sovereign". In English, the use of the term Mikado (帝 or 御門) for the Emperor was once common, but is now considered obsolete.[1]

Currently, the Emperor of Japan is the only head of state in the world with the English title of "Emperor". The Imperial House of Japan is the oldest continuing monarchical house in the world.[2] The historical origins of the Emperors lie in the late Kofun period of the 3rd–7th centuries AD, but according to the traditional account of the Kojiki(finished 712) and Nihon Shoki (finished 720), Japan was founded in 660 BC by Emperor Jimmu, who was said to be a direct descendantof the sun-goddess Amaterasu.[3][4] The current Emperor is Akihito. He acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne upon the death of his father, Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito), in 1989. The Japanese government announced in December 2017 that Akihito will abdicate on 30 April 2019.[5]

Even speaking as one of those odd fellows who insists on supporting Goeido, I can only be happy for Nishikigi. His growth has been so gradual that it's gone mostly unnoticed, but he's become a really good wrestler. I love it when hard work and persistence pay off. :-)

Keep going and teach people to take you seriously, Nishikigi!

Kisenosato looked "as usual" these days -sadly. OK tachiai, some all right technique, but no power. Tha tanks are empty :(. Hard to predict from one day, but also hard to believe the he can overpower Ichinojo tomorrow...

I think he lost them somewhere in Akiseyama....

(Phew, Kakuryu kept his wits about him in that match, nice domination of Tochiozan)

Can’t believe I forgot this was day 1 and went out for a leisurely dinner and drive instead of being glued to the action. Oh well, highlights it is.

well Takakeisho looked much better today than I expected after all that not so good news from training prior to the basho. Happy for him, looks like he may do well enough to get 11 wins.

I am not a Hakuho´s fan but I must admit he looked very impressive today and this may be his yusho to loose with all the ozekis opening with a loss.

Onosho, Aoiyama and Kaisei looked the best from maegashiras in my opinion.

Mitakeumi looked good today, he managed to do his style of sumo, he said in the interview. On the other hand it was not a good start for Kisenosato with a loss on the first day, this is the second loss in eight matches.

A bloody Ikioi.  Hope that isn't an eyebrow injury, as that will severely affect his tachiai in the next few days.

A convincing win by Nishikigi today. Hokutofuji also did well to keep Tochinoshin off his mawashi, but once again this revealed Tochinoshin's vulnerability if he can't get his preferred grip. Also, new year, new Ichinojo?  Either way, a straight ozeki annihilation today.

As for Kisenosato, it's only day 1and I don't want to undermine Mitakeumi's sumo today either, but I think we're inching ever closer to the inevitable.
