Rigel 62 Posted January 13, 2017 According to the sumo web site Wakaichiro, he of the glorious afro, won in day 6 and is now 2-1. Hopefully it was a competitive match.
robnplunder 978 Posted January 13, 2017 Ura suffered his first loss. It won't be the last in this basho. He will likely to go 9-6 or 10-5. If he wins more than 10, I'd be happy. Speaking of little guys, both Ishiura & Sato will go make-koshi. I hope they stay around in Makuuchi in the next basho. Kotoshogiku will be Ozeki no more. Terunofuji to go kadoban. Ah, He beat Noborifuji aka the scrawny one aka that kid from Doraemon (thats what I was calling him to remember his name to begin with) who I am keeping an eye on. Will be interested to see the bout. Rocks 1,810 Posted January 13, 2017 Gagamaru - Osunaarashi was funny. It was like Osunaarashi just went ahead and showed how he would have won if his knee was stronger and threw Gaga down.
Rocks 1,810 Posted January 13, 2017 Slowly I turned, inch by inch, step by step....Ichinojo is looking better, ever so slightly, each day,.
Rocks 1,810 Posted January 13, 2017 Takakeisho ends Sadanoumi's run. This is is MO. He looks like crap, wins one and then reels off 3 or more in a row.
Rocks 1,810 Posted January 13, 2017 Kisenosato is looking strong, and calm.
Rocks 1,810 Posted January 13, 2017 Wow, Kakuyru lost to a 0-5 Arawashi and Harumafuji, God bless him, got lucky against Tamawashi. At this rate they could both go kyujo and Kisenosato might not have to face either of them.

He's aging right in front of my eyes, fighting like a 40 year old rikishi. Despite the win today, I think Gaga will start the next basho in juryo. Well, the little guys (Ishiura, Takakeisho) mustered a few wins in the last two days. I still say they will both go make-koshi. Kakuryu is 3-3 after winning the last basho. Welcome back to earth, Kak.

pmac 34 Posted January 13, 2017 (edited) kise countdown: 6 down, 9 to go :D interresting times ahead, what happens when there is only one ozeki left in may? could happen, when kise gets the promotion, giku is out already and tera could be also history soon.....only goeido left in that scenario! and when it gets worse haruma and kak going intai, then there are only 3 y/o left! was that ever the case? YoungSumo 93 Posted January 13, 2017 After day 6 this is starting to look like a clear cut Hakuho vs Kisenosato basho. Even though Hakuho is the slight favorite I really hope Kise pulls this one out. While being by far the best and most consistent Ozeki among the current 4, he's the only one without a Yusho. He deserves it.
Morty 1,518 Posted January 13, 2017 Why the hell did Aioyama go for the belt against Kaisei? As soon as he grabbed it he looked clueless. He had the superior position and should have won that easily and yet didn't seem to know what to do and Kaisei, a superior belt guy, ended up winning it. Bizarre decision.

Either one of those guys drop out then Hak-Kise will happen on another day other than senshuraku, which I'd rather not see.
WAKATAKE 2,759 Posted January 13, 2017 Arawashi entered the record books today for slowest first kinboshi for a foreigner, taking 85 basho to do so. He is seventh place for oldest first kinboshi, and tied for seventh place for slowest first kinboshi as a rikishi in general. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1764872.html
Dwale 419 Posted January 13, 2017 22 hours ago, Rocks said: I'm not surprised. I figured he would. He was bound to win one sooner or later. Osunaarashi can't move around much with his injuries and with his height the busy little guys are going to give him the most trouble. Yeah, you're absolutely right about that. He doesn't fare well against that sort of thing even when healthy.
Dwale 419 Posted January 13, 2017 Alright, so we're back in familiar territory, namely Hakuho and Kisenosato leading alone. No one else in upper sanyaku is wrestling well enough to stay in it. If Hakuho is near 100% then this may well be another zensho-yusho for his collection. Favorite win of the day was Harumafuji for that weird performance art finish (I can't wait to see the still images).

YoungSumo 93 Posted January 13, 2017 So for the first time this basho I'm also trying to keep track a bit of guys in the lower divisions who are rising quickly and could impact the Sanyaku ranks soon once the retirement wave of the top guys starts. Starting with Oyanagi (23) who started his career as a Sandamne Tsukedashi winning the Sandamne Yusho in his first basho and the Makushita Yusho in his second basho. Had an impressive 11-4 record last basho at his Juryo debut, yet to have had a MK and is currently sitting at 3-3 at his highest rank so far (J6e). Next up Juryo newcomer Daiamami (24). He's a bit of an odd case. Starting off as Makushita Tsukedashi he's gone 4-3 in all 6 of his basho so far but seems to have found a second gear at Juryo, currently sitting at 5-1. In Makushita there are probably too many to cover but I'll try to pick out a few that look promising to me, don't get mad if I miss someone though. Ishibashi (22) is a Sandamne Tsukedashi who has won 5 or 6 bouts in all his basho, currently 3-0 at Ms7w. Possible Juryo debutant nex basho if he keeps this up. Tamaki (23) has a JK and JD Yusho and is steadily rising through the ranks. Currently 2-1 at Ms10w. Kizaki (23) won a Yusho at Jonidan and Sandamne and is currently 3-0 at Ms21e. Hatooka (22) is another case of someone who has won 5 or 6 bouts in every basho. Currently 2-1 at Ms50w. Asahiryu (21) the next Mongolian Yokozuna. Incredibly dominant in every basho. Coming off a Yusho-Doten at Sandamne last basho he's currently 3-0 at Ms51e. I'd also like to look at the guys who are still undefeated. They could become greats or hit a wall as soon as Sandamne but it's still worth to keep an eye on them. Nishikifuji (20) went 3-0 at Maezumo, 7-0 Y in Jonokuchi and currently 3-0 at Jd10e. Midorifuji (20) has exactly the same numbers except for the play-off loss at Jonokuchi. And finally the only Jk debutant who is still undefeated at 3-0 and at the young age of 18 could prove to be a rising star, Narutaki. Will be interesting to see how these guys perform the rest of this basho.
kuroimori 1,634 Posted January 13, 2017 The jo-i is really spicing things up at the top of the banzuke this basho. They already toppled 5 Yokozuna and twice as many Ozeki in the first 6 days - or 4 kinboshi and 6 ginboshi if we leave out the strong sanyaku rikishi. It would look a bit different if all the Ozeki and Yokozuna would be at full health of course, but it is an impressive showing nonetheless. But I expect that it will be getting tougher and tougher for the "kadoband" members to keep playing their favorite song "Back for good" with the next generation losing their interst to sing along. Dwale 419 Posted January 13, 2017 Chiyonokuni v. Sokokurai was an entertaining match. I always get distracted by how Chiyonokuni's jawline makes him look like he should be playing a gangster in a yakuza movie. Glad that the tachi-ai between Aoiyama and Kaisei didn't result in a singularity.
