Basho Talk - Hatsu Basho 2017 ** (SPOILERS)

Recommended Posts

Time stamp from Yubinhaad's post of Wakaichiro v Tatsunofuji video above:
https://youtu.be/b-Jpg6zBebY?list=PLj_5xaD5AfJCY6i8M70bTrjs5eCSn0CoT&t=24

Caught a quick glimpse at Wakaichiro smiling at a debut "difficulty" with his sagari.  Nishiiwa (Wakanosato) looks amused also.   I love catching these little incidental happenings when trying to stay composed and serious. :-D

Now the more pressing question is, how the heck will they get a chon-mage out of that wonderful top of his?? I would reeeeeally love to have him go sekitori just to see an Afroicho-mage.

Gallons and gallons and gallons of bintsuke. Or, since they use metric, nearly 4 times as many litres.

Or just give in to the unrulyness of the Afro!

One thing they can do is to just simply sculpt his hair with an electric clipper to make a chonmage, permanently. Then when he goes sekitori, have him grow more hair and re-sculpt to become oichomage. That would be a whole new skill set for a poor tokoyama to learn :-D

Wakaichiro lost his second match, so that video will be interesting when it comes out. We can't learn anything from easy wins, but his loss might show where he's at.

Harumafuji has never lost two straight bouts in the first three days before. As luck would have it, YDC Chairman Moriya was there yesterday. And the bombshell: "If he goes on like this, I think he should retire!!"said the Chairman in no uncertain terms and without mincing words. Harumafuji gave up his 31st kinboshi, tied for 8th most ever. The leader is Kitanoumi with 53.

It's not the absolute number of kinboshi that is telling, but the number relative to the number of matches won and the total number of matches -- I will leave it to the statisticians to figure out those rankings.

Sounds like there was an interesting series of events that occurred at the end of Kise-Shohozan

Mitakeumi!  I knew he can beat Kakuryu today.   He didn't disappoint me.

Ura's sumo style can be only described by a Beatles' song, "Helter Skelter."    What was that today?   How far can he bend backward without losing balance?

Mitakeumi and Shodai both won today. They're still young and have to deal with the old guard, but they are the future.

This basho is getting better and better. Without Hakuho's HNH yesterday i'm pretty sure Mitakeumi would have scored 3 kinboshi in a row. But even 2 and the way he got them, is remarkable. He emits an aura of confidence other youngsters lack.

Moriya is off his noggin. I hope that won't cut Harumafuji's career short. He's actually averaging more wins per basho after his 2-basho kyujo-yasumi in 2015 than what he averaged from 2014 Haru leading up to the yasumi.

Poor Okinoumi should be at home on a rubber cushion, not making his injury worse by having to squash it into a mawashi and then do sumo. Everytime he moves a leg he winces and the face he pulls when he has to squat just makes me squirm. The fact he is up there at all is amazing. Kudos and much respect for enduring it

And Hokutofuji sliding under the radar but looking extremely good. If he joins Mitakeumi and Shodai on the continual improvement train then the future looks bright for Japanese rikishi

May I call your attention to shin-deshi Chiyo Kazuki (千代 一貴),  who must have joined the wrong heya.

No offence McBugger but that's twice now already I've seen this joke on the forum. I hope he gets a real shikona soon otherwise it's going to get old very quickly....

Woo, Mitakeumi's on fire. Second kinboshi for him, and presumably on his way to a strong finish.

I was surprised Ura managed to salvage that match. Amazing balance there. He's like a spring.

Shohozan can be forgiven for trying that blitz; it would have worked on a lesser rikishi. I think the gyoji got into the ganja.

Ishiura- about dang time!

Yoshikaze v Endo is my favorite bout of the day (makuuchi, anyway) even though my boy lost. Exciting stuff, definitely worth another watch or two.

Things are warming up. I'm hoping for some surprises with the leader board in the days to come.

So was the monoii call for Kise-Shohozan a sashichigae or what?

The goyji got away with it with a mawashi-uchiwa: change of gumbai direction after pointing to the other side first - in this case he maybe just forgot which side Kise was on. (Un)fortunately Tomozuna was the head shimpan and didn't know how to explain the situation  - but he was nice this time and avoided the sashichigae.

I'm hoping that Harumafuji pulls it together and remains in the competition. I leave for Tokyo on Friday and will be bummed if I don't get to see him perform his dohyo iri. It's a thing of beauty.

And we all know what a hopeless yokozuna Kitanoumi was. Just shows how meaningless that particular stat is.

It always seems to me that Tomozuna can't construct a proper sentence in Japanese.
