Basho Talk - Nagoya Basho 2016 +++ Spoiler Alert! +++

Recommended Posts

A propos of this discussion, doesn't anyone think that "nokotta" the gyoji yell sounds more like "taragu" or something like that?

A looong time ago, my young children referred to the gyojis as "The Yadata Man".

Yeah, it only really sounds like "nokotta" from the 15 year old newbies who haven't learned gyoji-ese yet.

I found the announcing-in-triplicate useful when I was at the basho: the PA is less intelligible than one might hope, and figuring out where you're at in the lower divisions (on the Japanese torikumi) isn't trivial. With three cracks at it, I could usually figure out what was going on :)

Yes. When you're in the arena you don't get those useful Kanji helpfully suspended over the dohyo like you do on NHK.

Ura was totally robbed in broad daylight today. With the benefit of the NHK replays, you could clearly see Amakaze's heel was out. Nobody spotted it. The announcers were very, very carefully embarrassed. We'll see later.

Edit: Watching it again, maybe I'm wrong. I don't know anymore.

Aoiyama was slapping air so heavily that he fell down while Takanoiwa was watching from the side... another very awkward Aoiyama moment.

Musashikuni is having a very nice Makushita debut, currently posting a 5-1 score.

Yoshikaze aka. "Blue Eye" just took out the wind of Takayasu's sails. Can he regroup?

Whoa! Kise seemed not to have noticed that this Shodai guy is a quite strong up and comer and he almost had to pay for it.

Can't wait for their encounter next basho!

And then there were two... Terunofuji possibly saving his rank while doing his heya mate (and Kisenosato) a huge favor.

Or is Hakuho in on the O(tf)BSC?

And I was so proud we were free of this nonsense..

Who even called the matta? I missed what the announcers were saying on the broadcast.

Is Shikimori Inosuke drunk? These matta calls just seems like it's all gone to hell.

It looked as if the gyoji called but neither Hakuho nor Terunofuji heard at first, then Hakuho noticed the gyoji's gestures, then Terunofuji did. I was watching with no sound.

And both hands looked to have touched the dohyo from BOTH parties too (Eh?)

Funny thought... Inosuke is affiliated with Miyagino beya. I wonder if Hak will have a word.

I noticed before the Hakuho / Terunofuji contest the camera focused in on Hakuho's lower body. I did not have my headphones on so I did not here what the announcers said. I probably couldn't have understood what was said anyway. Does he have an injured toe? I know he stumbled in the Ikioi match and a closeup photo showed the toe jammed into the dohyo.

If his hand wasn't blocked, maybe Hakuho would have called it himself - again... ;-)

If I were Hakuho I would have walked straight backwards and taken the loss the second time around of my own free will. I don't know if Hakuho's heart was in the second time around anyway. He himself looked convinced by the first yorikiri loss to Terunofuji.

But yeah Terunofuji in healing beat Hakuho twice in a row, on a same day at that. Then you remember his last basho, what a crazy difference.

Takarafuji is already ready to claim his Kanto-sho and Shukun-Sho. There is no way in hell he ain't getting them. Yoshikaze and Takayasu may get some prizes as well All three of them have fought exceptionally this basho and I think it should be celebrated. Oh and give Shodai a Gino-Sho. That Utchari few days ago was flames.

No idea what Hakuho was doing today. It's almost like he was trying to lose. Very unlike Hak. Big win for Terunofuji.

Takarafuji probably lost his only chance at a title today. That golden path was ready for him and he flunked out.

What is wrong with Sato? I haven't watched any of his bouts lately, but the recent results are worrisome.

Maybe he is kind of satorated?

Ok, seriously, I saw some of his bouts and it seemed to me that he might have some sort of back pain which does not allow him to put pressure on it as he normally does, so he cannot counter when being pushed back and he also cannot initiate too much forward moving thrusting and pushing.
