WAKATAKE 2,759 Posted March 23, 2016 Looks like zensho yusho has happened 71 times in the 15 day era. Since that started 80 somewhat years ago, it happens less than one basho per year on average. 2 rikishi have accomplished the feat as maegashira, NO komusubi or sekiwake have ever been able to do it as stated above. In essence, it's a near impossible thing to do. There should be a zensho club formed somewhere for that. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&form1_wins=15&form1_m=on While I'm at it, in Juryo it's only happened five times. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&form1_wins=15&form1_j=on
Katooshu 3,483 Posted March 23, 2016 Speaking of not touching down, Osu may have been the worst culprit. Hakuho has looked like a man possessed since day 2 and Ithink he'll take this, though it's certainly not a foregone conclusion.
Katooshu 3,483 Posted March 23, 2016 That was a powerful tachi-ai from Hakuho today, you knew from the earliest moments whose match it was. Sorry for Kisenosato, but he's still in this thing and needs to keep his head. Ah, a henka from Terunofuji, that being similar to a henka from an elephant, and about as surprising. Well, he's hurt, so I guess I can't get too mad. How about Goeido? I know Harumafuji isn't at his best, but that's still Harumafuji in there, who no rikishi can afford to take lightly. I don't think I've ever cheered on a rikishi this warily before. The biggest surprise for me in all this is Kotoyuki. Now, you can tell me that he's a one-dimensional wrestler and I would find it hard to disagree. But sumo is results-based, so as long as he can keep putting up the numbers, he's golden. Oh, look, it's Osunaarashi having a too-easy time of juryo still: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNkrzcoo7ho Yeah, I don't think he's going back to juryo anytime soon, but rather en route to the upper maegashira ranks and another stab at sanyaku in...I'm gonna guess four tournaments, barring injury. Osu is looking beastly....he's been unlucky not to have already reached sanyaku.
ScottyJoyJrBebe 97 Posted March 23, 2016 Although this may be a **JINX** of epic porportions, I would like to predict (or actually, hopefully wish for) a THREE-WAY PLAYOFF between Kisenosato, Goeido, and Hakuho. That would be just perfect for all involved, as no matter who won, all three would benefit from the outcome and keep the excitement going all the way to the end. Here's to wishful Thinking.
Benevolance 2,534 Posted March 23, 2016 I bet Takarafuji is just happy he faced Hakuho on Day 1 before the beast awoke.

808morgan 814 Posted March 23, 2016 (edited) I found a guy making HD videos on Vimeo, in case the usual suspects are busy etc.. and we can't get sumo. No funny comments or anything, but in an emergency its another option. The thought of missing a day of sumo during a yusho is too much for me. https://vimeo.com/user13720392/videos Edited March 23, 2016 by 808morgan

Osu is looking beastly....he's been unlucky not to have already reached sanyaku. I think Osunaarashi in sanyaku is inevitable. The only question for me is, "How far can he go?" I can see him as komusubi or even sekiwake, but ozeki? Maybe someday, but he needs to tighten up his sumo before that can happen. I realize four tournaments is a conservative estimate, but considering he hasn't even finished this tournament yet, I didn't want to get too far ahead of where we are. bettega 433 Posted March 24, 2016 Kise owned again by Hakuho. Looooooooooooooooooooooooooot's of history (and some bad blood) in that bout. I bet 2 virtual dollars (and a "bala de banana" - like we say here) that Terunofuji will get his KK .. and a real chance for Kaisei Komosubi? (Eek...)
Katooshu 3,483 Posted March 24, 2016 (edited) That's now 10 different kimarite in 11 wins for Osu. Edited March 24, 2016 by Katooshu
dingo 1,477 Posted March 24, 2016 Oosunaarashi looks really strong this time around. Maybe it's also because of the quality of his Juryo opposition, but it also seems to me that he's bulked up more than before.

hamcornheinz 839 Posted March 24, 2016 I've noticed only the ones who have done university sumo will put their hands down and wait for their opponents. I guess its a signal of a different attitude towards competition?
Iginishiki2 8 Posted March 24, 2016 I vaguely recall the "hands down" being a rule set in stone in amateur sumo in general from past topics and conversations here and on SML, but I'd appreciate if someone more versed could confirm or deny that ;)

It's even more strict at wanpaku level, when all 4 fists have to be behind the white lines (they can't be touching)

mikawa 1,794 Posted March 24, 2016 Will Onosho and/or Kyokutaisei retain their ranks? That remains to be seen. Meanwhile down in Sandanme and Jonidan, the yusho's very likely to be going to Oyanagi and Masunoyama
mikawa 1,794 Posted March 24, 2016 Hakuho's in the zone at the moment, and has looked unbeatable in the past few days. Looks like Yusho #36 is coming up!

Katooshu 3,483 Posted March 24, 2016 (edited) Kinta drawing out Hak-Goeido had me thinking that the latter was going to take it, and then boom, nope. It's very close and there are still 3 days left, but Hak seems on fire. Edited March 24, 2016 by Katooshu
WAKATAKE 2,759 Posted March 24, 2016 I think Hak's had some things happen to motivate him. Plus he probably is irritated by some people here and there. Bloodying up some of his opponents and sending Izutsu to the hospital is a testament to that.
