Akinomaki 41,851 Posted March 10, 2016 (edited) Tomorrows NHK weekly news fukayomi (read deep into - but also "read too much into") has as main subject "Manin-onrei! Why is sumo popularity back?", also about the yusho of Kotoshogiku. The first 30min. are just news of the week. This is mainly a talk round, often lengthy but with simple explanations for everybody. Expert guests are especially ex-Wakanosato and sumo announcer Kariya (2 more experts and 2 unrelated guests). http://www2.nhk.or.jp/hensei/program/p.cgi?area=001&date=2016-02-06&ch=21&eid=28471&f=1788 http://www.nhk.or.jp/fukayomi/maru/2016/160206.html the whole program is now on YouTube, the sumo part starts after 30min. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Awdu9fYTBk0 Edited March 10, 2016 by Akinomaki

Akinomaki 41,851 Posted June 18, 2016 (edited) Nice program the other day about an amateur sumo women's European champion from Poland on a visit to Japan. Before and after the training with Japanese female champions at a university club, the making of the shimekomi (silk basho mawashi of a sekitori) (at 8:10) and in the end (at 43:55) a visit to Sadogatake-beya are the highlights of the 1h video. d_golem 213 Posted June 21, 2016 (edited) Finally had the chance to watch the entire video! Very very insightful and especially interesting because I can somewhat relate to her reactions and the feelings she had if I ever go to Japan on a sumo-related visit, being a foreigner in a new and strange place and all that. It was very cool to see the amateur sumo club atmosphere and the clear difference in level between amateurs in Japan and outside Japan. Is it just me or the ladies champion looks like Ura? All in all, a very enjoyable vid and thanks a bunch for bringing it up here! Edited June 21, 2016 by d_golem

It was very cool to see the amateur sumo club atmosphere and the clear difference in level between amateurs in Japan and outside Japan. Is it just me or the ladies champion looks like Ura? All in all, a very enjoyable vid and thanks a bunch for bringing it up here! I'll agree with you that Miku Yamanaka does bear a remote resemblance to Ura - before he bulked up .They also both have similar personalities. Off the dohyo they are very humble, sweet, polite and look like nama choco wouldn't melt in their mouths. On the dohyo they are both absolute demons. Here is a video I took of one of Miku's bouts at the last Sumo World Championships in Osaka. She didn't seem too phased by a bit of mage-nage. I have also seen some other ferocious eastern Europeans smash her in the face and give her a bloody nose however she still somehow manages to maintain her composure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXxj-65ZhSs
d_golem 213 Posted June 26, 2016 (edited) Too bad this is entirely in Japanese. This video seems to be about that other younger girl in Miku's sumo club. I wish I can understand a bit of what theyre saying. Edit: Just watched the whole thing. Is it right to assume that the documentary is about her not being able to beat her senpai Miku in a tournament for 2 straight years? Katooshu 3,485 Posted June 26, 2016 (edited) Obviously the video John posted doesn't offer an ideal view, but it seemed to me like the Polish woman should've been given the win the first time around. Nice technique to win the rematch though. Edited June 26, 2016 by Katooshu
